Not really keeping in the time-line, but i found some old pics of the boot install in primer. They were on a disposal camera that i forgot about :)
A nice surprise as i have no other photos from that time....

The Chronicles of Nwolb
Part II
Nwolb Reloaded...

Now the crazyness begins. We had previously found a WRX front bumper which we dummied up to the EA for shits and giggles. To our surprise, it was almost a perfect fit, and IMO actually looked quite good. Since the car was off the road until i could save up the money for a 5 speed, it was decided to fit the WRX front bumper to the car. Work began on making it fit, and looking at the car more and more with that front bar on, I felt it need a set of side skirts and rear skirt. A bit of wrecker hopping found a cheap set of USC side skirts and a brock rear bar. An XR lip spoiler was also sourced from Al aka Gunns. Dummying the body kit to the car, it was evident the 16" FTR's would simply not do, and were promptly sold off to make way for a larger set of wheels more suited to the suddenly beefed up body of the car. A suggestion from a friend who was helping me paint the bodykit, was to paint the entire car. Initially i rejected the idea, but the thought seem to linger in the back of my mind more and more until i gave in to temptation and gave it the go ahead. What started out as a simple front bumper change was suddenly escalating into a much more serious project.

Image

Image

Image

Dis-assembly of the car was commenced, bringing it back to what it looked like a year or so ago when she was stripped to do the interior conversion. Prep work was then started, scuffing the clear back in preparation for the primer. It was not yet decided what colour the car would be, and was a toss up between blood orange and mercury silver. Suggestions from others convinced me that she would be blood orange, and as we went to purchase the paint a final decision had to be made. Looking back and forth at the two colors and trying to picture the end result, I did a last minute flip flop and chose the mercury silver. Now when it comes to my car, i can be very suggestive, and this was the one decision that i'm VERY glad i went with my heart. The next rediculous idea i had was more of a "not entirely serious" one, and that was to put a BA bulge on the bonnet. My mate who was helping me with the prep loved the idea, and suggested we graft a real one on rather than a fiber-glass copy. A slightly damaged BA XR8 bonnet was purchased not long after, and work began carefully cutting (ie angle grinding) the two bonnets up to graft together. The bulge was welded into place, and yet another suggestion from my friend was made to build up some sharp lines beside the bonnet rather than grafting it flush. This was given the go ahead, and work began creating the new lines. A sunroof was purchased as well, but i later rejected the idea as it seemed like too much hassle, and was not keen on cutting a huge hole in my roof.

The XR lip spoiler I aquired was not perfect tho, as it had a small bend along it. The opportunity to buy an SVO lip spoiler from Gunns came up, and i quickly snapped it up. Some minor rust removal was performed, and the body was primed, and ready to start wet sanding. What was meant to take a few months took a lot longer, to the tune of two years. Laziness on my part and my friends newly acquired job meant the EA lay untouched for weeks and even months on end. Every now and then myself and John aka EFFalcon would slowly sand the car smooth, but the finished result, was not to my mates liking. We had cut through the primer in a few spots, and since the car had been in an accident years ago and it was not known what kind of paint was used, my mate feared a possible reaction with the two different paints. The car was re-primed and wet sanding had to be redone. We decided to spray up the engine bay in the garage to both save time in the spray booth and so we could start reassembling the engine. We also had a go at spraying the fiddly little exterior plastics at the same time, but ran into problems as the paint was catching far too much dust in the garage, and only one door handle and one side mirror came out respectable.

Something had to be done in the stereo department, as the equipment I had was quite large and would take up most of the boot with the gas tank in there as well. Sadly, i parted with the two alpine amps and sub in favor of something that would take up less room and would yield higher sound quality rather than outright volume. Over a few months i purchased four smaller Audison amps and two 10 Hertz subs, and work began on a new boot install that would both look classier and still allow the boot to be use-able. At this time, provisions were made to fit my dual battery setup as well, having one battery mounted either side of the gas tank. Later on I sold everything but one amp, my front speakers and my head-unit. Both Optima yellow top batteries were also dead for some reason, and opted to just get a normal battery instead.

In this period, I had purchased the 5 speed manual, some braided brake lines and slotted rotors all round. Originally i was going to purchase a set of 18" ANZ Mayhems, as they were big, chrome, had some dish and were relatively cheap. Just for fun, I went down to "the Wheel Boyz", which specialized in billet wheels to see what they had and to compare prices. I fell in love with the Bonspeed Clutches, but was not game enough to spend the premium for them. A few weeks later, i reconsidered and ordered myself a set of 18"x 8" Bonspeed clutches with max dish! (i said i was impulsive :P). As with everything i order, the Bonspeeds took a lot longer to arrive than was originally quoted, but the wait was worth it! At around the same time, i ordered myself an Exedy cusion button clutch and also sent a few items away to get porcelain coated, including Rocker cover, intake piping, intake manifold, throttle body and compressor housing for the blower. Once they arrived back, I dummied up the parts and was INCREDIBLY happy with what i saw. The clutch was then bolted on, and the 5 speed was bolted into place. After this I slowly started putting the engine back together, mainly because i couldn't wait to see what it would look like when completed.

The Chronicles of Nwolb
Part III
Return of Nwolb...

After a while, I finally decided to pull my finger out and got into the prep work. In an effort to not repeat the same mistakes I did before, I spent days and days and days carefully sanding the car and trying not to go through the primer. Further work was also done on the body kit, but the more we worked on it, the more it looked like too much work to bother with. The WRX front bar idea was on the cutting board, and i was starting to take interest in other prefab front bars available for the EA-ED's. One body kit caught my eye, tho it was not the front bumper that appealed to me, rather the side skirts and rear bar. Alot of "should I? shouldn't I?" went through my head till i decided to scrap the entire planned bodykit and opted for the full MMM bodykit. Unfortunately we primed the body kit a little too hastily, as a miscommunication between me and my mate meant we had forgotten to use plastic primer first. Because of this, the primer had to be sanded off again and reapplied, DOH. The bonnet also started progressing further after being untouched for close to a year. The bonnet underwent meticulous sanding and shaping, tho the finished product was worth the wait. The body kit was then sanded aswell as the exterior plastics. Now she was almost ready for paint!

We found a place that rents out their spray booth, and the booking was made. The night before was sleepless, as I hadto go over the entire car to clean every inch of dirt or dust I could find. The tow truck arrived, and she was off to the spray booth. With the help of John and Shaun, we masked off the parts required and gave the car another wipe down. Spraying had begun! But it was not without it's problems. Silly us did not have enough hardener, and Paintmobile down the road was conveniently NOT open on Sundays anymore. "Oh goody!" thought, and a frantic search for hardener began (I remember calling Sunny, Thanatos and possibly Sphell, but nobody had any). I searched everywere knowing i only had a small window of time available. FINALLY i happened to come across a paint shop that was open, and quickly raced back so that my mate could finish the job. After a very long day, the car was finally sprayed, and as she roll into my driveway off the tow truck, I new i had made the right decision on colour.

Reassembly of the car started soon after, and it did not take long to get her looking like a car again. Problems arose in the wiring department, as when i tried to start it, the dash lights would go all weird on me and later found that i had burnt out a power wire. WHOOPS, i obviously had a wire or two the wrong way around. A little bit of rewiring and alot of cursing later, she starts! Now it's just a matter of fixing up the loose ends and taking her for a test drive. Driving here and there for two weeks, i noticed a rattling sound coming from the bellhousing area. Theories here and there were made, and I proceeded to remove the transmission to see what the problem was. The flywheel bolts had come loose, and DUH on my part, there was no spigot bearing present. Now this might sound weird, but I wasn't a huge fan of the manual. The particular clutch I had was EXTREMELY heavy, and to be honest i just couldn't be bothered changing gears :P. I really wanted to convert it back to auto, and despite alot of people winging and moaning, I went back to the four speed Auto (kinda silly that this whole build was started from converting the car to manual, only to go back to auto in the end :P). At the same time, a transmission cooler was fitted were the gas tank used to be (actually two were initially fitted, but then sold one for milk money :P).

Anyways, now the car is done, but not without it's problems that to this day i'm still trying to sought. A few upgrades have been made, nothing major tho. Not sure what's on the horizon for now, would like to upgrade to a bigger blower but for the moment i just want to get her running up to her her maximum with the gear i've currently got. I've got a few small ideas for the interior that i'd like to implement, as well as revisiting the stereo department :)

Cheers guys, i'm more than happy with how she's turned out. Always had this picture in my head about how she would look when she was finished. It's only after i started putting it back together that i noticed it was going to exceed my expectations :). I have been trying to think of a way to make her stand out a bit more, but i think it may start verging on a bit too much if i did. Maybe when i get bored of her i'll do something else to the exterior :P.
