Ultimate brake dust build up..

Postby cranners » April 13th, 2009, 2:55 pm

Hey All,

More so on my front wheels i have a massive build up of brake dust, and also what looks to be a fine spotting of black paint...

The wheels are ment to be silver, and i cant seem to clean them back up to what they were...

Is there some sort of acid that will help break it down and remove it??

I think a few companys now have acid replacement stuff which works just as well but not harsh on the wheels or your skin.

They looked so mint when they were new....

Yep, Mothers Wheel Mist is a goer for that acid type stuff. Worked awesome on my snowflakes back in the day.

I have just ordered some Poor Boys Wheel Sealant to try out. Its supposed to be a sealant/wax for your wheels, stops brake dust sticking/eating into the wheel. Will see how it goes...

In general, it is always best to start with an off the shelf product such as Meguiars Non Acid Wheel Cleaner before worrying, or even a regular car wash with a high pressure hose and soapy brush.

There is no harm in using normal wax on your wheels after cleaning. This is assuming the wheel is a reasonably practictical design and it won't be too hard to buff the wax off (ie the nooks and crannies in an EA S snowflake or similar!).

And finally as already stated above, there is a huge difference in the build-up left by different types of brake pads. I've been lucky with my Holden, but some cars practically require daily wheel cleaning...
