Procedure to reset ECU & TPS

RESET ECU
Drive your car around until it has hit operating temp with the thermostat open, head home then park it.
Take both leads off battery and depress your brake pedal to get all electrical current from the vehicle

Wait 20-30 mins, grab a beer and jump on the boosted forum :drinks2: .
When the time is up, reconnect the battery and proceed with the following.
Or you can disconnect the battery and turn the headlights on, that will achieve the same result



DO NOT TOUCH THE ACCELERATOR DURING THIS PROCESS ONCE THE KEY IS TURNED ON



To calibrate the ECU and the correct idle speed, proceed with the following (each step must be done for a min 2 minutes)

HANDBRAKE ON and start the car.


  1. Neutral with all electrical loads OFF
  2. Neutral with all electrical loads ON
  3. Drive with all electrical loads ON
  4. Drive with all electrical loads OFF.

When putting the car in drive place the handbrake on tight and try not to touch any pedals
If doing this in a Manual, place the car into 1st with clutch depressed (not 100% sure with a manual)




Throttle Position Sensor (setup)


  1. To set the closed throttle reference position, place the transmission in Drive, Air con off, and let the engine idle for 2 minutes.
  2. To set the wide-open throttle reference position by turning the engine off- but leave the ignition switch to the "ON," position, (dash warning lights should be on) then press the accelerator pedal to the floor and hold it their for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Then put into PARK and switch off the ignition.
  4. Drive the vehicle and check for proper shifting patterns.


Should work for all auto Falcons EA-BA


The instructions provided should stop the car running like a pig for 50-150 km until the ecu re-learns everything.

does this actually need to be done, or will the ECU learn the settings over time?

The ford factory manual ADVISES this to be done when resetting any KAM (Keep Alive Memory) etc.
The ecu is constantly adjusting for many parameters countless times every minute, the instructions provided assist the car to run/idle as smoothly from the first gear change.

Or the alternative to drive around like a fuckin idiot for a few hundred k's and let the ecu sort itself out... :good: do what u want

lol i was more referring to the TPS thing sorry
when i reset my ECU it take around 5 minutes for the shifts to settle down, but i might reset it again and do the proper TPS reset.
the idle doesnt change much cause of the gas research system

The tps setup is for standard fuel system only.
It would depend on the lpg setup, do you have vapour or direct injection?
It best to speak to the guys who installed the GRS, and whether the lpg has a standalone ecu reading a/f ratio or running of factory/aftermarket ecu.
1 way to tell it is - Do you have a rev/speed limited when LPG is running?

all good, i installed the gas setup, its just a gas research system with an auto enrichment ECU.
it still has the standard TPS installed, but that only interacts with the LPG ECU to tell it to prime when i put my foot down and also change from open/closed loop.
i was more concerned about the TPS reading affecting how the ECU controls the auto, it drives fine, but just curious to know if the TPS calibration must be done for the ford ECU to get the correct reading...

The easiest way to reset engine ecu and transmission ecu is to simply disconnect your battery for about 10 to 20 minutes and the ecu's forget's all learned parameters and is reset to factory base settings. NOT FOR EA. they tend forget how to idle and the shifting pattens are all over the shop.

lately, seeing as my car's not on the road, the battery has been disconected, but everytime i drive it, I.E to the mechanics, 5 - 20 minute drive. It goes alright, after letting it warm up (idle) the auto shifts as it should if anything its a little more responsive. Only thing I have noticed though is it randomly kicks down. When i manualy select second gear and apply 3/4 throttle or there abouts, doing anywhere from 40 to 60. is this usual even with the power button on.?
