New kid on the site

Postby Alec_Hemi » November 3rd, 2008, 2:01 pm

Hi my name is Alec, im 15 and I am saving up for my first car which I hope to be an EA to ED falcon. When i do get this car I will most likely get a DEV kit from Jim mock motorsport. I dont just like ford I am a HUGE fan of Valiants and will be getting a VJ Charger with an original 340 small block from my dad (btw its going to stay original). I ride motorbikes and do Muay Thai and thats pretty much all about me.

Hi Alec, welcome to the site!

The Charger sounds awesome, must be pretty rare since it's got an original 340 (Fireball?).

Be sure to read up a lot through our tech sections and build sections to learn and be inspired by many of the cars on here :D

Cheers

The 340 isn't a fireball you're thinking of a 318 but good guess.

Welcome! and for the love of god DONT GET A DEV KIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to say it first jim mock motorsport sucks teh cok.

When you have an EA-ED just do a little research on mods people do on making them go harder , you will find most likely more performance and shitloads more value for money then those rip off dodge merchants JMM.

Linky to fordmods JMM thread? I know their prices are high, their dyno readouts are... "optimistic", and that like many larger companies the customer service may be lacking at times, but I haven't heard of dodgy workmanship before (it's a big call to make when initially not backing it up with any kind of description).

Sucks for your cousin, what happened to his car?

the timing chain rattle was UN fixable...it chewed threw guides in 5000km, not to mention you pay 450 for a cam thats a regrind.

dude just do a search on fordmods. I will do one later. But from what I recall a fair few other people had this timing chain issue, and when they called about it basically got no help didnt want to hear about it, and then
"oh yeah sometimes they do that " yet never been told prior to spending shitloads of money with them. Not to mention bullshit dyno read outs. Basically a dev 5 kit could be substituted with a stock motor with a wade 1673. But that would perform better.

Just been on fordmods. I'll bypass the customer service & pricing issues & cut to the chase with the DEV5 issue. It seems pretty clearcut to me:

Shaving the head (or block even) a fair bit shortens the distance b/w the cam & the crank, so much so that the tensioner can't do its job properly and the timing chain has slack in it, thus flogging out the guides, farking the chain, & possibly resulting in catastrophic failure. I'll bet if you shaved a fair bit off your head you'd suffer from this problem too regardless of what cam (billet, regrind, stock, etc) you've got in your head.

What was your cousin's setup?

My cousins setup was Full DEV 5 top end on top of a healthy bottom end, full exhaust bla bla, and a GOOD mechanic fitted it, had other mechanics Attempt to fix the rattle but failed.

Although I do agree with shortening the distance between the cam and other drives will cause slack in the chain and the fact that the tensioner can only "really" tension one side of the chain correctly, But i think their weird wacky cam specs cause excess backlash, i think they ran insanly high lift to very little duration... " Sharp " lobes?? can imagine how it COULD cause this issue.

So if it's the cam that causes this problem, why do only some Dev5s suffer from it?

Regarding your 62thou(!) setup: Standard timing chain length? Standard tensioner? Etc etc?

Surely the tensioner only really needs to tension one side, as the other side is being pulled tight from the crank? Kind of like riding a bike, pushing down hard on the pedals will cause the top side of the chain's route to tighten and the bottom side to slacken. Although I suppose under deceleration the side which is normally under tension could slacken...

Do you know what attempts were made by the mechanics who tried to fix your cousin's issues? Different chain (if possible), modifying the tensioner, etc?

I'm not trying to defend JMM & I hope I'm not coming across that way with my posts (personally I'd get something cheaper too like a 977b or 1673), I just wanted to try & get to the bottom of this whole "dodgy" claim. Could custom/aftermarket lash adjusters be sourced for a harsh cam like the DEV5 or would you be limited to 11ty shims?

Yeah my tensioner bits are all brand new some brand i have know idea its just what the engine builders put in it :P but yeah
i think its all stock spec?

I think the mechanics just re-replaced all the timing gear, played with the tensioner couldnt figure it out. We put my old cam in it, problem went away.

I dont think there are any such thing as custom last adjusters, just yeah shim setup.. i was just surprised that a dev 5 cam would be a regrind...the dev 5 cam takes 2 1.1mm shims ontop of the factory shim and Hydraulic lifter.

yeah thats a turbo setup right there.

my complete rebuild headwork + cam and everything else was 3000 and it should make about 160+ just slightly better value i think.

So perhaps with your old cam (presuming it's less harsh on the valvetrain & chain with its profile) the timing chain was *just* within acceptable operational form WRT tension/slack/resulting rattle? Introduce a bit of backlash with the DEV5 profile + extra shims & there's your rattle...

Still doesn't explain why some people have zero problems and others like your cousin DO have problems. :| (QA? :P)

I was gonna be sarcastic and answer that, but I'll be straight with you.
Where are the drive in drive out turbo kits for that much?

Heres the absolute 100% no bullshit no bias truth.
They work, and for people who don't want to piece together performance packages themself, or get their hands dirty, they are a good deal.

Also where is the 7k figure coming from out of interest?

I don't know what's dodgy about their kits, speaking from experience they're very reliable and perform as they should (ok everyone knows their dyno reads high) but 99.5 MPH at the track isn't dodgy. And not having to worry about cops busting you (if you have a turbo) is also mint :D
