Written Off...R.I.P

Postby serial_fool » November 6th, 2008, 8:13 pm

The combination of my shit driving and a bit of gravel on the road today ended with the XR6 being a cripple. Wasn't even speeding at the time but just abit under 100 into a winding corner, clipped some gravel shit near the edge of the road with the LH wheel and the car fishtailed. I corrected it by that time I was in the grass and the rear was sliding right No body was hurt apart from a few cuts to my face when the side window shattered and some bruising from the impacts. Sunnies and a Long Sleeve Shirt ftw otherwise I'd be alot worse off. I managed to take out around about 3 oak posts and 9 metal beams from a wire fence.

I got the front clear of the fence but the rear drifted into the posts and I knew I was fucked- tried to keep her straight and parked it on the side of the road.

The XR6 is fucked from the RHS front door back, bent the roofline back by 3 inches and now the right side doors are in the cabin to the point where they are pushing against the seats. Watts linkage mounting for the diff shattered the diff seal on impact. Rear bumber broken clean off. Door sill just as pushed in as the doors. B pillar pushed in by 2 inches. Looking for a decent Eb/ed to put all the XR goodies on now....

Word to the wise- keep your wits about you even when you are alone on a road that you even go by twice a day, you never know what the **** can jump out and catch you off gaurd.

Pics of damage uploading now...haven't got any the eb.

Thanks Dan but I'll see if I can't pull something decent together from the cars around here first. I don't like my chances though. I will keep you in mind though definately.

Good to see you walked away from it, could have been much worse if you ploughed straight through the fence into those rather large trees in the background...

Too true Dezza, I remember reading something a few years back that the EA - ED is still rating rather highly compared to some new cars (Definition of new cars could mean Korean Barinas though :P) Pretty good considering there are no air bags.

Good luck with a reshell... Any chance of getting insurance to come to the party??

Whoa!

Your a very lucky person to come out of that ok. Like Fairlane_Ghia said, it could have sent you into those big ass trees in the paddock there but it didnt. Glad your ok. Sometimes it take things like this to happen to give you a little push along for your next project

Oh man, I couldn't even imagine doing that at ~100k's - thankfully you are well enough to tell the tale .....

This is what happened to me at ~60k's last weekend in the wet going downhill around a corner:
Image Image Image Image

From that I got a damaged panel, bumper, plastic light cover
Image

Worst of all was the snapped steering rack
Image

Sorry to hijack on your post, but thought we could share the recent damage love :|

Funnily enough my steering rack+ front gaurds all made it without a scratch. Scares the shit out of ya doesnt it? I've been involved in accidents before at the Speedway but being out on the open road is totally different ball game.

Pics of the EB coming tomorrow.

Yep, all of my accidents in life thankfully were all low speed ones.... a couple of spin arounds at roundabouts (in traffic mind you) scared me a bit (had an EA with bald front tyres.... happened 3 times! silly me - i did finally replace those tyres).

Biggest accident, was a ~65km/h head on into the front corner of a car that suddenly pulled out from a side street (stop sign) right in front of me in the early hours of the morning - granted the sun MAY have been blinding the other driver, but he was at a stop sign ffs! I escaped that one with seatbelt bruising (still bloody hurt for weeks though), but the collision completely obliterated the front-end and hence the car was written-off... got a handy cheque from insurance (4 times what I paid for the car - a little Mitsubishi) and bought my current EB. Now, I have gone and almost buggered this one too! :(

And now..

Repaired the diff today which involved putting in a new axle and diff seal. Then got the porterpower out and pushed her to the point where some EA doors can be fitted and closed. Only two more weeks in the school year left so I'm thinking if I can just make it to the holidays then hopefully I'll have a nice and new shell to transfer too. Maybe even add some twinlights too but one step at a time...

Being charged for careless driving, even though the only person involved with the accident was me, the cop I got is a by-the-book wanker who once fined an old lady for J walking across our streets. Anyone got any advice?

I aint losing my license over this shit- my first accident since getting my license too.

IMO I would make a note of the roads condition. With any luck the road is a shitty old run down, pot holes everywhere, unfinished on the edge type.
Dont get lippy with the cop, it will only make your case alot worse.

*EDIT*

Failing that, go to the cops superior and complain about him/her.
