I live in the border, it stays about the same, its around 1.47cpl but what about the people who do more than a tank a week.

The thing is the price cycle shouldnt put it up over 10c because its a different day.

The US dollar has increased compared to the aussie dollar though, which pretty much cancels out the recent oil price drop.

Current trading rate is 82c USD to 1 AUD. it was 96c USD to 1 AUD. And oil price was $140 a barrel. for every dollar oil should drop 1 cent. theres only 14c diff in the dollar compared for $45 a barrel so mathmatically the weakening AUD cannot effect fuel price that much only by 1 to 2 cents. Not it staying 10 cents overpriced.

Oil companys are slow to decrease price but quick to increase it.

It should be averaging nationally 140.9 CPL

Got grammar?

We'll work off your figures and try to make it somewhat understandable.

US$140 for a barrel when the AUD was 98c = AUD$142.86 for a barrel
US$96 for a barrel when the AUD is 82c = AUD$117.07 for a barrel.

That's an AUD$26(US$21)/barrel saving, not $45 as you said. Remember we have to buy the oil using the US dollar.

Postby Frost » September 15th, 2008, 10:56 pm

Ok average price in June when oil was around $140 a barrel was around 157.8cpl - 26c if 1c decrease for 1 dollar decrease. Should = 131.8cpl.

I said a difference in $45 a barrel compared to dollars strength shouldn't effect it that much.

So then say AUD was still 98c at $96 a barrel = $97.95c AUD a barrel. rounded to $98 AUD. $45 difference. so 157.8cpl - 45c = 112.8cpl = 19c difference. That is not a huge overall difference.

The point I was trying to get across petrol shouldnt of decreased 7c avg in melb for over a $26 decrease overall in oil price.

Edit - The US are 40mins into a days trading and there price has dropped to $94 a barrel and the AUD has increased to 83c

Why didn't you just say that then? I agree. You don't need to falsify calculations to make it sound better though.

The whole 'if oil drops by $1, petrol drops by 1cpl' is just a VERY VERY basic rule of thumb for people to have a 1 second think when they see the oil price on the news. It isn't how petrol prices are worked out in Australia, and to be honest I thought you were smart enough to know that. My apologies.

So then say AUD was still 98c at $96 a barrel = $97.95c AUD a barrel. rounded to $98 AUD. $45 difference. so 157.8cpl - 45c = 112.8cpl = 19c difference. That is not a huge overall difference.

Where does the 19c difference come from, and what does it have to do with anything?

Hows oil price worked out in Australia?

After taking in all the factors - EG we based of Singapore, AUD strength, oil barrel price.

I was always under the assumption for $1 for 1c.

But please explain? As if there's a different way it would be good to know

Ok, well I'll explain it in basic terms, as it is hard to get exact details about these things unless you work in a petroleum company. Or you've supplied and installed every PC to OPEC, Mobil-Exxon and Shell.

What happens is the petrol company in Australia buys the oil then refines it. After the oil is refined into petrol, diesel and all the other products of crude oil, it's put into trucks and unloaded at the service station. Once it's at the service station, you pull up to the pump, put fuel into your car and pay some money.

Now when oil prices go up, the cost to ship the oil to the refinery goes up. The energy used to refine the oil costs more. The refined products cost more to ship to the servo etc. Then on top of that, you have the Govt. adding CPI index every 6 months.

Now, say you're doing a newsbreak, is it easier to say all of that, or is it easier to say 'roughly, when the oil prices drop one dollar per barrel, petrol prices drop by one cent per litre' ?

If the 1c per dollar thing were true, why were we still paying 85cpl in 2002 when oil prices were around $23/barrel?

I wish the AUD was still at 83c :(

Just looking at the last few posts on here, it's interesting to see how much all of the figures have changed in less than 3 months.

AUD - 84c vs ~64c
Oil prices - $94 vs $50
Petrol Prices - $1.50 vs $1.00
http://www.summitracing.com

Yay for the Atlantic hurricane season!

It was a bit of a fizzer this year :(
I still need to get injectors and a MAF too.

if fuel prices keep going down for a while.
i think it would be a good time to get gas installed
less people getting it.
less wait and if ya lucky might get a good deal.

just what i think MIGHT happen. beacause no doubt the price will go sky high again

^^ Yeah no shite! Lowest I have seen was when I filled up last week and gas was 48.7.
Filling up for under $30 so beats $80+ in petrol. Although with petrol prices going down, and the lack of driving I do, I dont think I will notice a huge amount of difference between gas/petrol.
