Extractors V Headers

Postby Frost » November 21st, 2008, 11:11 pm

Ok I had a discussion earlier with a member on here about extractors v headers, from what I had learn't they were the same thing, but this member dared challenge that information, so I dived a little further asking a engine builder.

I thought it was just another Aussie/Yank meaning thing but after speaking and doing some more research I may have been wrong, And so is pacemaker.com.au

But I thought it was as simple as

exhaust manifold = headers = extractors.

But 2 people and something on google said that they are different depending on what you are trying to acheive, and how the pipes are ran.

Headers just allow the gases to flow out, using 4/6/8 lengths of tube all the same length into a collector

Extractors apparently are designed for "power extraction" and the way they are designed cause a venturi effect pulling the gasses out (semi quoted off a member on this forum)

Someone explain tell me if I'm right or wrong.

Oh and to that Member if I'm wrong and you were right no need to get on your high horse about it, its what I learn't over the years and its what you learnt off your F1 Mclaren head mechanic that comes to tafe and teaches you and least I done some research to find out who was right and wrong, like I always do :)

According to SureFlo, headers are 1 of 3 different types of extractors, apparently there are 1.Headers 2.Tri Y or interference and 3.Tuned length or 4 into 1.
Could be totally bogus but sounds legit :S here's the link anyway

that member would be me..... Last yr i studied Motorsport, one component of that course was Exhaust design and Fabrication. The teacher was head ENGINEER (difference between engineer and mechanic? go back to google fool) at Mclaren F1 a few years back, he was also in the team who built the prototype Smart car for Mercedes and has been team manager at Brad Jones Racing since about september last yr. And softy has issues with being wrong, not that he was, but he has alota pride that boy. i was just trying to further the little knowledge he has.

no doubt there is other stuff in softy's post that are inaccurate but i CBFd reading through his rubbish...

It is also commonly called an exhaust manifold

Pat Go **** yourself.

I said After what you said I looked into it more, and it appears there is a difference. AS PER MY FIRST FUCKING POST.

Me wrote:I thought it was just another Aussie/Yank meaning thing but after speaking and doing some more research I may have been wrong, And so is pacemaker.com.au

I was just trying to get the correct answer, people have disagreements about what is right and wrong all the time, and as I said if I'm wrong so be it, just means alot of other people are also misguided and that a bit of the internet is wrong.

But again I do remember proving you wrong that BA wagons didnt have IRS (and dont give me bullshit about telling other people it was all a joke etc etc) you were set on it, and I do believe you were wrong about my motor saying that it doesnt have 500,000km on it because it did, and I am also inclined to speak to a mechanic with 20+ years experience when it comes to motor doing werid things than a 1st year apprentice.

Oh Btw Blacklocks installed a fucked Reco auto into Toms XR6, make worse noise than before and kept slipping, he now gets a new auto, i think ford up there need to sort out its service department.

Row row fight the powah.

This is an internet forum, not a WWF deathcage.

To paraphrase, AS PER THE FIRST FUCKING POST: let's continue the headers/extractors/manifolds discussion, not whose vagina's the most inflamed.

Wait, there's a difference?

Headers just allow the gases to flow out, using 4/6/8 lengths of tube all the same length into a collector

Extractors apparently are designed for "power extraction" and the way they are designed cause a venturi effect pulling the gasses out (semi quoted off a member on this forum)

The way I read those 2 paragraphs put together, it reads like headers and extractors are just a different name for the same thing. Extractors can be 4/6/8 lengths of tube all the same length joining at a collector, they're known as tuned length extractors.
I've always thought the 2 words were just regional variations of the same thing.

What ever pat, appears you have trouble reading Moderators post about inflamed Vaginas, clearly you like a little more inflamation

Pats exact quote "extractors are for power low down and act as a venturi to help pull exhaust gass out" not what I posted on here

As per AaronEF8 post, it does seem that they are the same, but appently they are not, we all learn something, I admitted I was wrong, even said it a few times now, but certain people keep thinking that I'm trying to say they aint different.
