EF Ghia Project Take 1

Postby SVD » March 3rd, 2009, 11:06 pm

Hi all thought id do one of these, maybe....
My name is Jason, Im 18, from Melb, but am studying in Tas, so i left my car behind :bye:
My car is a 1996 EFII Fairmont Ghia in Bordeux, fully optioned Tickford 6 and suspension, Tickford bodykit, Full Cappa leather interior, Premo sound and over 330k Km's on the clock (mainly interstate trips Qld 3x WA 5x NSW 10+x).
My Parents have had it from new, so ive got all the books full service history and know everything that has ever happened to it.
I got it for next to nothing as one my parents went to sell it and found they could only get crap all for it they said i could buy it for the price of transfer rego and insurance  WIN!
So far my Little modifications to it include, EL GT Replica's with Bridgestone T's02 (super grippy better then the Re001's on my SSS pulsar) tyres, Full proper interior clean so it looks almost new and is super soft again, new pads and slotted and dimpled rotors all round (awesome, brakes now actually work to an acceptable limit!) Disconnected the factory sub as it was ka-fuked! now have two Hertz 8" in Hertz box in the boot (gotta figure how to secure them...) Focal Polyglass 165V2 splits up front (finally after a hell of a lot of stuffing around!) and that's about it....
The plans are were it gets good!
Its no longer on the road.
The motor is out, the bay is stripped and in primer (mmm new paint soon :-D ) the body kit is off, the wheels are off (stockos on for now) the wheels are going to be cleaned up and re-powder coated white! body is having all the imperfections fixed and getting a new lick of the same paint, interior is out front seats are pulled apart and when i get back will be sent off to get more bolster added and made into more of a bucket and then re trimmed in the same leather color.
Thats all that will be done visually, where as the engine bay is going to cop a BA/BF DOHC motor and ZF 6speed and is going to be a nicely worked NA as i dont want forced induction (its gonna be a reasonably quick cruiser)
this is going to be a project over a year or two, and should be about finished (ready for paint and wiring etc.... when i finish my Pharmacy degree, then the pro's come in.

Now piccie time!!! (only a few because it kills my school net usage  )

Looks pretty neat.
the white wheels will look nice.

Used to be a Blue EB with white EL GT's a few years ago.

you're going to all the effort of going DOHC + 6 speed... but keeping it NA?
i reckon you'll change your mind the moment u drive it :P

Looks great. Good time to build a DOHC so you can try and avoid the issues others have run into. I'm with John - if you can get it running on the factory computer there's no reason not to go turbo.

Maybe, but then the project will just increase in time while i build the motor for it then :P
and then because of the boost, ill have to do my brakes and ill want a better diff, why do you want me to stretch this out

you won't 'have' to do build a motor for it.
300rwkw is a walk in the park.

I know i wont 'have' to build the motor, but i figure if im gonna make the rest of the car a high standard i want to do the same with the engine, either nuts NA or nuts boosted.
well thats what im hoping for anyway, for now though (just for now it might change) its gonna be a NA DOHC I6 with extractors exhaust some cams and a tune.
But seeing as its over a year away before the motor is in, it'll probably be changed depending on the cash flow...

Understandable...
It would be nice to see how far you can push a BA motor NA in an eseries.
low 13's are a given... maybe 12's?

If it was me I'd try and get a low km turbo BF engine (the one with the bigger bottom end) :-P
They handle something like 400rwkw standard.

Car looks nice, good luck with the conversion :-)

to score a 6 speed he'd have to be running BF Gear anyway.
so the above is not so silly :P

Ok well the fastest na dohc at the moment is actually a 13.97.
I havent seen one under that .
Also the most powerfull na dohc is 197rwkw thats the kpm one
there is about 15000 worth of tuning exhaust air boxes and all that other stuff.

I think that for the money u going to spend a turbo would be a better idea

Really? thats all??? hmm, i was thinking they would be doing more then just that, ok, upon seeing that, **** it im gonna boost it :good:
i was thinking they'd be capable of more power then that, i was hoping to hear 200kw wasn't gonna be much of an ask, but if it is that bad then the turbo....or supercharger, will be much more cost efficient.

YEah they have spent alot of money on it and its never got to 200rwkw.
Yeah it has cams and other stuff in but yeah not got there yet.
Its a bf motor too.
Its going to be cheaper for a turbo motor with just a tune

with boost, im hoping to see 300rwkw that is usable for daily use, because in the end this will be my daily so i can finish my pulsar project.
im undecided of weather or not to try and get the factory ecu running or not, ive been speaking to the old mans mates at APS and they reckon to go to a stand alone engine management, so does the guys we know at the Melbourne performance center, what do you guys reckon, i want the most efficient tune i can get and i want it to be reliable but i also want to be able to change it easily if i wanna take it to the drags...

Factory ECU for sure.
especially if you're looking to go ZF 6 speed.
Factory ECU isnt that difficult and flash tunes have proven good results.

Cool, I'll be watching this, learning from your mistakes. I've also got an EF Ghia (see my intro), but mine is in Cardinal Red. I want a boosted DOHC in mine, but not for a couple of years, (I've got my first kid due in the next month or so and dont expect to have the cash for a little while) .

Yes i have my motor, and my new interior!

Interior is from an NF/L FBT, complete (EL GT Spec seats FTW!!!)
and the motor is from an XR6T that my mate thought he could drive properly, he was wrong :P still gotta get a ZF 6speed, but money is all dried up untill years end  its gonna be a long long long project but it'll be worth it one day.

also anyone want a really really good (almost perfect) EF Fairmont ghia leather interior complete with door trims and centre console???

dont bother with 6sp zf... not worth the hassle and cost... plus they arent nearly as strong as people think... their torque reduction helps them handle the power.... but u cant get rid of the annoying torque reduction as there is no ability to control the tcm yet.

go 4sp ba turbo auto or get a t56 setup in there... will be alot easier to set up and handle the power as good and be as nice to drive.

turbo conversion down the track is a breeze.... ive got 236rwkw on a 120,000km old na ba motor with monza cooler and cat back... (Stock manifolds, dump, cat, piping etc etc...) 250rwkw would be a walk in the park with a snort kit and flash tune and 2bar map sensor on a na motor......(long as u use factory ecu)
