I broke my lawn mower.

Postby Damo » September 17th, 2007, 3:37 pm

I have a shitty GMC lawn Mower with a B&S 4 stroke motor, it's ran like shit since day one. Blowing black smoke, gutless etc etc. Started mowing the back lawn this afternoon and the thing was running like shit, cutting out as soon as I'd hit a tough patch of grass, coughing and spluttering etc.

Anyway I decided to give it a service, since it's about 3 years old and it's never been done. Checked the oil and the level was fine but it was black, so drained that and refilled, checked the air filter and it was completely black and filled with dirt and petrol and stuff, so I cleaned it up rinsed it out and stuff and let it dry, chucked a new spark plug in and fired it up. Now it was running even worse, making popping noises and eventually back fired and cut out. Checked the spark plug and it was already black and sooty looking.

Somewhere in between all this I tipped it on it's side to check the blades, what I didn't realise untill now after some googling. "When tipping your 4 stroke mower on the side for maintenance, it is very very very important to only tilt it so that the spark plug points to the sky, this is so the engine oil does not travel into the combustion chamber or the carburettor".

I failed at servicing my lawn mower and now it won't start lol. Is it fucked ? I only need to use this mower one more time, as i'm moving house very soon and the new place has no grass.

Anyone got any tips to try and get the bastard going ? Is there anyway I can clean the spark plug ?

sorry for the long and boring post.

curiosity got the better of me D4V3. Funny bastard.

They put me on hold though.

I just had another crack after letting it sit for a while, and it's getting fuel to the plug, and it's getting air. Should have bought 2 spark plugs :( I think this one is stuffed.

LOL I nearly fucked our new mower doing the same thing. The oil is meant to be changed after the first couple of hours of use, so I tilted it and oil and shit was going everywhere. Luckily it only blew smoke for a few hours and then she was all good.

Degrease it hardcore?

LS1 conversion for shizzle.
Try cleaning the plug up with steel wool or some shit, dump some petrol down the carby to try and clear the chamber of oil, turn it over a few times with plug out to get rid of all the petrol you just flooded it with, and try again?
If that fails, have you got scissors :?:

Damo, I'm looking at buying a mover ATM.

The DMC with the B&S was on the list. B&S are know for good motors. Where did ya buy it from?

Run some carby clean through it.

this guy for PM!!!

Cleaned the plug up, drowned it in petrol. Cable tied the throttle open, Pulled the air filter and muffler off for extra effect, and bang she started right up! Sounded like an EA with 2 plug leads off. :D

I'm going to try get a video of it now.

Wayne- It's a GMC (Global machinery company or something) got it from bunnings, it was the cheapest mower they sell. Briggs and stratton are good motors, I think this one has just been too thrashed and neglected. :P

I got a video only to realize my new cheap arse camera doesn't record sound. :( Put it all back together, and it got to late to mow the lawn lol. It turned out the throttle wasn't opening, cable tie fixed it. Probably got oil and shit in the carb too, it blows even more smoke then ever now. 4 strokes FTL! 2 strokes FTW!

Now it's beer o'clock. :D

2 words G & C there's your prob, you get what u pay for.
As u said a Briggs & Stratton or something decent will do the job and last alot longer.

It's a GMC mower with a Briggs and Stratton motor. The rest of the mower has held up fine, the motor is just a bit stuffed because it was never serviced EVER lol. I was surprised the motor even started looking at the condition of the air filter.
