It is actually spun by the air moving past it. There is no way it can create positive pressure (i.e. what you would normally get from a turbo or supercharger). It will actually make the intake more inefficient, as it is one more restriction between open air and the combustion chamber.

LOL - "No purchases have been made."

I've seen something similar done on another forum for laughs. Some dude got an old computer fan, and whacked it on his magna's intake. All that happened was it spun up really fast and made a whirring noise.

it doesn't actually work like a turbo/supercharger they compress the air. the theory behind this is to clean up the turbulent air coming in the intake and turning it into a constant stream.

It also would increase the air pressure into the headers and by doing that it should mean the car wont starve for air.

thats my interpretation of it anyways.

Clean up the turbulent air? So what happens when this allegedly non-turbulent air enters the MPFI/BBM manifold hmmmm? It's not a straight tube from this fan thingy to the cylinder.

Increase the air pressure into the headers? Huh? How?

Starve for air? Yep, shoving an obstacle in the intake will definitely cure any air starvation the engine has...

There is NO WAY it could do that. If anything, it will make the air more turbulent!

wolf wrote:It also would increase the air pressure into the headers and by doing that it should mean the car wont starve for air.

It cannot increase air pressure.

If it actually worked some car manufacturer or successful racer would have done it by now.

is there a verifiable (hell, I'll even settle for wikipedia) reference to this theory? I really can't see how it "cleans up" turbulent air entering an engine.

1) NO FAN/BLOCKAGE:

Air enters snorkel, airbox, filter --> flows pretty much straight through the intake piping --> gets split up at the manifold --> cops a hit of atomised fuel --> air/fuel mix enters cylinders for compression/combustion.

2) WITH FAN/BLOCKAGE:

Air enters snorkel, airbox, filter --> fan/blockage hinders air movement, air is deflected off the fan blades, and the energy required to spin the fan slows up the air coming in. "Spun" air begins to "straighten out" again as it makes its way to the manifold (shortest route = straight there, not corkscrewing inwards) --> gets split up at the manifold (helloooo turbulence) --> cops a hit of atomised fuel (helloooo more turbulence as the atomised fuel smashes into the incoming air) --> air/fuel mix enters cylinders for compression/combustion.

If you want better air flow on the intake side, make sure your intake runners are of equal length (so you don't have rich cylinders & lean cylinders... in an extreme case), are polished (for minimum friction/turbulence), and are relatively short & fat to make the most of high rpm use. AND have them/your head port-matched. But that's looking at $$$$$$$$ and a heap of fvcking around just to gain a tiny bit more response & maybe one or two killer wasps. <-- I'm talking about std manifolds here
