AU TURBO - POWER EXPECTATIONS?

Postby 004ord » March 11th, 2009, 11:04 pm

Hey guys can someone give me a rough idea of what power i should expect out of a turbo au.
I've got a 2000 model Stationwagon that i just fitted a turbo to. And now its been dyno'd i'm very disappointed.

Engine is stock internals, bolt on mods include:
-TO4E turbo
-50mm external gate
-700x400x80 FMIC
-Turbosmart Bov
-3" mandrel exhaust system
-hi flow cat
-36lb injectors
-sard fuel regulator
-400hp fuel pump
-capa flash tuner

Its been at dyno shop for 2 weeks and the best they can get out of it is 150rwkw at 5psi?

Any feedback or facts on what your car gets would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Matt

hmm time for a new tuner?? what are the saying the issue is??

you have all the goods so i can't see why there is a problem.. Au's don't handle boost as the map sensor shuts things down above 9psi but your well below that. hmm also the thing is the flash tuner is not as advanced for the Au's as it is for the B series.
Strive for perfection in everything we do. Take the best that exists and make it better.
When it does not exist, design it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough.

Shit you would get heaps more than that with stock injectors and a 12:1 fuel reg at 8-10 psi. Having said that that power is almost right at 5 psi. Being a stock AU motor I bet pinging was an issue because of the high compression. As BLKPHN said the flash tuners for the AUs aren't very talented, that is probably what is holding it back.

What is the problem according to the tuner?

i would have expected more then 150rwkw.

my car made 180rwkw on 6psi with a very basic setup and 2.5" exhaust.

i'd expect atleast 170rwkw from the above @ 5psi. if not more.

ClassicAu has mentioned a "boost cheater" device that links in to the MAP sensor. This was required in his SC setup. Perhaps you're experiencing similar issues.

AU map based fuel cut is a lot lower than 9psi, its more like 3psi afaiu. This may be the source of your problems. Is it lean up top? Got a dyno sheet?

Thanks for all your info guys, i got it back fri and the best they could get out of it was 205rwhp (152kw) on 5psi.
Is the TO4E big enough for these engines? Tuner said that it is a little turbo thats why its not making much power?

Have you read the replies above?

My EB has an AU engine, with a T04E. On 7psi it made 210rwkw, and that was through a stock exhaust.

There is a few T04E's depends on the specs.

There used to be cheap T04E's on ebay were T3/T4's with . 50 a/r compressor, .63 a/r turbine.

It could be one of these they were suited to the >3lts but i think some other may be running them

True true.

But the OP has been given some pretty clear reasons for the lack of power, which it doesn't sound like he's understood/acknowledged.

Thanks again, you might be on to it with mine being one of the smaller sized TO4E's, i am new to the turbo game as all my other cars are old school 60's and 70's muscle cars so haven't done much to do with turbo's, appreciate everyones patients stepping me through it.

I have read the above posts, understood them and acknowledged them with my thanks to the people that posted replies. Didn't however write individual responses or state exactly what the tuner dismissed. So to make it clearer, i ran everything you guys have told me past the tuner and he dismissed everything saying he'd bypassed the map fuel cut off so wasn't that, and basically ruled everything out except for the turbo being to small, which may make sense as it spools up very early (2000rpm).

Will look into its specs, Cheers Matt

You should be looking at 190rwkw+ easily with that sort of setup.

My EB made 163.3rwkw at 3 psi. With a 3inch exhaust and a vortech FMU. And with a motor that had doen over 400,000kms.

I'll check the turbo specs then if its not that it may be time to ditch the stock computer.
Is Haltech or Wolf my best choice should i need to upgrade.

Thanks Kaddis, mine is one of the smaller to4e's that you spoke about.
It has .50 AR and a .63 AR.

Sorry to be a hassle but can i get an idea of what A/R sizes you guys have on your to4e's.

Thanks again, Matt
