oneredED got a new daily driver... a BMW :)

Postby oneredED » December 23rd, 2007, 6:43 pm

Well, after not driving for a while due to onefuckedED, I decided to splurge a little and get myself a nice respectable daily driver to get around in... so I went and bought a '97 BMW 528i. Despite being only a 2.8L inline 6, it's got 142kw, should do around 15.6 on the quarter, the quoted top speed is 236km/h, and it's got a 5 speed 'tiptronic' auto as standard. It's got leather, a sunroof, 6 airbags etc etc.
It's got 19x9" M5 copies with 245's all round, an E46 M3 front bar, and some different head/tail lights as the only modifications.

Now, it's definitely going to stay standard for at least 12 months (at this stage) even though it needs lowering pretty bad. The bottom ends are good for around 650rwhp, and the heads flow better than a 2JZ, so I'd be silly not to put a GT35R or a GT35/40 on there with some decent management down the track, but at the moment I'll just enjoy it in all it's underpowered glory :D

Although, complete turbo kit's bolt-on from the US are around 900AUD delivered, with a crappy T3 turbo (which is easily swapped to a 35/40)....

Anyways, here's two pics for the sake of having pics.

LOL, I get alot of "I wonder if that's daddy's" or "haha, that mechanic is hooning in a customers car" type looks from most people.

As for the build quality... ford and holden honestly just don't come close, especially in the interior and the layout/serviceability of the engine bay.

You should do what so many seem to and put a massive set of chromies on.

Bit of lowering it would be perfect - visually anyway. :)

I thought you weren't revealing the price!! It was really 45k+.

Jared picked me up today... And what can I say? I've never been in such a quiet car! It feels so tight and solid. BA-BF, VZ-VE just don't even compare even if they are 5-10+ years newer. Cemented my love for Bimmers even further.

It lacks a bit under 3,000rpm but it's so smooth and it pulls up quicccck.

Just can't wait for my 540i to arrive 8-)

Took it for a spin at the errr racetrack yesterday... at 190+ it handles far beyond my own limits for the time being, where-as the ED I found them pretty easily. The brakes are simply amazing, I couldn't believe how well they pulled up whenever I saw a "safety car" come onto the track. The lack of body roll and "slop" at high speeds is really confidence inspiring. It slides well too (when wet obviously), very very stable and controllable, not nearly as heavy as I thought it would feel.

It really needs another 250rwkw's though, I'm sure the rest of the package is up to it... it's just not fast enough!

That looks great! How many km's has she racked up?

Always thought of getting one of them, but a bit worried about parts costing big $$$ once they get past 150-200,000km and start needing some of the bigger items changed.

awesome daily. spewin to be the person who bought it from the showroom. losing money on cars FTL... but on a 4L its worth it.

just had a great idea, what about fitting a 4L in between the strut towers... :D

fan of beemers am i

seen a 90's 318i in Sydney at an exahust shop, he had thrown a LS1 and matching auto into it (modded the BWM shifter to fit) was the best sleeper.

My dad's workmate has a late 80's 528i, white with RB26. Goes REAL good, been in Zoom once.

Nice car Jared! Never thought I'd see the day that you drove something classy ya bogan! We'll have to catch up for beers soon mate and you can take me for a spin!

It will look great when its lowered, one thing I like about these BM's is that the height of the rear guard in relation to the bottom of the side skirts & bumpers means that you don't have to scrape its belly on the road to drop the rear wheel arch over the top of the wheel like you did on the ED. A mate from work has a similar BM to yours (couple of models older tho so the square-er shape) which is lowered to within legal height and the level of the rear wheel inside the guard looks like your ED would without springs, only the ground clearance is far better to achieve the look, and it looks MINT!

Even Katelyn agrees its a "nice car" so you'll have to come around and show it to her too ;)
Catch up soon mate,
Russ.

It's too slow. It needs a turbo, a massive one. GT47-88 maybe? Or maybe just a little 35R? Either way it needs serious power, the rest of the package is well up to it (although M5 brakes are on the cards at some point).

Thanks for the nice comments guys :) If theres anyone feeling remotely envious, take solace in the fact that it's almost slower than a Kia Preggio to 100km/h... It's SLOW!

The car now has a potential $5500 problem  I'm undecided as to which way I'll go, it might be time for a T56 or V160 box... or a whole VUII SS 6-speed in black. A silver E39 540 is very tempting too, but given that their auto's are almost identical to this cars (and the fact they never came out manual here) I don't think I can bring myself to take the risk. Fuckin' Bavarian kents.
