Postby Dansedgli » June 19th, 2009, 9:45 am

I think I want a ute now that Im a hektik dirt bike rider.

What are the differences between the falcon utes?

Other than the motor, box, instrument clusters and minor sht like trim are XD - XF's and XG's identical?

Can I buy a $50 XD/XE/XF ute and fit an E/A/B series motor and box easy?

Carby powered XF utes seem to go to 1992.

Why is that?

What improvements did the XH get over the XG other than instrument cluster, seats and an EF style K frame?

Are the AU utes 11ty times better than the XH utes? They look it.

AU utes are in a different world mate. One of the main things i love the the massive space behind the seats in the AU's "Supercab". Handling shits all over anything earlier as well. But for affordability and smashing through mud with dirt bikes i suppose a XD-XH is better.

As far as i know tray dimensions are all identical for XD-XH.
Carrying capacity varies i believe between longreach, xr6 etc. I dont know off the top of my head which models got the one tonne option.
I think the 4speed came in in XG, with the 4.0 ED engine. I think earlier models had 3 speed column and floor

I drive a AUII XR8, but really if your after a shitbox just get the XD-XF, otherwise try and stick with the XG/XH (XH got other eseries goodies like front end, steering wheel wheel etc etc)

I dont know enough about the models to give you an answer on changes between models, load capacity, sorry.

Longreach, Tradesman & Outback got the 1-tonne suspension I think?

XD-XH ute trays cut in to the supercab area that the AUs have. So what you lose inside the cabin you gain in the tray, if that makes sense. Or you can look at it vice-versa.

xfalcon.com probably has the info you need for E-Series motors in XD-F utes.

Carby-fed XF utes went til '92 for two reasons: 1) Holden didn't have a ute til the VG (1991?), so Ford could get away with the XF as it had no competitors, 2) massive abundance of leftover 250s & borgy transmissions. I'd say the XG was only introduced though because the newer VG was eating into sales.

Handling/suspension on AU utes is 11ty times better than XH. If you can afford it, get a cheap AU ute just because they're so much better. If you DGAF, just get any XD-XH for cheap. I probably wouldn't bother with upgrading a 250 for a 4.0 if you happen to get an XF ute.

Nah a trailer is a PITA. We have a communal trailer stored at a mates house and its too much fkcing around to get organised. The mav is getting parted out atm too.

Ive got a KTM 250 exc 2 stroke.

Thanks Steve and Dave. I would prefer to get an AU so I have a half decent daily driver for once but I need to find a cheap one. I cant decide between a 4wd ute or a falcon ute either so thats not helping.

Quick way to answer this - where will you be driving when you've got a bike on the back? Maybe something like an older hilux/rodeo/triton would be the go here.

Longreach also has a larger fuel tank, hence the "Longreach" name.

Buy a older hilux's etc are overpriced now anyway due to the minitruck era.

If you can stand the looks of an AU2 onward ute they win hands down. It will make a good reliable daily as well.
AU utes can be had for the price of an XH easy. If the tub is rooted they are readilly available second hand, same as an XR/XLS seats and the black dash/doortrims.

XD-XH are shit.
I am considering a late VS 5.0 if i can get one cheap enough.

I had a dumb moment and bid on an XG for $1225 and won. :S

Column shift auto. Air con and heater works.

Looks alright for a station hacking bush bashing bike carrier. Its on gas too.

Now I just need to figure out somewhere to put it. Who wants an EA?

I dont mind the XF looks. I had a yellow XF once. It did road rage well and skids, lots of skids. 351's ftw.

The body looks average but she'll do. Bumper needs a clip. Interior needs a clean up too. Ill put a big tool box in it for keeping stuff dry and some tie downs for the bike.

Hopefully it gets better than 35L /100kms on LPG. Thats what the mav does. :S

lol Dan

But that's a good price for an XG, presuming it drives fine & doesn't need much for RWC.

Column shift sounds great, gives room to sling an arm around the mrs. It's one thing I wish my wagon has.

Get full-comp insurance on the EA then park it at the Manhattan ;)

You should try and jump the ute with your bike. While the ute is on fire. That would be fkn awesome.

If that works, then jump the bike with the ute. Basically just jump something with something.

Ive gone around with a bit of touch up paint to cover all the marks they get from having covers fitted. Might need to do something more permanent for the marks in the tray though.

It needs better wheels pretty badly but the tyres are new so they'll do for now.

Not bad for something that cost less than what I sold my winch for. :D

Needs more EA bumper grey for the moulds and bars.. and could do with 15" silver steelies with dress rims. Also needs black door handles.

Mmmmm XD-XF door handle repair kit please. If you go to Repco, make sure you note down the engine and trans type for them when you go order the kit. They will need to know in order to supply the right handle.
