Short/Quickshifter installation directions

These may vary slightly for each make/model of short throw shifter this is based on a Billet Quickshifter

Please note: The E-Series Owners Club and the writers of the articles take no responsibility for any damage or problems or grief that may be a result of following one of our articles. Make sure you know what you are doing, are confident and competent before commencing any activity. You do so at your own risk!

1.Take shifter boot off and remove shifter leaver
2. E-series only undo rubber boot from the trans tunnel, (AU needs to be removed from under car)
3. Jack up car and place jack stands under either K Frame - Control arm Ends or rails and lower car onto stands.
4. Support Gearbox with Jack and undo Gearbox cross member - (E-series only Undo Handbrake line)
5. Lower jack slowly gearbox will drop. (AU only undo the 4 nuts holding the rubber boot in place)
5. Undo the old shifter bolts and remove shifter
6. Bolt the Billet Quickshifter on with the provided Hex key bolts .
7. Jack up the gearbox and bolt the gearbox cross member and handbrake cable if you disconnected it.
8. Attach the gear shifter handle at this point as you will need to adjust the positive stops.
9. Undo the 6 x 7mm bolts holding the positive stops so the stop slide on top of the shifter
10. Put the car in 3rd gear and slightly pull back on the leaver to take back any in gear slack and do up the bolt in front of the leaver on the stop
11. Repeat step 10 for 4th gear but push the gear stick forward and then do the same for 1st, 2nd, 5th and reverse.
12. Jack up the car remover the stands and take the car for a test drive making sure you can select all gears and the car doesn't jump out of gear, If it does or it over shifts adjust the positive stops again
13. If all gears are fine take off the shifter handle replace rubber surround shifter handle and boot and job is done.

Tips
#When going to remove the 2 rear bolts on the shifter it is easier to remove them with the gearbox cross member still bolted up.
#When trying to remove the old shifter it may have been glued/sikaflex onto the box get a long flat blade screw driver and hammer and tap the old sifter off from under the car once unbolted
# Make sure new shifter is done up tight as the gearbox will vibrate and bolts will loosen .

Bolt sizes;
Gearbox Cross member bolts = 13mm
Shifter to box bolts = 13mm
Rubber surround bolts = 10mm
Gear shifter handle bolts = 10mm
Positive stop bolts = 7mm

Tools Required;

One other thing to add, clean out all the mud and dirt in the tranny tunnel above the shifter before you pull the old one out. I didn't and as its a tight fit to remove the old one, I dislodged alot of dirt along the way. Thankfully none seemed to get into the gearbox though (felt around in the oil for ages but couldn't pick anything up on my fingers).

billet shifters seem to be the best quality, a far better design than steeda/ripshift, the postive stops being one of the biggest differences, ive never looked back with my billet, made a world load of difference in shifting, the next gear is just about where neutral used to be, and ive never hit the gate between 1st & 3rd with this shifter fitted
