Australian Top Gear TV show set to be absolutely sh|thouse!

Postby Malakai » September 7th, 2008, 8:22 pm

I don't know these show hosts from anywhere else but going by their brief interviews (linked below) I can tell that they will be playing up the stereotypical Aussie angle. What's even more troubling is you can bet that the whole angle of the show will be the same.

Evidence:

Presenter number one Charlie Cox: His dream car is an FX Holden.
http://www.topgear.com/content/features ... /01/1.html

Presenter number two Warren Brown: He's not halfway through his interview and has already mentioned cattle dogs and cases of beer.
http://www.topgear.com/content/features ... /03/1.html

Presenter number three Steve Pizzati: Very first words out of his mouth in the interview "A beer fridge, some girlie mags..." Also he is clearly cast as the James May character of the group.
http://www.topgear.com/content/features ... /02/1.html

Have a read and you'll see what I mean... in the end time will tell, but if I'm right I won't be watching it. I can't stand that stereo typical Aussie crap, even if it is done by Australians.

one of the things that make top gear so good is that it's british, and has that charm, and also because the host are so damn god, Clarkson can describe cars better then anyone.

Just exactly what high speed was hard to tell, as the speedometer needle would bounce back and forth like a metronome from 0 to 280km, requiring some mathematical skill and guesswork to ascertain just how fast you were travelling. My optimistic mate always claimed we were travelling at 280, but then again it could have been 0.

Hmmmmm. 220 kph speedo in late XAs, 140 mph (224 kph) in the early ones. Fail at bullshitting.

Speaking of fail, that Steve guy's attempt at being funny.

It's doomed to fail whether it's good or not. If it's too much like the original, everyone will shitcan it for being a dodgy ripoff. If it has too much of it's own styles, everyone will shitcan it for being nothing like the original.

The only way this could succeed is if it were very different from the original. Trying to copy the original will only make it appear as a 2nd-rate watered-down version. This pretty much applies to any knockoff of an original series.

Except for Milf Island. I predict this will shit all over Temptation Island

It'd be a near impossible task to create a Top Gear spinoff better than the original. I'll give the Aussie version a fair go, but I can't see it going well at this stage. The thing is, the 3 UK Top Gear hosts work perfectly together. Jeremy is funny on his own as his range of DVDs shows, but on Top Gear the other 2 hosts make it all that much better. I just hope Top Gear Australia doesn't end up like Pimp My Ride UK (absolute rubbish compared to the original). I'd have just preferred a Top Gear Australia special where they come over here and drive the Typhoon for example. They could also have a challenge where they have to buy a 2nd hand car for $1000 and drive across Australia in it. Jeremy in an EA ftw!

As long as they do the funny sht like in the UK one I'm in. You know, where they all have $500 to spend on a registered sh1tter (ie. E-Series, early 90's Commo etc.) and need to drive it from Sydney to Perth or make it in to a boat. That'd be hilaric.

thats it, the challenges make the show.
and they need a decent budget to do that kinda shit.

if its too sponsor driven it'll fail
if its too copy cat it'll fail
if its too one eyes aussie it'll fail

but we'll still watch it because there are no decent altenatives.

Charlie Cox was racing BTCC up in brittan in like the mid 90's... I only know this because when I was young this was on tv on Channel 10 and I used to record it on the good old VCR. I have a tape of the BTCC in 95, in one of the races Charlie Cox had a crash that looked like he had wrecked the average VN commodore, He was driving a ford mondeo then. On some of the tapes I have from 96, 97, and 98 the same bloke commentated the races that I recorded.

However although his done racing and commentating in Brittan he is Australian (thats what my brother tells me anyway)

EDIT: I'm talking about the 1st presenter in the first post.

But if this top Gear is like the UK one (Humour Side) and has some of the aussie built cars then it should be interesting.

The videos look alright, I hope the actual show lives up.

I spotted an Aboriginal in the video, what do Aboriginal's have to do with cars except if they are road testing ex-taxis or XE-XF's with rusty twelve slotters on one or two axles. This is what I think will make it shit, too much "stereo-typically Australian" crap.

What's wrong with just making the show normal? I mean shoot at some great scenic locations, have some good challenges in the outback and do some of that stuff but I hope they don't over do it.

Who knows they might get it right and I may become the biggest fan of the show.

Does anyone remember the SBS/ABC show called Bush Mechanics?

Haha BUSH MECHANICS! I remember one episode where the abos were gonna go on a trip (about 800kms of bush country) so they piled all of there stuff onto a clapper XE wagon with no head lights and set off. When night came they used torches and hand held headlights from the front of the car for light. About half way the roof collapsed from rust/ overloading so they ripped it off and dragged it behind them with there luggage on it. Pure awesomeness that show. Maybe they made some DVDs?

*edit* beat me to it dezza.

By the way, the aboriginals have moved on from XFs. The first time I went (2004) to the NT they were all driving E- series with occasional spots of a AU. The next time (2006) they had parked up all the early e series and the EF-EL became more common while the AUs were more plentiful and the BAs were luxury cars. My old man tells me they have almost solely moved to AUs and Bas now (since he trip there earlier this year).

They all love the Falcons though. The Commodores and 4 cylinders were almost non-existant.

Does anyone remember the SBS/ABC show called Bush Mechanics?

that was a fuckin awesome show, watched it with dad when it was on, i remember there was a VB commo on there that needed a new axle from memory.
