Pulley question

Postby Amon » June 24th, 2008, 9:20 pm

Hey guys this might sound like a wierd question but is there anyway i can get a pulley modified like so its smaller?

At idle my alternator wont charge with my headlights and stereo on.

If my alternator is spinning at a faster rate at idle it should charge...

If its a fair hassle/cost or cant be done, ill try a 3 farad capacitor

You should be able to get a bigger pulley to suit from an ag supply's shop

I wana keep bosch alt on there if i can... parts are easier to get, more reliable and cheaper

but like i said if it cant be done ill go that path or the capacitor...

1 farad doesnt cut it atm

Sounds like something is broken. Why do you think your alternator isnt charging?

Your alternator should still charge a little bit. Does it drain your battery with the subs and headlights on?

well im judging by my voltmeter cos it drops down to battery voltage at idle then goes back up with the revs...

when im driving if i have the stereo cranking the interior lights dimmer with the subs so i turn the bass down at night

The alternator and reg are only half a year old.... i replaced the 70A ford unit for the 85A bosch and it charges fine in any other case...

oh and for your question i think its cos at low revs the current draw from my amp and headlights are too much for the alternator at low revs?

so in theory if the gearing is different (smaller pulley) the alternator will spin faster at idle and therefore ont struggle with load...

With only the headlights on at idle do your volts drop?

What do you mean by drops down to battery voltage? Does your battery ever go flat?

Battery voltage is roughly 12.5 depending on how much charge its got so it drops down to that on the meter, thats when i know the alternator isnt charging. Voltmeter reading will go up back to 13.5-14v when i start driving again...

battery doesnt go flat no

do u want to move this thread to electrical/entertainment dan?

I'm gonna stick my neck out and say your battery may be on the way out.
12.5 is a bit low as an average IMO. Mine sits just below 14 all the time (even at idle) and never dims any lights at all with AC, stereo and high beams all on.
My guess is the battery is dying. Or as wave_man said, the water levels may be low. Make sure you boil the water and let it cool before you fill it up though ;)

Is your water pump / alternator belt alright? Most likely the battery, but might possibly be the belt.

subs only draw large amounts of power for short times unless your at auto salon at spl competion

it should be pretty fine

my volt meter drops a shit load when my 3 subbies beat and head lights dim and interior light goes off when im idling and when im at driving revs but its not going to stall or anything,

the cars electical curent is provied by the alternator when the engine is running any way? (correct me if im wrong)
