XG Turbo Van

Hey guys,

My name is Cags and im in the early stages of an XG Turbo conversion.
The car curruntly has a mild 4.0L with straight gas
Current specs include
- Gas Research conversion and GRA cam
- HM Headers
- 2 1/2 mandrel exhaust (no cat)
- T5 box
- 17" Territory stockies
- TE50 seats
- bit of a stereo install

New engine specs - so far

- EF - EL engine
- Snort Turbo manifold (second hand and modified)
- GT3582R
- Turbosmart 38mm Ultragate
-Turbosmart Boost Tee

Will be buying Spool rod and pistons next.
Waiting for head to come back from machine shop, getting 3 angle valve job and heavier springs

Thanks for letting me know about the rods, think i will buy the rod and piston combo deal, less stuffing around.
Its going to be a good solid streeter/work van, something to take a few wood ducks by surprise.

Bit of an update:
Spool rods turned up in the mail, thanks HYPOEB.
Oil feed line and water fittings turned up, got flanges and mandrel bends for the dump pipe.
Went to dummy fit the turbo to the manifold and the compressor housing hits number 3 runner, not happy, means more mods. :banghead:

Nah cant rotate, the back of the housing hits the front of the runner. Looked at putting another flange on there as a spacer but still hits, have to cut the collector and flange and move them forward about 10mm. The joys of buying 2nd hand stuff. While im at it im going to change the wastegate setup.

Have fixed the problem with the compressor housing hitting manifold, welded on another flange that is pointing slightly towards right side headlight. Also cut off the wastegate pipe as it hadnt been welded properly and was cracked in a hard to fix place, will be welding on 38mm pipe for the Ultragate i have.

Hey guys and gals, no updates for a while due to the fact im selling the van soon to make way for a work ute ( still turbo'd 6 )
If anyone is interested in buying the van shoot me a message and i will answer any questions, goes great, no rust but a couple of small dings here and there, lots of new bits replaced recently

Picked up a head with the lot (ebay bargain) and cam yesterday. Head has 3angle valve job,over sized inlet/exhaust, 120lb valve springs , port and polish.
Cam is a 1673-114. Lookng to get a W2A cooler from Frozenboost in the next couple of weeks.

Been a bit slack with the engine build of late, too busy fixing the shitty little things on the van.
Have had a water leak on the left side of the car in the footwell, turned out to be that the A-pillar was cracked all the way around.
So cleaned out all the old seam sealer and welded it up, re-sealed it and gave it a quick lick of paint. Also put on new door rubbers
and it seems to be fixed. Next on the list was the lack of heater, changed heater tap and checked to see if was opening and closing
and didnt fix it, flushed heater core and didnt fix. Now have found that it has a vacuum leak coming from behind the dash switches,
hopefully its as simple as replacing the hot/cold switch, have been told the diaphram in the switch shits itself over time.

Now back to the engine.

Have had the block prepped for the build
- crack tested and chemically cleaned
- bored 30 thou and decked
- cleaned up the factory casting dags
- new stainless welsh plugs
- painted ready for assembly

Had the Spool rods prepped
- little ends honed
- oil squirter drilled into big ends

Have bought new gaskets, bearings, pistons, timing chain kit, lifters and other shits n bits ready to assemble.

Sending everything off to be balanced once i get a clutch, then time to GIDDY UP

Small update, not much happening on the engine front at the moment. Thought it would be a good idea to make the car handle before i gave it some balls, have had a new Nolathane front end bush kit delivered with TRW ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends and upper and lower ball joints. Tomorrow should get some Kings Super Lows and shocks to suit and will be ordering a Clutch Industries cussion button clutch kit. Then maybe start on the fun stuff :yahoo:

Since last post the only thing that i have done is wash it so i could see out the windscreen (sat undriven for atleast 4 weeks). Have all the suspension bits and clutch, just havent had time to do any work on it.
Things are about to change, going to give this aspirated thing a go before i put some wind in it. Will bolt the engine together to see what sort of power i can get out of it on LPG and have a bit of fun and early next year pull the engine out and check the internals, open up the ring gaps a bit and put a nice thick head gasket on and assemble ready for the turbo greatness. Will post progress pics when i start sometime next week

Not a great deal of progress happening at the moment due to work commitments and buying a car for the missus.
Picked up a low km, bog stock E-gas AU3 for a pretty good price. All that it needed for rego and roady was brakes machining, rear shocks and a rack boot.
Since buying it i have cleaned it up a bit and done the usual standard mods,
- 2 1/2 cat back mandrel exhaust
- K+N panel filter
- 18" wheels with new rubber
- lowered all round with Monroe GT Sports and Kings super lows (rear is a bit to low, dropped 85mm)
All that is left to do is try some lows in the back to lift it a bit, tint the windows and give it a good polish.
Here are a couple of pics from this weekends trip to Sale where it done 730kms and used 76 litres of gas, awesome for a family cruiser

A few more shits and bits have turned up over Xmas, scored some head studs from ebay for a fairly reasonable price and picked up a LOKKA centre aswell. Also got 6 metres of double insulated heavy duty cable for a baterry relocation.

Loving the build. Going to try the same thing with my xg pano when I get the funds. Just a quick question do you have 3.5" blocks in the back? Or a buttload of tools? Lol.

Nah only 2 inch blocks, probably looks lower because of the angle the car is on and maybe a couple of bags of tile adhesive in the back.
Hoping to get some time over the weekend to rebuild the front end and start on the EL ECU conversion.

Nothing happening with this at the moment, just sourcing parts and doing a bit of research. Was meant to be getting an EL ECU from a bloke on AFF but got shafted :banghead:

. He has apparently posted it twice but i havent seen it, definately a scammer as since i have pulled him up about it he hasnt logged on.
Anyway just got a call from Rod Hadfield about his new 2" dropped stub axles and caliper brackets to suit AU2 calipers. They were featured in this months Street Machine mag. From what he was saying the car featured in the article was their test pig and the bloke was massively happy with the handling and braking, so will be going to over and picking up the bits for the conversion one night after work fairly soon.
Hopefully get a break from work soon so i can pull the van off the road for a few days to rebuild the front end and do a few other shits n bits.

Finally made a start on this thing, started with a dirty old front end

Pulled it all out

And some of the front to be put back in

Had to do a small mod to the new dropped stub axles, the rotors were hitting the stubs and needed a little grinding to spin freely

And all back together, just need to get some braided brake hoses modified to suit

During the week i will get the brake hoses done and rebuild the rear calipers so that i can bleed the brakes up and go and get a wheel alignment so that i can see if it has all been worth it

Pulled the rear calipers off tonight to rebuild them, one was fine and the other was shagged. Piston was too far rusted to rebuild so have to wait until tomorrow or the next day to get another and finish the job.
