Just swapped over alternators for another new one. Slapped it in, aaaaaand.....no change! :P Still the same noise. I tried running the car with the alternator in place and the belt on, but with the plug off the alternator, and the noise goes away. Bloke said it is an electrical issue and I need an auto sparky to have a look. So I wouldn't think the issue is all that major now, just noise. I'll ring around a few sparkies next week and see if someone can check it out.

This.

Sounded like a supercharger seems like bearing noise, bearing noise shouldn't change when it's unplugged wouldn't think? Unless it's a load thing.

As I've mentioned, this only started happening after changing the alternator. Also has a brand new Excide X56D battery. No other modifications to the car, electrical or otherwise. That was with no lights on, and the radio off. The sound goes away if I unplug the alternator, removing the load.

Belt isn't slipping is it? if it only happens when you plug the alternator in and the alternator actually loads up causing the belt to slip.

There's only two things moving in an alternator is the brushes on the commutator or the bearing if it makes the same noise with two diferent brand new alternators the it's probably not the alternator

I just so happen to keep another spare belt in the boot, just in case. I just swapped the belts out, and it made no difference. Noise still exists. Unless my tensioner pulley is stuffed and night holding the belts quite tight enough?

Look at the tensioner with the belt on, there is an arrow and a little slot if they are close to each other then the belt is past it's service limit ie. Stretched.
is the spare belt brand new?

Noise is still there. The latest exciting development in the electrical saga is a burnt thermo fan! Of course this had to happened when I was lined up to pre-stage at Heathcote on Sunday and make me look like a right tool! :P So I have picked up another set of fans from Josh tonight, and will be taking this into my local auto elec near work tomorrow for them to look at. Hopefully they come up with something.

Anyway, because I have had enough of this thing, I have stripped my stereo out of it in case someone actually buys the car. Pulled back the carpet in the passenger foot well to retrieve some cables, and discovered the below! Just sitting there, minding its own business, not plugged into anything! The loom is still there spliced into the factory ecu. I plugged it in and took the car for a spin, made jack shit of a difference. Might try again without the lpg restriction on the tb for shits one day if I'm really bored! :P

So I just got a report back from the auto elec, and unfortunately they cannot find any issue with the car. They said they ran it all morning, with various electrical loads, and it all appears to be functioning as normal. When I asked about the noise, he said "shitty aftermarker alternators can do that" so I just have to put up with it. I got the working thermofans installed at least, so it shouldn't over heat anymore! :P

Meh, if these blokes said its fine, then I'm sure it is. I have a warranty on the alternator, and now a report saying the car is fine, so if it packs up again I'll just get a new one. Hopefully I can sell the thing before something else happens anyway!

I've had a quick look over it, it's 100% coming from the alternator but has to be from the regulator not bearings.
Thermofans was just the car putting up a fight against thrashing.

Sorry guys, no list of what the auto elec checked exactly, but other than the noise it was given a clean bill of health. It's been completely fine since getting it back with working fans in place, so there is nothing I can do but keep an eye on it all.

lol Ev.

I'll give it a week before you're complaining about the price of petrol vs LPG, and that you miss driving a manual V8, and that your T-cell count is very, very low.

Did you buy this for more than you sold the XR8 for?

LOL! That is exactly what I was going for!

You know what Dave, after the last couple (well, three actually) cars I have had, I am actually loving how uneventful this thing is! Yes, I do find my left leg reaching for a pedal that isn't there, but I'm much happier with this thing in traffic I can tell you! As for the running costs, so far this thing has done 330kms to HALF a tank of petrol. So I'd say if this is any indication it will cost me just as much as the XR8 did on gas. Even if it is more expensive to run, I'm happy to take it for less stress factor! It's smooth, comfy, I got my tunes (stereo already installed!) and that's it!

As for how I made out on the purchase/sale? After having to fix a bunch of shit on the XR8 to get a rwc, I basically broke even. It was just about a straight swap money wise, which is about the best I was going to do. The SR came supplied with a rwc and 12 months (well, minus 10 days) rego.

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

Thanks Dylan, but that was confirmed a long time ago!

Sorry Dan, as funny as that would be, buying a manual conversion that's worth more than the car itself is beyond even me! I'm sure I will eventually get bored with it at some point, but if/when that does happen I will replace it with something else worth modifying.

Edit: So I slapped a new battery in this thing today, and left the power disconnected for a few hours to do an ecu reset or whatever it does. Just took it out for a drive to make sure it runs ok, and was pleasantly surprised. I hadn't really bothered pushing it till just now, but thing thing goes very well for a stock 6! I am convinced it feels noticeably quicker than the XR8! Although that's probably more a comment on how slow that car was. :P Anyway, it made me happy as it seems to have affirmed I may have picked up a looked after car. Only time will tell for sure.

It's funny coming back to this and seeing at what point in the cycle it is.

Someone should do a flow chart.
