Tyre 'issues'

Postby EFFalcon » July 28th, 2008, 7:58 am

Eventful trip on Saturday morning.

Heading to the snow Saturday morning, all packed, car loaded, with Bomber following.
Jump onto east link for a leasurely cruise upto ringwood.

cruising along at 100km/h and notice a slight vibration, don't think much of it, just figured it would be some driveline vibrations or something because of the load in the car.
kept going.

all of a sudden, vibration gets worse.
i start thinking 'oh crap, wheels coming off'
evasive action and start heading to emergency lane.

Kristy points out the window... where i see my tyre overtaking me.
then merge lanes... avoid a camry and park about 15metres infront of my car in the emergency lane.

Don't know exactly what happened but the side walls are still on the wheels.
Wheel isnt damaged luckily.

I think Unezed has some photos of the tyre/rim :P
so i'll await for him to post pics.

I've contacted Eastlink to see if i can get video footage of the incident as it was near one of the tolls gantry's.
hopefully i get a call back in the next few days.

down side is the fresh paint on the rear guard is now scratched and marked :(

Bridgestone TS-1 (or something) - apparently expensive and hard to get in Aus.

maybe ya car is just too low and all the scrubbing is wrecking the tyres???

it was funny seeing the tyre, what was left of it, rolling down the road overtaking us.

Was very amusing watching tyre fly past us. Pretty frustrating though, hope you can get the footage John!

Sounds like the tyre was flat and your rim has sliced the sidewalls casuing the tyre to come apart.
Maybee not a flat, maybee all the weight had the same effect.

Your not having much luck with tyres atm are you.

Unlucky!...

So the tyre came off the rim but the rim stayed on the car? That is strange.

i highly doubt it.
have had a fully loaded car before with these wheels.
probably a tyre defect given the history i've had with the 'other' tyres that were on the car.

considering i was going 100km/h when it let go.
the advantages of low profile tyres is that the car is still very controllable :)

I assume you went to buller or lake mounitain or Baw Baw, cause Falls and Hotham chains are fitted daily just after the pay stations, cause its that icy.

Word of advise dont ever get caught without chains $500 Fine :(

i dont think the weight had ANYTHING to do with the tyre.
we recently had a car load plus a heavily loaded trailer with no problems at all.

ya may as well get 2 new tyres then you'll have 4 new tyres on the car

I'm with t1MMy - you would have had a flat (hence the slight vibration) and then continuing to drive on the tyre murdered it - if you were driving slower it is possible for the tyre to catch fire, there is that much heat generated.

I had a similar thing happen to me years back when I went on a trip to Cairns - got about 40km out of Brisbane, and the car got this strange vibration - took the next exit and had a look over things, RHR tyre was dead flat, fixed the puncture and refilled it with air and the sidewalls were fuct - egged out all the way around, and I had only driven maybe 3 or 4 hundred metres on it.

The car felt perfectly fine apart from the vibration, even fully loaded. Low profile tyres ftw.

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.
