NF Fairlane - Given up!

Hey guys,

I thought i'd throw up a few pics to show how much has happened with the NF...

Bought as a relativly clean stocker with only a dodgy 2.5" cat back system, it was slow, ugly, didn't handle and sounds crap.

After many months of procrastination I finally spent a bit of money on it... Its still slow and sounds crap, but now its less ugly and handles very well

First up was the addition of 17X8" Advanti Fluids with 235 Firestones.

Then came an EF grille which was modded to resemble an FBT Grille.

A little while later I attacked the suspension with some king superlows in the front and ultralows in the rear. Some Koni red adjustables and whiteline sway bar also went in with custom rear bump stops.
Somewhere along the line I bought some reco'd headlights of Sundeep and filled them with Diamond Vision globes, which made a huge difference to the lights.

Since then I have also removed the standard badges and replaced with BA Ghia items

That pretty much brings the car to today... Hasn't been an easy ride due to blowing things up.
I killed the gearbox on the Great Ocean Road which was replaced with a low k box from an EL XR8.

Future plans are not clear at the moment, as my fience and myself are expecting our first child in July, so spending money on the car will be a low priority.

I could get a trickflow top end kit and a new bottem end for that money... But the missus would kill me, I reckon I'll choose life and leave the baby bonus for buying baby stuff!

One day it'll get some coin spent on it... at the moment it'll live in the garage whilst I drive a beaten up ED around...

Thats cool Kester, I don't really mind the Advanti's but in saying that I'm not really attached to them. They just came along cheap enough and weren't a style I had seen much before... One day i'd love for it to be on EBGT wheels, or perhaps a much nicer styled set of 18's...

And yeah, i've been meaning to tint the windows since I bought the damn thing!

Looks mint, although the camber of the road doesn't help the "low" look, you need a flat surface, or a raised part where your rear tyre is to make it look lower than it actually is, what you've photographed is the opposite of that.

Fixed a few problems under the bonnet yesterday.

The Harmonic balencer had slipped 42 degrees, so it needed to be replaced. Whilst doing this we found that the water pump was cactus so that was also done. The heater valve was also leaking onto the exhaust manifold so that was replaced also.

Some moron mechanic had removed the balencer in the past to 'fix' a leaking timing case. It was covered in sealastic :roll:

They had reused the same balencer seal and as a result it was mangled... No wonder it failed...

The Bearing on the waterpump shaft has pretty much seized up, and there were signs of cavitation on the vanes.

The heater valve had gone brittle with age and three of the four pipes had collapsed inside the hoses.

No wonder it was leaking

New balencer, water pump, serp belt and lower radiatior hoses are on, and it runs smoother than it ever has.

Feels like it has a lot more punch to it, esspecially above 3000rpm!

Just booked the NF in for window tinting for friday morning.

Going to Premier Tint in Coburg, and getting their "Black Night" package at 20% on all windows. Seems pretty good for $350.00

No doubt i'll have new pics on to post on monday

I've been meaning to do this since I bought the car!

Tint has been on for a week now, but I've been to lazy to take photos...
I don't know why I didn't do this earlier, it makes the car so much nicer to drive in!

I couldn't really be bothered getting proper pics, so I just snapped a few pics when the missus nicked the car to go see her mum.

And after a random cruise to go get some dinner ended up with us being in Bendigo, I grabbed this one too.

I keep telling myself that I can't spend any more money on my NF, once again have been lying to myself...

Sitting under my desk at the moment is a new long term project... A Eaton M112 supercharger and TB assembly that I picked up over the weekend from SVT8.
I'm going to measure it up later tonight and create a 3d model of it in Autodesk Inventor.
I'll be designing an adaptor to fit the M112 onto a modified explorer lower manifold, made from laser cut aluminum plate which i'll have Tig welded together.

I will be keeping the standard serp belt, but machining up a new twin belt harmonic balencer pully and designing a new tensioning system for the secondary 8 rib supercharger belt.

The M112 will need a drive extension, which I'm pretty sure C.A.P.A. sell off the shelf.

The plans at the moment, is to collect everything I need over the next few years, including an AU windsor, as they will already have the explorer manifold and the coil pack ignition.

Fun times ahead!

I've made a little bit of progress.

I've measured up and modeled the important parts of the Eaton M112. Important being the mounting face, intake flange and pulley size/location...
I CBF'd doing the pulley snout, as it isn't exactly critical to the design of the adaptor. The body of the M112 is just a representation, so it looks a little crappy.

Next up is to get the intake manifold gasket that sits between the lower and upper from an explorer manifold and measure it up.

Once I've done that, and determined a datum point from the serp belt, I can start designing the adaptor.

Man love the lane!! The pic infront of the church looking building looks awesome. The reflection on the roof/ bonnet is brilliant. And GL with the supercharger idea! hope it all pans out according to plan

It sucks only being able to work on this thing after hours, its taking too long!

I bought a manifold gasket to measure up and use as a template.

Now some work can begin on the actual adaptor itself. I'll be designing it out of 6mm thick 6061 Aluminum alloy sheet for the sides, and 8mm thick flanges top and bottom. I'll have 8 bell mouths turned up and welded to the top of the bottom flange.
I'm also looking into running a water to air heat exchanger directly underneath the M112.

The idea is to have a reservoir located in the boot, and pump water from that to a heat exchanger in the front bar, through the supercharger cooler and back to the reservoir.

Yeah for sure Johnny, but looking at what he mentioned earlier it sounds like he is going coilpack, so AU/Explorer cam angle sensor is alot smaller.
Still something to take into account though.
I reckon bonnet clearance is gonna be a bigger issue!

If you need 8 rib idler/tensioner pulleys look in the Dayco catalogue for F350 7.5l powerstroke, they get 8 rib serp belt.
I got the replacement idler and tensioner pulley to use on mine, and the tensioner pulley will fit a BA 6cyl tensioner with barely any work.

Yeah, the plan is to buy a complete AU engine, that way I won't have to deal with E7 & HO crapness.
The factory coil packs will more than likely be replaced with MSD coils anyway, which i'll proberly mount behind the M112 for a cleaner look.

The bonnet is definatly going to be an issue, But I have no problems cutting it up... Eventually I'd like to have a cowl induction scoop similar to the first gen Camaros... They are all the rage on Fox body Mustangs, and look pretty tough. BA Bulge would proberly do the trick, but they have been done to death.

I'll definatly look into the F350 Pulley, and BA Tensioner... Much better than designing a system myself!

twin t/b's out of the bonnet would look fu**ing tuff on a charged lane. It might'en be a bad option either. It would save on some costs to modifying air intake and bonnet. Would be running mafless too

where on the same train of thought......was looking at the camaro style, but the ridge down the middle of it looks out of place with the lines of the car

so i've got a "a9x" one which i'm going to graft into the bonnet with a cutout to suit so it will be functional

just doing the rounds to find out who's good at this type of work.

Cheers Ash, its a little rough up close but its much better than the ugly plastic NF grille!
I'd still love a proper FBT one like yours though

I could always replace the F150 TB assembly with an Enderle bug catcher sitting directly on top of the M112, and have it poking through the bonnet a little bit sitting underneath a '70 Mustang Boss 429 scoop

Wouldn't suit the style of the car though

It'll all be running mafless anyway, as it'll have full megasquirt using a MAP sensor to determine the airflow.

I'm after some opinions here, regarding the airflow dynamics of pressurized air and bell mouths/runners.

I've come up with the two following designs, first being a flange plate with 8 bell mouths welded to it. The bellmouths have a small 3mm radius on the top, as that is all that could fit before the bell mouths started touching each other.

The second is the flange plate with the runner holes having a 5mm radius on each one.
My theory is that since the explorer manifold lower half is being retained, there is no need for a bell mouth to increase the runner length... The advantage to this method is a lower profile supercharger adaptor, and a larger radius on the hole.

What do you think?

I've been slack and haven't really touched on this for a while...

I had a huge stack of work to do this morning, so I did this instead

Its all 8mm thick 6061 Alloy Sheet... The Sandwich plate in between the Eaton and the adaptor will have the water to air intercooler core welded to the underside of it so it can be lifted out seperatly... It also means it can be retrofitted at a later date... meaning I can get it going without an intercooler whilst I sort the core and other crap out.
