masking tape is the best for doing things like that, you dont mess around do you? your car is getting better and better every day, gear boot looking good though, did you just mould it into the standard surround?

Re: Kyle the ED4LTR's XR6 Ghia Project

Postby Kyle the ED4LTR » November 20th, 2008, 1:32 pm

Car now has a dilemma as most of you know, typical driving it like a bitch lifter noise :P. Im giving some lifter noise reduction stuff and hopefully the trip to Eildon will do it some good. But I have some options on the table, To replace the lifters it would be roughly $200 incl parts and labour. Now keep in mind that this engine has done over 250,000km so I run the risk of it playing up again. My other option is goin ahead of schedule and doing an AU conversion which comes with a 12 month warranty. So I need opinions on what I should do.

P.S: I was planning on doing an AU conversion but it wasnt gonna be this early :P

Cheers

Kyle

The conversion is in the 4 figure area, The motor is from an AU2 with less than 50,000km, comes with a 12 month warranty, done professionally. It's the same place TiMMy got his one done at.

Where'd you get the $200 figure from? Did you see my link in your other thread for how to do it yourself?

burnt turtle was selling a complete motor for $50 recently, dunno if it's still up for grabs or not. If you're getting an AU conversion in the near future anyway, just take a gamble and rip the rocker gear off the $50 motor. $50, 1-2 hours' work, done.

Well, that's just one option :)

I scored a free rocker assembly when I had a lifter let go, you never know maybe Kev could source you one for cheap cheap.

yeh but i then run the risk of picking ones up that are fucked, cars arent generally always in the wreckers cuz they have been smashed :P

lol, that's thru Ford hey.

You could also look in to what I suggested above, scoring an entire rocker assembly for cheap. Surely there's a cheap head complete with rocker gear for sale floating around somewhere.

I found an EA head for $30 in the For Sale section

http://boostedfalcon.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6350

EA 3.9L MPI Head - ( been mildly Ported) ( with all accesories ie, cam lifters ect ect)
head gasket was leaking .. unknow condiotn still drove very well wen in car... Buyer to remove..$30 or swap for something of intreresst

I'm assuming here that a complete EA rocker assembly is compatible with an ED head (and rocker cover). Find out whether or not it's compatible. If it is, well there's a $30 fix to your lifter problem. Or you could even get him to seperate & get the rocker assembly for <$30?

Well, have you looked under your rocker cover before? If you pull off the rocker cover and remove the entire assembly, in the method described in my post in your other thread, the lifters are these little metal slugs the size of rubbers on the ends of pencils, and they're stuffed in the end of each lifter arm (there's 12 arms, 6 for the intake valves 6 for the exhaust valves). If you shake/tap the lifter arms they should come out :P

Can't remember if there are shims or not as well... Shims are like skinny little metal discs.

^^^ it's a weird link but it should come up as an image if you click on it. They look something like this, also known as hydraulic lash adjusters.
