My $450 LTD

Postby Mickus » June 14th, 2010, 4:49 pm

Sooo some of you may have seen my post in the wanted section seeking a set of wheels...well this is what I needed them for.

Quick Run down:

1997 DL LTD - Sparkling Burgandy - V8 - GAS - 231,000 kms

Ive been trolling ebay for the past few weeks seeking out a daily to replace the ED while I put the BA turbo motor in. I really wanted a V8 (not practical I know but I dont care) and either an ef/el or nf/nl.
Found a couple of ok examples but turned out to be heaps of s*** when I went out to have a look. There was another couple but went out of my price range in the auction.

I found this LTD on ebay for starting price of $800 with reserve not met, my curiosity piqued and I enquired as to how much the reserve was set at. I got a reply from the bloke saying he had it at $1000 to which I became very keen and asked for a contact number. Got from work and checked my emails, he had sent me another message offering the car for $500 without the wheels I enquired a little further as I thought this was too good to be true to which he offered it to me for $450 without the wheels...I pretty much jumped on it straight away and the auction was taken down off ebay. He was located in cranbourne too which was convenient to say the least.

I had to buy the wheels, get a battery for it and some fuel but it was well worth it. Got her home ok....but just about over heated on the way, not sure why as I checked the fluid levels before I left and it was fine, Im thinking maybe the fans arent cutting in or perhaps blocked radiator or dodgy thermostat?

Anyway heres some pics:

She wasnt in the best condition when I got her, had been sitting for last 3 months not doing anything. Gave her a quick wash today and the interior a clean, came up a lot better but she needs a good decent cut and polish and more cleaning. Few bits Ill need to replace - Passenger side taillight as its broken, rear garnish, center console lid, the seatbelts and front brakes plus a few random plastic bits I want to swap over. Thats all ive found so far but theres probably going to be more.

Plans are to get the Gas running properly, Reg and RWC (obviously) then full exhaust and maybe bigger wheels and dark tint, thats probably as far as Ill go with it though, being a daily and all.

Ill keep this updated as I go anyway.

Cheers

I could, but then Id be back to square one looking for another fairlane/fairmont to buy! lol.

Besides this has pretty much everything I want anyway, and it drives pretty well too...aside from the overheating issue.

if it over heated might be head gasket? Still holding water?

I had problem on the EF. Fands didnt work. Had to replace the yellow 30a fuse in the engine bay and all good!

i know my EL had half a tree worth of leaves and rubbish between the radiator and the condenser.
If it's been sitting i wouldn't be surprised if the thermostat is stuffed, does it have coolant in the engine or bore water? Bore water (rusty tap water) will seized the thermostat shut too.
I enjoy the symphony of mechanical harmony,

well if heater wasnt working either. it could have not been pumping water through (heater doesnt need thermostat open)

not hard to check everything on it.
just take radiator pipes off and flush the crap out of it both ways.
change the thermostat, flush as much as you can, stick hose into the heater core pipe. and make sure the heater tap opens and closes.
if that all fails still. it could have had the water pump changed with a cheap one which just dont work.(the cheap pumps dont have a plate on the blades. and they just dont pump water right)
