Kyle's ED/NL Ghia - Soon to be boosted w/ more 6 speed

Postby Kyle the ED4LTR » December 7th, 2009, 12:42 pm

Thread has been dead for a little while so I thought I would update it, not much has happened to the car for about a month, lost motivation for a bit after my handbrake cable snapped and this happened:
Image

I decided I wouldnt let it stop me, and with now having another car I can have some more fun with this and have finally decided to boost it, it is going to take me a while because I want to go down a different path with it and get a BA Turbo motor installed, I found a place that will wire it all up and have it running off the factory BA PCM, they did the blue EB that is on FordMods. I am getting a 6 Speed off Kev soon to put it and will probably have a manual conversion up for sale minus pedalbox soon ;).

I'm putting on a BA XR bonnet bulge put on so I can have the clearance for the motor, along with a Sprint kit I picked up off burnt turtle a little while ago. I want to do all of the driveline and brakes first, EL GT Brake conversion kit is looking good at this stage but I don't know what I want to do about a diff, i'm deciding between a KAAZ or a TrueTrack but don't know which one is best, all I know is that it will be copping 3.9 or 4.11 gears. Next thing to do is find a place that will make a tailshaft to suit the power and the reduced length from the 6 speed.

Well that's the latest :drinks2:

Cheers for the comment's guys, the conversion is gonna be roughly around the 8-10k mark, said it was going to be harder making it all work with the EL looms. But they told me that it is a drive in and out figure with all the pumps n that upgraded. I'll most likely end up going 3.7s which I have been told is an F6 Typhoon ratio. Plus all of the other parts like brakes n that I know it is going to be expensive but I reckon it will be worth it. But because it is a lot of money I won't have it all complete till about July next year. Helping with Shaun's car really sealed the deal on boosting the ED :P

Sounds like some pretty ambitious plans you have there Kyle, definitely unique that’s for sure! I am just thinking about the trouble it’s going to make for you though mate, coming from someone who tried to do a tenth of what you have listed and failed! In all honestly, if you were that keen on a boosted falcon, why not just sell both your cars, but an XR6-T and spend that extra $10k on that and have a far more reliable beast! Much less of a head-fvck that’s for damn sure!

Yeh that's true, but then again everyone is going out and buying BA turbo's, there common as now. The car that I mentioned on FordMods that had the same conversion done has been problem free that I know of :P. Putting a motor and driveline that is made for a 1700-1800kg car into a 1500kg car is going to make things interesting  . Plus I find turbo E series pretty cool :D. Being on P plates and all the car isn't going to be a daily driver and will be mainly coming out to drag events and cruises, so reliability doesn't have to be perfect.

put the t56 and turbo on the fairlane! won't be the same as every other BA XR6T and it won't drive like an e series!

Thanks for the comments everyone, I intend on making it happen but like I said it will be a while because it's gonna be pricey. Turbo'ing the fairlane would be cool but I don't really want to play with that car much. I was a bees dick away asking Dan about the conversion and then found it was sold :-( . This place claimed they will do a good job and they are gonna make sure all the cruise control works and there going to be fitting up a BA cluster. I am going to fit up the 6 Speed with the AU motor for a bit and see how that goes, before I get the BA motor installed I wanna get all the diff, brakes and other handling bits done first.

I'll be sure to keep this thread updated with what get's done

how is everyone doing the conversion? are they going to space the k-frame down so the motor fits under the bonnet? or are you going to add a bulge?

Cheers Mick, Yeh sort of, they got it done through a place called TJR motors in Selby, they also did the final wiring for revhead_88's EB. But being as it is not my priority car at the moment I will probably do all of the labor style stuff like fitting it all up and get them to do all the wiring n that. The AU motor will come out when I do the 6 Speed conversion, so while i'm at it I will probably get the enginebay resprayed and get it looking all pretty :P

Sweet as dude, im actually doing this myself early next year when I move house and actually have a garage to do it in lol, I hadnt planned on doing the 6 speed but perhaps I will if it works out good for you, how do they do it being a longer box? Its not like you can move the console backwards to compensate like you can with the eb/ed style consoles? If you want, I can give you a hand, will help me out too when I do it :P

Yeh that would be awesome mate, do the same for your car aswell, for the tailshaft I believe you use an AU one but I am going to get one made up. I have read through Rollin's build thread on how he did the 6 speed, just gotta work out the shifter length. All I do know is that I wanna do the 6 speed with AU motor first so I an at least wear the gearbox in. Then when it does come time to rip out the AU motor again all the driveline will be ready and then can start the BA motor install.

LOL our cars are pretty much in the same boat, just finish one conversion then not much later rip it all out again for another conversion! Last time I spoke to Kev he was saying he had a few 6 speed boxes lying around so should be good, probably better off getting a custom length tailshaft at least then you know its going to be exact, but yeah if ya want a hand hit me up :)

Yeh I had heaps of fun, my first 2 runs were crap but the last was the best. It's a shame to hear things didn't go well with your EB though. :-(

My decision on FB isn't final though, have just had a shit load of trouble finding a motor, nowhere seem to have one. If I can find a decent one or find a cheap wreck the original plan will still be going underway. Only price i have been given so far for a full install supplied and fitted has been around the 10-11k mark. Will see how I go
