SE Queenslanders: Looking for a <$6000 car

Postby Bipolar » November 21st, 2008, 12:19 am

A good mate of mine is looking for a car fast and has his heart set on this VRII. He's just looking for something with a little bit of power and looks, and maybe a half decent system to begin with so there's no farking around later. Because he's not a car nut, looks to him means a little rice, not just a nice straight example.

He's gonna check out the VR this arvo after work, so unless it is actually a good buy, if you've seen anything better in the SE Queensland area, let me know so he's got something else to consider. Otherwise he'll get the VR on the spot with cash, coz he kinda needs wheels pronto. Also any advice on what he should be looking out for on a VR with 288000 on the clock will be appreciated.

Cheers

If the heads haven't been replaced by now, he should be aware that they'll probably go soon. Often with those V6s you'll find that the oil on the disptick will look OK, but removal of the rocker covers will show head gasket failure, yucky gunk oil.

Commodores are prone to power steering leaks, the oil pressure sensor is easily damaged with high pressure washes, and the spare wheel well almost invariably fills with water. VR/VS also have issues with faulty tail lights as they were not sealed properly, water gets in there.

Finally, a VR is generally accepted as the slowest of the V6 commodores, and it's considerably thirstier and less refined than an ECOTEC motor. Having said that, they're all rough, nasty rattleboxes.

A VS Calais or something would be a good bet, if he's set on a Commodore.

EDIT - Also, under hard acceleration, VN-VR auto's suffer from tailshaft vibration. Not a fault, they all do it to some extent.

Heads? Intake manifold Gasket ;) I just seen a VN with 550,000km lol and the commodore wagon I was driving while I was fixing mine had 400,000 (VT)

But common thing Iv seen when iv been in my mates workshop is not so much the heads (unless LPG of course) is the Intake manifold gasket screws up mixing the oil n that together.

I've got an EB 5.0ltr Fairmont that he can buy in Brisbane if thats what he might be after.
It's dropped on its arse with 15" 5 spoke mags(ford ones)
It has a win 2 1/2 system from extractors back ( not factory ones) with bigger cats.
It also has tinted windows as well.

I'm chasing $3000 or best offer.

Pm me for pics and other info

cheers

He just called a few hours ago and looks like he's picked up an EL GLi. But thanks anyway. Glad he got that and not the VR - it ended up being a busted piece of shit.

Yeah, driving it home it stalled then wouldn't kick over. Lucky it happened where it did coz he was just about on the Hornibrook Bridge. They sent a towie out and carted it all the way back to Moorooka. They're fixing it for him, and they told him it's the 'accelerator module'. I'm no expert, but I've never heard anyone mention that on an E-Series before.

lol accel module? what are they smoking i want some! if it stalled and wouldnt kick over its like a no power issue....Fuseable links or something along those lines...the bem can stop cranking but that shouldnt stall it if it fucks up.

Yeah I thought it sounded dodge. I figured it was more to do with ignition.

He finally picked it up today. Everything looks OK, just bloody filthy. Driver's seat's a bit worn and the selector knob for the dimmer/interior light is missing, but that's all I could find. Took it for a burn around the block and everything feels/sounds normal. Has some type of extractors, no resonator, pod and an auto cooler. The kunts left greasy handprints all over the engine bay and around the body. Needs lowering and despoilering but he's not interested - just wants to drive it. I'll give the headlights a polish but.
