Question about exhaust

Postby poopynugetteer » May 10th, 2011, 9:53 pm

Hey I just have a couple of questions I was wondering if it's legal to cut out the rear muffler in a car. I have a 2 and a half sports exhaust on an EA and also does a 3 inch dump make it sound any better?

Well if you have an aftermarket exhaust chances are its already above legal noise limits and thats the only thing that would be illegal about removing it. Its not like a catalytic converter which you MUST have.

As for the tip in my opinion no it wont change it, ive been through at least 5 tips on my car and they dont affect the note at all.

It's not that loud though, I've got extractors and a hi flow cat.
Does a hotdog muffler make it sound better or would it just be better to have nothing there?

depends how loud you want it. Also not that loud is still probably over the legal noise limit. 95dB is pretty low.

Id say go ahead and remove it, dont put a resonator (hot dog) in there yet. That way if you like it you didnt waste money on a res. Then later down the track you can add in a res if you get sick of it.

no worries. You should do an intro thread for yourself too. Goto into section and post there showing your car.

Also next time post this in '6 cyl tech' rather than 'general discussion' ;)

Also my mate just told me that it's better to get a good muffler because it will sound better is this true?

Stick with redback mufflers and you should be fine. They are australian made, cheap and are of good quality. But with any other brand i doubt you could hear the difference except for the over all volume of the exhaust.

Yeah but I mean like would it sound better if I had a good muffler there or no muffler at all in the back but still having the front muffler?
Like just cutting out the back one and having a straight pipe or having a hotdog or having a redback muffler?

The 'note' of a vehicle is predominantly determined by the motor, the exhaust plays a minor part in the quality. So far as I can tell this is the only reason why one would buy a ba/bf XR8 over an XR6T.

In my experience with many many exhausts you can really only affect the volume and flow with different mufflers. A louder exhaust will be more gutsy and crackly but it will also drone its ass off and piss you off very quickly.

Companies like redback and lukey have done the hard work for you. Their systems are cheap and generally sound pretty good. Dont do what I did and try heaps of combos because the money can be much better spent in other areas.

All in all for the best exhaust out of the i6, you want a big cam and high compression.
