what engine combo as replacement for 89 EA?????

Postby ripnea » January 30th, 2010, 11:22 pm

hey everyone new to the site, not long had the car being a very tired EA Fairmont Ghia 36oookms+ 3.9 multi 5 speed Manual which is having problems with the clutch at the moment to! i managed to eliminate the clutch cable after replacing it and reinforcing the firewall, :banghead: but still the clutch i think.
im unsure as to what to slip under the hood being a 6 or 8 and what would go with the 5 speed setup! and how much would i be roughly be looking at to get any of this done? only reason i brought the car was for a manual. but want more power!
open for any suggestions,

if you can do the workyourself and have an engine crane (or even hire one) i'd fit an EF/EL engine at the least.
you can get a long motor from a self serve wreckers for $150-$200
you wouldn't need to change manifolds or ecu if you didnt want to and can use your existing accesories to keep costs down also.

EF bottom end with ported EB head, valve springs, EL ECU & J3 chip, crane HI6 CDI & MSD coil, LC-1 wideband & SSI-4 logger

soon - .595" lift cam, GT4202, forged AU engine and built head, ems stinger 4424 ecu, powerglide with 5500 high stall etc - next, bellhousing

XH ute daily - DOHC BA XR6 engine, T5, AU3 ECU with TI J3 chip, ported BBM, 3" stainless intake - 12" sub, tub liner and hard lid - mass skids and epic tyre carrying capabilities :)

Hey misk one problem with that is it will run lean if you didn't change from a 3.9ltr ecu (though an xr6 fuel reg might be enough to make up the difference)

Whats the clutch doing wrong?

um just shuddering even when fully engaged for eg going from 1st-Reverse and then slam it in and grinds, some times its also hard to get in when going 2-3, when i get a chance ill take the inspection plate off and get my step dad to have a quick look at possily anything noticable.
as me and him are working atleast 12hr days 6days a week it gets hard, and him being a retired mechanic that really has no intrest in cars these days, which doesnt help
but hes good for advice and i belive hes tryna teach me to get to know my own car. no better way than to start working on particular things yourself eh
funily enough these early Es are so much different to a BA but also somewhat so simular in alot of ways after pulling my old BAs apart as an inquistive kid i am!
thanks for the advice very much appreciated

[quote="misk"] crane no probs (uncle) and would that go better than the 3.9 or would i havta do the ecu and manifold? if so how much better would it go once that was done? or no significant difference?
and how would i go with VICROADS? (MODPIGS) any hassles or just a little bit of paperwork?
cheers thanks for the advice

wouldnt even need to tell themits a different engine.
would just need to register the new engine number with the car.

Change from which manifold? With the facted they run a map sensor it will add fuel compared to the amount of vacuum in the manifold and not the accusal amount of air entering the motor so it will add it for a 3.9ltr not a 4ltr there by making it lean

wouldnt have thought that small a difference would cause any hassles with the ECU, thought it'd learn its way around it...

It would slowly but as soon as the battery got disconnected it would have to start again. A guy I know put a 4ltr in his 3.9lt cfi EA and if you boot it or load it up it just miss its head off. the mpi would learn better hence why I said an xr6 fuel reg would probably be enough

3949 vs 3984cc.... lawler your mate car has other issues.
EL 4L would probably be easier being factory distrubutor... but its much of a muchness once you swap your shit over anyway.

I was just working off the fact that they are 100cc difference and still while the difference is less than that it still going to be leaner but not by as much as I thought

ok well what about an Au or BA 6 or 6T conversion? thats different i know the K frame has to be moded for the barra sump! and i believe that the engine mounts are identical to EAs! just goes to show how far ford has really come eh!

Use the search function to find out that info.

BA conversion is a bit more complicated because of the wiring and the need to flash the ECU.

if your looking for a simple cheap replacement then EL (or EF if you cbf swapping dizzy) is the easiest way to go and will give you a better newer engine...

next would be AU, which isn't heaps harder, but is more work.

BA+ engine is going to end up costing thousands.
so all depends on how much your willing to spend
