Wow, thats awesome mate, thanks heaps for the info!! :)

I just sold the shitbox Nissan yesterday, so the diff will be happening as soon as I can organise it. Still deciding which way to go, but at the moment am leaning towards KAAZ.

Ha, yeah, it’s a 20 year old Pulsar. It’s a shitbox no matter how good condition it’s in! I was kinda sad to see it go to be honest, had a few laughs in that bomb around, was good value.

Anyway, I couldn’t care less. Of all the 8 cars I have now sold, NONE of them have been sold on the forums!

KAAZ FTMFW!! I think it was always going to go that way in the end, seems to be the most logical choice. Dropping it off at the diff builder next Tuesday arvo, hoping to get it back by Thursday ripe for skids!! Well, not quite, will have to run it in first.

I thought about it Josh, but decided against it for now. After I finish with the driveline refresh, my long term goal is to get a 347 stroker kit!! So I figured with the torque it'd be pushing out, no need to change diff ratio anyway.

ud be suprised mate.
they are torquey but a diff change really does wake these things up, and how long do u think it will be until it gets rebuilt to 347?
have u looked into the price?
if u do it dont use gt40p its just a waste imo.
i would be changing the gears without a doubt my old au had 3.9's with a t5 and it was great and my brothers has 3.7's and i wouldnt go back to 3.45's either would he.
cheers josh.

No idea if/when the stroker kit will happen mate, quite a few things that need doing before then. Clutch is next, then suspension, then tyres (if these ones last that long! :P ), then maybe an exhaust.
So you think the GT40P's are no good hey? That’s interesting, I was under the impression they were ok. I could possibly end up just freshening up the motor with consumables and get a tune and been happy with that. I just want to fix the running gear first.

Anyway, I called up the diff bloke again this morning. I’m sure he hates me already. They don’t have any 3.7’s on the shelf, which means they need to order new ones at $700!! They have 3.9’s, but I don’t particularly want the V8 to be doing 2600rpm on the freeway and be watching the fuel disappear! So 3.45’s will stay.

You'd be better off buying alloy heads and running them instead of using GT40p heads on a stroker.

I guess, but the difference between 3.45 and 3.89 will be quite a bit. I use the freeway too often to go that short, and be revving so high. In the I6 it was ok, but the V8 will drink too much. I'm happy to stick with the 3.45's, it still skids fine with them now!

As for the heads, you are probably right, a nice set of AFR's or the like would go down well. Like I said, that is still a long way off though.

why does everyone think that diff gears are gonna make it the biggest petrol guzzler?
i had 347 and 3.9's and t5 and got 680km out of a tank to albury and thrashing it around there then halfway back.
my brother only got 40km more out of his and he has 3.45's and just exhaust and tune.
as i said i wouldnt even go back to 3.45's in my au and my brother wouldnt either.

I never noticed much fuel consuption difference in a Windsor from 3.2 to 3.7's...
Good performance gain. I'd say going from 3.45 to 3.7 wouldn't be ultra beneficial.

yeah i wouldnt have thought so either but it honestly made my brothers au3 xr8 alot better to drive and feels alot better.
i thought the same as i was trying to convince him to go for 3.9's but he wouldnt budge from 3.7's and i drove it after it was all run in and it honestly made a huge difference.
also dont be suprised if the gears are no good anyway my brother only upgraded as his gears were worn really badly and they couldnt lap them or do anything with them and they said au irs gears are very common to be like that.

dont tell them that when you drop the car off... you could almost guarantee they would 'find' your diff gears to be rooted and need replacing if they know your willing to pay for a new set.

Thanks mate, I have been burned enough times now to hopefully not let it happen again. I don't really want to change ratio, so if they call me to tell me I “have” to, then they will be giving me the cheapest option. I’ll try and save the arse rapings for when the time comes to work the motor.

Yeah, but I’m finally taking the ‘do it once, do it right’ approach with this car. I did the stock rebuild already, and it didn’t last. Plus, I’m a car destroyer, so I figured it was required!
Nah, your right Josh, I probably wont go very far with it engine wise. Whatever I do end up doing won’t test the drive line out at all. But it will be nice to drive it hard and not shit myself every time I slip the clutch!
Haha, yes red is not the most desirable of the colours, but it does come up nice with a wash. I’ll get it cut and polished one day too. I still like it, plus I’m not looking at it on the outside when I am enjoying it most anyway! :P

thats good then mate.
go down to flexifit in hoppers crossing and ask for a paceys and a full twin system.
then get a k&n filter and a tune and it should do 180+rwkw.
my brothers pulled 193rwkw with those mods and it feels nice and strong through the revs
his is 220kw but the 200 cam is a little more aggresive i have heard and the bigger throttle body apparently doesnt do alot for them sours should pull just as good numbers.

Thanks for the info Josh, I hope to get all that stuff done eventually. That definitely includes 1.7 roller rockers too, thanks John! :P Wont be done until I am happy with the drive line first though.
I’ll keep an eye on flea-bay for headers though, cos the last quote I got from my exhaust bloke for Pacies was $1100 new! He recons the stock headers are not that much worse though.
I doubt mine has 1.7’s in it already either, being an early series 2. Not sure what month, but it’s a 2000 model.

yeah i doubt it would then.
yeah paceys for these are expensive but $1100 sounds verry very steep i think my brother paid $770 for his.
ring vpw and tell them ur a mechanic and ask.
mate of mine got his for his xw from them for $480 for windsor.
the standard 220 ones are good the 200 ones are a little more restrictive i heard.

Eh all in good time, I’ll get to the front eventually, I am working forward on this one. Hopefully after it goes in tomorrow afternoon I’ll have a much tighter drive line. The back lash on it at the moment is terrible! Then I get to run it in for a bit, which should be interesting. Something about slow first gear figure 8’s for a KAAZ? I’m sure they’ll tell me.

Moving forward, what are the gear boxes in these things like strength wise, anyone know? I believe it’s a T5Z or something, being an XR8? Just wondering if it’s prone to death like all T5’s or not. Seems fine to me so far, feels about the same as any other T5 I have driven, maybe a little heavier if anything.

i think it was only the 220's that got the t5z but they arent that much better than standard t5 anyway so u wouldnt bother hunting one down.
my au's t5z took my 210rwkw but im not that hard on cars.
hunt one down and sit it in the spare room for when u break it lol.
cheers josh.

Ev, $1100 for the Paceys is mega expensive!

ClassicAU wrote:Eh all in good time, I’ll get to the front eventually, I am working forward on this one.

Half an hour of figure 8s is correct - enjoy feeling dizzy as well as the strange looks you get while doing it!

Half an hour!! Can I at least stop for a spew half way?!? Haha, I assume it doesn't all have to be done at once right? I'll try and get it out over the course of the day.

$1100 would probably be correct for a fitted price.
Theres a few hours stuffing about, gaskets, adapting to existing cats etc.

I'd be also curious to find out what a KAAZ costs for installation.
