ok got the head off finally...
there really isnt a obvious place where the headgasket blew. it was sucking in coolant on 3 and 6. exhaust side...

half the ports were blocked pretty badly, so i hope i found the culprit on the overheating problem when its under load....
one of the blocked ports happend to be one of the ones leaking and its located right next to the oil gallery..
Image

i found something a little disturbing when i pulled the plugs out. 3 of them were only finger tight!
ive never done a compression check to this motor cos it went well enough.. only changed the leads when i did the cam swap
also something i noticed.... the headgasket has the ford logo on it but the first part of the part no is gone.
theres nothing in the log books to suggest the head has been off before. yet i have the receipt for auto services and the raditator

so would anyone know the stock thickness of a eb head? so i can see how much has been taken off? if at all?

can still see the hone marks
doesnt look too bad for a std bottom end really. particlulary if its been on lpg since 96
Image

got the block cleaned up and wiped down for the new h\g. sprayed some hylomar on the gasket and stuck the gasket on with the head.
the head is bolted down too.
with the cam rockergear, and rocker cover. also have the tensioner done and the powersteering pump is back on too.

just have to refit the extractors. intake accel cable and cruise cable.. and also re mount the lpg converter.
im now keen to see how the car goes now....

some more pics cos i can lol

does anyone know much on lpg???

yesterday the eb decided it will ping its head off intermittently on lpg... flick over to petrol and it wont ping. change back to lpg it will.
i opened the flow valve up a little on the mixer (impco 225). i did it to a point i could smell lpg. then just before it pinged again i couldnt smell it.
im taking it to a lpg mechanic in the morning to get the afrs checked. (hasnt been done since ive bought the car . let alone after the head swap which raised the compression)

so anyone got any ideas on what to check?
i have a newish b2 which im fitting cos ive got a odd leak mark from the lower diapram on the current b2.
so im going to be swapping them and revising my balance line

found the issue....
it helps if i had a balance line still fitted. it didnt need it before i had the xh snorkle. so i gave it a try after forking out for a b2. it made the problem disapear. epic fail at diagnosing problem....

Postby EB_Ghia » June 13th, 2009, 9:29 pm

just some updates.....

got the eb tuned. the bloke had done the dyno power run in 4th not the usual 3rd most places do it (5spd manual) for some retarded reason. i asked for it to be tuned for gas cos 99% of my driving is on lpg.
seems to be returning decent economy.. 12-15 litres to the 100 isnt bad for mixed city and country highway. roughly working out 400- 480k's to a tank dependant on how i drive the car really
apparently my lpg was rich as fark. but i had no other issues that needed fixing..

startermotor has been replaced.. bendix had been jamming intermittently till it was refusing to start and disengage properly lol...

but then found what my odd clunk is in the front of the car that ive now got when started and when you rev it...
ive torn the passenger side enginge mount. thats going to be so much fun to replace with the log manifold still there. i'm just thinking of replacing both at the same time considering i have to jack the motor up to do one one side already..
i doubt it would be worth swapping the mounts off the ea for a short time anyway.. be just my luck i tore that one too and havent realised it yet. got to pull that motor out of that shell anyway

oh and to make matters worse ive cracked the exhaust just after the first resonator lol... oh well i'll get it fixed eventually

no point fitting old mounts.. they are pretty cheap. if you keep having issues install an EF/EL setup as they way they are designed they last alot longer

yeah true... its just annoying that its let go. just more $$$$.
but if i do them both at the same time i wont have to change them again though. maybe the rear one when and if i snap that one

as some of you know.. i stuffed a clutch cable on the last mini meet.
does anyone know if a v8 cable is the same as the i6 one?

or what would be the best way to heat sheild it? its not quite 12 months old.so im pissed its fucked already. just fortunate jollys had a el that was manual but they left the cable behind... which is in better nick than my stuffed one.
i have a good spare here but i wasnt going to make dad do the 200k trip to bring the cable down to dandenong.

cant get it replaced under warranty.. didnt keep the receipt
also it appears to have been damaged when i had the accident in november when it was in the ea.. (manual conversion came out of the ea)

im lowering it finally so no more dezza spec suspension by the weekend!
(obviously the front hasnt been done yet cos the weather is too shit atm)

rears are lows from jason (galapogos01) and the fronts are coming out of the ea which are sl's. and i will be trying to replace the mounts if i get the time on the weekend. or might do the clutch cable first...

a few progress pics..
was..
Image

now..
Image
Image
on the second pic i refitted the mudflaps.. as i frequent down dirt roads i dont want to **** the paint like i did on the ea. so im trying to leave them on for the time being..
also i still have 100mm from the base of the flaps to the ground so its still technically rw.

i'll be trying to do the fronts tomorrow. weather permitting lol

that kinda depends on the rwc tester in victoria huggiebear...
i was made to take the mudflaps off the xf cos i was just below the 100mm cos they take the ride height from the lowest point..

but yeah it should be interesting how it sits once i swap the front springs and have a full tank of lpg in it too

ok finished lowering it...
Image
excuse the shit phone pic. shit lighting too. i'll take a better one tomorrow when i have the light..

i ended up using the shocks that were already in the ghia again. they seem to be in better nick, but older than the ones i'd bought when i lowered the ea gl i had.
the past owner must of replaced all 4 at some stage.. which has worked out good for me.

only reason why i didnt use the ones out of the ea was i cbf'd getting the rears out of the ea. and i wasnt willing to fit the passenger side one again knowing that side copped the brunt of the accident.
didnt look bent but why take the chance, i know i shifted the k frame. so its hard to tell what else bent or shifted too

Postby EB_Ghia » July 5th, 2009, 6:12 pm

now some better pics taken of the ghia..
lpg tank is full and has 1\2 tank of petrol and it sits exactly where i wanted it to. so im rapt with it.
Image

Image

now ive gotta choose which rims to put back onto it.. ive decided against the xf snowies here but i could fit turboblades though. but i dont really want to.
i just rolled the rims up next to the car cos the jack kept sinking into the ground. but it still gives me a general idea though on what it looks like..

Image
standard ghia mags.. admittedly it looks nice with them now :scare:

Image
and the 5 spoke ones that i had on the ea for a fair while
btw i have to get 4 tyres anyway for both sets of mags so there isnt any real gain going with either set atm

i love that colour on a boxcar. Keep the ghia rims on it, they look ok

i wouldnt change a thing on the exterior, apart from bigger rims and maybe a ghia bonnet ornament

thanks..
do i need to drill holes for the bonnet ornament?

if anything if i was going to do anything externally to it i would paint the chrome strip satin black. i think it needs it to break up the red. and my chrome isnt exactly the best anyway

im using a el xr6 heavy duty.. Valeo iirc

the reason why it was shuddering was my cable crapped itself in melbourne a few weeks ago. ive got a second hand one in it till i get around to getting a new one.

actually isnt connected (same as dezza). i just tap the brakes to come off the cruise atm.
i have everything to do it but havent wired it in. i'll be using a brake cancel switch on my clutch though

im just going to piggy back the clutch cancel onto the brake cancel wires and vac line. all the mounts for the cruise where there on mine so i got the parts from another ghia at the wreckers.

just a quick update...
fixed the retarded exhaust leak that kept coming back.. found my rear muffler was blocked. and i'd cracked the welds on the front resonator too..
so i got the exhaust off needforspeed and fitted that.. much nicer.
you can now hear the exhaust and it sounds decent too

also had a slight miss that came and went as it pleased. checked the coil to see it has a crack in the casing..grr fixed now lol (i'd fitted a new one to the ea shortly before i took it off the road)
i forgot how much of a pita the coils are to get to.
unrapped the tape on the loom to unpick the coil wiring taped it back up and the coil now lives on the shocktower on the old lpg converter mount.. only had to extend one wire for it to reach too
i had done the same to the ea when i had it on the road.. only cos i had a couple die in the middle of nowhere

Image
follow the red kinglead..
Image

and looking at the ea and the eb photos its obvious how much tidyer the eb is under the bonnet

thought i'd make an update.. considering everyone that was on gor knows this pos likes making lots of oil smoke!

had a play with a compression tester today to find my rings are ****ed. but the h\g and head are fine.
its been making a little smoke every now and again, but it drank 4 litres of oil in 4 thousand k's.
thats 25 50w..
so i put in at the service i did just before gor.. (40 70w) to try to stop it so it drank 1 litre to 550k.. its looking rather nasty.

car isnt covered in oil. but my exhaust is jet effing black and it smokes like a mofo under hard acelleration.

oil pressure was playing up in the otways.so i know the motor is ok ish..
it will be driveable for a while but im having thoughts of getting another motor (short motor) re ring, bearings, pumps, gaskets, timing kit, and fit my ticky head to it..should go well after its run in!

simple fix would be is to slap another motor in and thrash it some more.
but i want to reco it so i know its fine and all running as it should be. (did the same to the xf with good results)
so if anyone knows of a cheap short block in victoria.. let me know!

also in two minds of going over to serp belt at the same time keeping the log manifold..
i wont be going to bbm as i'd have to move my gas stuff and sort out another mixer etc. and ive only just gotten a manual ecu for the eb. so im a little loathed going to el ecu now.

got a vid of it to show everyone how bad it is currently.
the oil pressure guage isnt lying!
and mind the screech as the a\c belt is destroying itself and i cbf'd taking it off as i cant drive the box of shit as it is..
i reckon its rooted rings. but dad seems to think ive cracked a piston??
as it wont do it that badly all the time lol

ive decided on the motor plans..
au short block recoed..
my ticky head, and cam
au mls gasket.
eb log manifold.. I WILL NOT BE GOING TO BBM!

it should go well after run in i hope..
im hoping for over 131rwkw (last dyno run after ticky head was fitted)... any less i will be pissed. but more i'll be more than happy with

it sounds ok. gets annoying sometimes but thats what the radio is for i suppose. also sounds ok in the tunnels too.

Re: EB Ghia's ghia.. au motor time.. and serp lol

Postby EB_Ghia » January 18th, 2010, 10:04 pm

ok.. an update.. change of plans.
found a series 3 au e-gas motor for cheap thanks to kyle..
reasonable k's. 160 thou on the clock and it wasnt a taxi either.

im needing the car alot sooner than i can afford to reco a motor.. so the au motor is going in with a full serpintine belt conversion. i now have the vast majority of the bits..(1 belt against 3 belts that likes to destroy the alt belt which isnt uncommon)
going to bolt it in and get the gas tune checked. and drive it
i would of liked to reco it but if i still want to when im more in a financially able position there isnt anything stopping me buying a short motor and going nuts with it

pics later.. cant find the phone or camera data cables atm lol

so things to do before the conversion is done..
serp belt.. got the part no. (as im running log manifold with a ef\au tensioner, efghiar and devilxr worked it out and is working well for them)
get an adapter made so i can have a lower rad hose (eb and au are different sizes)
some injectors that arent stuffed
ef powersteering high pressure line
oil and filters
see if ive cracked the sump in transit which i hope i havent.. but if thats the case remove and get it tig welded to fix that
oh and remove the trans and old busted motor lol

If u want some ideas with the au conversion im sure i can help as i've just done 1 as of a week ago let me know. Just have to do timing on mine and change the eb dizzy gear to a au 1 as it wont last.

160 thou shouldnt need a rebuild.. my old tickford motor was 119000k's and it still had the hone marks from factory...

im interested in how you can run a dial-up manifold with the serp and EF-AU tensioner... as i wouldnt mind doing it to the EA wagon...

also why bother with the EF/EL high pressure power steering hose? they seem to leak more often then the fixed type.

also if you read benj's thread he has just found out issues with power steering and heat so he has added a transmission cooler to the power steer line to keep the fluid cool, he said there is a big difference, so if you have a spare 20 minutes it might be a worth while mod while your at it

i know it wouldnt.. but i wanted to make it fresh. but due to other things it just isnt possible
also i can run on gas from the get go and take it over to my gas place to get the mixtures checked.. as a e-gas motor isnt exactly going to like petrol. higher compression. but i hope it doesnt ping on 98 or ultimate

will send you the pm from devilxr

eb high pressure line has a different fitting that goes into the pump. the return im using the rubber hose still

i saw that.. i may be doing simular but i'll see what ive got in the way of old coolers etc and if i can actually be bothered to hook it up

ok some progress on this bitsa..

took it up to mum and dads to play engine swaps on the weekend..
got inlet\exhaust manifolds off
tailshaft out
t5 out
bellousing and clutch off.

not bad really as it only took me 1\2 a day to do it at a relaxed pace

after i had the manifolds were off i found what cylinders are acting up. black as on 1246 exhuast side..
it was going good on the friday but as soon i got near my olds i started losing oil pressure and it wasnt happy.
got it there. and once the new motor is running good im pulling it apart to see whats wrong as ive also blown the headgasket too. which im amased i blew a mls gasket lol

but on other things i hate rear main seals! cos i may have to replace the centreplate on my clutch! going to try to clean it before i write off the clutch though
or just refit it knowingly and wait for it to die in a fashion desired!

all ive got to do now is. unbolt the engine mounts. bonnet. lift out the eb motor.
put the eb eng mounts on the au motor and put it in. then the fun begins getting the bonnet back on and refitting the rest of the shit i took off lol

lastly some piccys as i didnt have the camera and i didnt have much battery life on the mobile cos i forgot the charger lol

what sump fins?? you have to grind the mofos off to clear the ea to ed crossmember.

thats all i got before i had no charge left
so theres more whem im next there doing some more
