A different Turbo EB

hi
this is sunny from india, having a 1993 Fairmont Ghia.
Initially it came with the inline six , but had to replace with the toyota 2L-T turbo diesel.
It's a great car, and gr8 to see a forum dedicated to the E-series.

by 2L i gather you mean 2 litre? or is that the model number...?

Anyway, its certainly a different motor for an eseries, did you have to change it for emissions reasons? I'm imagining its uber slow lol

thats unreal how did a ed ghia get over there,did you bring it over to your country or something.

when i first red this i thought it was sundeep over in india showing us he found a ed ghia over there

hi, its a model number i.e 2L-T, a 2.4ltr turbo diesel engine, found in some older Toyota Surf's u might have encountered in Australia. Compared to the inline-six , yes it is uber slow !

I've changed it since the inline six wasn't treated well by the previous owner, and demanded repairs, big time. And for a change, & keeping in mind the wide gulf between petrol & diesel prices here, i opted for the Toyota.

The pic was clicked when the car was undergoing a change from auto to manual box conversion, so some things were still to be fitted, will post pics when the work is fully done.

hi, The car was initially owned by the chinese consulate in india , which was later auctioned and bought by a Car dealer here, who sold it to me.

It's pretty hard, infact very. The advice i was getting here was to sell it / junk it , but since we liked the car much so decided to continue with it.
The front shocks were'nt available, so had to re-condition them. The ball joints were a direct fit from a local car. The bush kit of the car is not available , and so are other parts, which im lookin on australian ebay.

can u recommend a store/person who would have all the parts in stock and is ready to ship to India?

Anywhere you ask should be able to ship to india no problems. I would just worry about the transit times. You may be waiting up to two to three weeks for stuff to arrive.

That's a strange car for a Chinese consulate... I wonder how it ended up over there, and how they got it.

IIRC, GM exports quite a few Buicks to China, surprised they didn't use one of those.

Transit times i can cope up with , as EFFalcon rightly said that it beats not being able to get any parts at all. So im collecting parts, turn signals already bought, tail lamps in the process, and many others . Some items bought will go to a pal in melbourne, who'll ship all the parts together to me in india.
Hoping it all works out as planned.

originally the car was an Auto with the inline 6.
Now its a manual diesel, the manual being retrofitted since the auto which came bundled with the Toyota engine wasn't keen on propelling the car much.

Planning on a paint job similar to 'Ford Blueprint' color once all mechanicals r sorted .
one more thing, wat would be the PCD number(?) of the alloys? since the present alloys do look a bit older types,im keen on replacing them.
suggestions on paint job & alloys r more than welcome.

yes here in india there is a good aftermarket support for the toyota motor. But for the Ford I-6, no support of any kind. One of the biggest reasons which made me swap the ford with the toyota motor.

Looks like it's registered in Punjab with the PB prefix on the plates.. Where exactly are you from Sunny?

If you have a VIN (on compliance plate in engine bay, starting with 6FPAAA) I might be able to track you down some history of the car in Australia in regard to original registration and build details.

This is mad! Going from your license plate it seems that my parents are probably from the same area you're from.

PCD is 114.3 I think (if its the same thing i'm thinking of) and blueprint would probably be a good choice. Good wheels would be some simmons FR19's but they're expensive...

a 2lt? sheesh, gone from one engine with suss headgasket to one that kills head gaskets and heads just cos it can...

must be as slow as a room full of, well, slow things... every hilux ive had with the 2lt was painfully slow. cheap to run but.

decent exhaust helps the head stay in one piece... standard 2lt exhaust acts like a heat trap, which cracks the heads...

if you can source a 2lte, they go a bit better...

i came to know of this peculiar problem of the 2LT's only when i'd installed it in my car, tough luck one might say. Came to know while surfing the surf asn forums. Now the intent is to prevent this from ever happening.

yep..I'll make a video as soon as the mechanicals are fully sorted.

The clutch and the brake pedal " basket/case" was used from a FIAT , it fit perfectly. And yes, the clutch is hydraulic. Although exact implementation of the clutch is beyond my technical know how.
The mounts were changed , both engine n gearbox,the shaft was altered. Rest is as was. The gauges all work properly , and correctly i assume.
All things apart it was all innovation on the part of my mechanic who made this Ford+toyota "Hybrid" possible, and is still on it. The 16 yr old brake calipers seized up a while ago and were replaced by local ones.

That's crazy! I'm spun out that you have an EB in India, even more so than it came out of the chinese consulate!

I'm interested to see what you did with the brakes too, and what callipers you used...

the calipers were of a popular rugged Utility Vehicle here in india..they fitted well enough. .and also its brake pads could be used now , which cost something like AU$ 5 for a set of 2 pads..quite cheap.

about the burnout vids, well, i'd pay to see that happen!

The total manufacturers who have contributed parts for the car are :
-Toyota
-Fiat
-Tata Motors
-Daewoo
-Mahindra & Mahindra Motors.

So , five in all. A team effort i must say!

dezza, yeah mate, its the first ever. But i'd love to see a bigger diesel goin in than the smaller 2L-T, like the
toyota 1HZ, or even better the mighty 1HD-T. THAT, the "fairmont/falcon 1HD-T", would be something.

Mmmm love the innovation, especially since it's all happening somewhere that you wouldn't expect it, and because you wouldn't think there'd be the facilities there.

If you PM me that VIN i'd be interested to see where that car started out it's life and whether it was ever registered in Australia.

Last time I was in India I saw a NC Fairlane in a car yard. WTFBBQ'd hard.

yeah the toyotssurf.asn site will tell you all the issues with the 2LT heads. went through 5 in 5 months so sold the 4wd.

good conversion to be different anyways. go for a front mount and you then have a intercooled turbo diesel.

when i went to sri lanka for a holiday i saw a EB used as a hearse there. tripped me out when i saw it.

EB as a hearse in Sri Lanka...well thats unique.

As for the electric conversion i'd reckon a diesel+electric hybrid , no doubt it'd be complex but would be highly efficient too , provided the diesel is a eco friendly one ( so as to do our bit to the planet , and also not to annoy the Greenpeace guys).
