Meh, it's $30 for the safety check, plus the bloke seemed pretty genuine. He booked me in even though they are flat out, as he said it doesn't sound safe to keep driving it around. I fully expect a four-figure recommended bill, as long as they find the steering issue.

Nah Jay, work put me up at the OAKS AURORA serviced apartments on Queen Street, and it was actually really nice. I'm going to ask work to put me up there for my Brissy trips from now on!

P.S. To anyone interested, I'll take $7k for this thing, and even supply a rwc!

So, it appears I may be slightly screwed, yet again. Got the car back from Pedders already, and unfortunately they could not 100% diagnose the issue. He took it for a drive, and said it only appears to happen when turning right while on undulating road. He was actually pretty cool and didn’t go straight for charging me $500 minimum to fix it, as he said he wasn’t sure enough of the problem. The suggested diagnosis is the upper steering knuckle binding on itself, as apparently the is a known issue. But as he wasn’t sure, he said to get a second opinion from Ford, and they want $130 just for the inspection!
I rang Ford spare parts for a new knuckle, and its a no list item. I am hesitant to get a second hand one as it could just be stuffed also. Not sure where to go from here?

Find a wreckers with a second hand XR8 or even a stock 6 cyl AU ( I dont think think there will be any difference) and buy a secondhand one.

Really whats $30? You have already spent $130 just on the inspection.

From momery its 2 10mm bolts holding it in. Go get ya hands dirty and possibly save yourself cash!!

Ha, ok, maybe a little thrashing! :P No where near as much as any of the other cars I've had! I tried doing some circle work in this thing once, but the diff is shagged and it pegged, so I haven't bothered since!

Anyway, it doesn't seem to be too desperate at the moment, the issue comes and goes. So I'll just keep looking for a replacement intermediate shaft to swap over. Hopefully that's all it needs.

All fixed! :D Turns out it was the steering knuckle and/or intermediate shaft. Just got back from visiting old mate Carl the Tickford man, who swapped out everything from the firewall to the steering rack for good parts he had from wrecks. She was good as gold the whole way back home, so seems that fixed the issue!

Now it's back to just drive it and wait to get some news from my boss vis-à-vis a company car.

More like 4 or 5 months! And I will contunie to do so until I get an answer either way, which hasn't happened yet. I'll take what I can get, a free car is nothing to sneeze at!

Anyway, the steering behaved itself all weekend, so looks like I got away with that one. The top radiator hose split slightly, so I put a new one on, along with a new thermostat and flushed out the radiator while I was at it. Attempted to clean the overflow bottle too, but it seems it is too far gone. Got most of the gunk out, but it's pretty stained. I'm trying not to spend too much money on this thing until I know what I am doing with it. Just fixing anything that comes up at the moment.

Last I spoke to my boss about it last year, I suggested a Mitsubishi Lancer, and he didn't exactly poo-poo it. If I could push for the VRX model I'd be wrapped!

As I've said before, no plans for the XR8 until I know if it is staying. No point spending money on it if I am getting another car. I will fix anything that comes up, but no improvements will happen unless my boss says no car. In that case, the absolute first thing to happen will be SVi.

Re: Ev's LPG XR8

Postby ClassicAU » April 22nd, 2014, 3:23 pm

My boss is going on holidays overseas at the end of next month for about four weeks, so I thought I would see what my chances are of getting a car before then. His response was 'lets revisit it when I get back' which I am taking as a no.
The reason I asked today, is that this thing has started backfiring on me again, the last one happening Sunday night. Since then it will not start or idle on gas anymore, so I cracked the shits and ripped the mixer ring off! I'll just drive it around on petrol for now until it's fate is decided.
I may advertise it for sale, but I recon I'll be lucky to get my purchase price back at the most, even though I have dropped almost two grand fixing it. My best mate expressed interest in buying it, but I ain't holding my breath on that one. The idea of a ute has been appealing to me lately, it's about the only body style I am yet to own!
Which means, the most likely outcome is SVi conversion. The gas bloke I am taking it too is booked out for the next few weeks, so it gives me that long to make up my mind.

I doubt it, no one is buying cars these days, used car market is mad dead. Plus just thinking about selling and buying again makes my brain cry, so much cbf! Also, there is so much choice, I've looked at everything from XR6T's, to 5 series beemers, to WRX's, to Nissan Stagea! I'll never really be happy with a car for less than $10k, so I might as well just stick with what I've got. Maybe this is where my life long game of musical cars ends! :P

There's a small but steady market for these things, yeah there's always cheapies popping up, but there's plenty of au tragics willing to pay good money for the 220s.

See a lot of b series owners getting back into au's for some reason.

I've not had an issue with the current gas mechanic, he can only do so much with a system that should never have been installed on this car in the first place. I couldn't really sleep last night thinking about this (hence why I'm already at work at 6am!) and the solution keeps going back to putting SVi on this and keeping it!

- FG's are awesome, but I can't afford a good one.
- All B-series Falcons can suck a fat dick
- I already have the best kind of AU I can really afford
- All manual LS1 Commo's under $10k are thrashed
- Nissan Skyline/Stagea, although cool, would be a shit daily
- Can't afford to service/maintain an old BMW/anything German really
- AWD/FWD is boring
- Couldn't help myself with a stock 6

Also, anything longer than a Falcon sedan wouldn't fit on the riser lift things in the carpart at work. So that rules out Wagon, Statesman, Fairlane, and most unfortunately a Lexus LS400 with the 1UZ. Which I probably couldn't afford to repair anyway. There is nothing else that I can think of that interests me, so I guess SVi 220 it is! :)
