SMOKE THEM OUT: Steel-wheel hoons face new crackdown
BY ALEX JOHNSON
11/07/2009 4:00:00
HOONS who put steel rims with cheap tyres on their cars to do burn-outs can expect to see blue flashing lights in their rear visions mirrors from today.

Police are fed up with south-west drivers swapping rear alloy rims for "stockies" or "interceptors" and putting cheap, burn-out-ready tyres on them.

Acting Sergeant Greg Cressall, of the Warrnambool Traffic Management Unit, said any cars with the wheels were unroadworthy and drivers caught with them would face $193 fines.

"It's getting to the stage where I see them putting burn-out tyres on the back for the purpose of doing burn-outs," Acting Sergeant Cressall said.

All four rims on a vehicle were required by law to be the same diameter and have tyres of similar tread patterns, he said.

Acting Sergeant Cressall said the tyres on some cars he had pulled over with stock rims were so worn after burn-outs they had wire protruding from them and were nothing more than "death traps".

Most of the drivers were on P-plates, he said.

Some drivers had roadworthy tyres on steel rear rims purely as a "fashion statement" to show other drivers their cars were capable of doing burn-outs, Acting Sergeant Cressell said.

Warrnambool Auto Recyclers owner Peter Undy said many young drivers came in looking for 15-inch steel rims with tyres.

Mr Undy said he regularly saw the results outside his Cooper Street business, where hoons did burn-outs around the industrial estate.

The police crackdown won the support of Steve Griffin, vice-president of the Warrnambool and District Drag Racing Club.

Mr Griffin said it was obvious drivers with stock rims had them on their cars to do illegal burn-outs. Such hoon behaviour gave legal drag racing a bad name, he said.

The club held three supervised drag racing events at the Warrnambool Airport earlier this year.

It had submitted a proposal to Warrnambool City Council to establish a dedicated drag racing facility, featuring a burn-out pad in the hope young drivers would "get it out of their system".

If the facility was approved the club would like to hold between six and 12 drag racing events each year.

Acting Sergeant Cressall said the police blitz would also target drivers illegally using fog lights.

"You see every now and then cars going up and down Liebig Street cutting laps, they don't have any lights on, they've just got (foglights) on," he said.

The lights were particularly dazzling, he said.

Many drivers were unaware their foglights were on when they used their normal headlights, he said, but from today they could face $123 fines.

"Out on the highway, it's like a wall of light heading towards you," he said.

Police would also look for P-plate drivers illegally behind the wheel of high-powered V8 or turbo-charged vehicles, who risked a $234 fine and accrued three demerit points.

Cops are fucking retarded.

Queensland Government code of practice for light vehicles states:

Wheels/rims fitted to an axle/axle group of a vehicle must be of the same size unless otherwise specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

All tyres fitted to rims on the same axle must be of the same case construction (See notes 2 and 5)

Tyres fitted on rims on an axle or axle group must be the same size (see note 5)

Note 2: A vehicle with a GVM less than 4.5 tonnes must NOT have pneumatic tyres of different carcass construction fitted to the same axle, but the tyres may have different cord materials and a different number of plies.

Note 5 is just a long winded explanation of the exceptions provided for temporary use spare tyres and has nothing to do with the above article.

What that shit above means basically, is that you can have different wheels/tyres front to rear (provided they are within the other requirements for min/max width, offset and diameter etc) and you can even have different tyres left to right, provided they are the same size and are both either radial or cross-ply.

Can't imagine something like that being too much different for other states.

Someone get a hold of a VIC RWC examiner and get them to look up the exact wording of the laws regarding this.

You need to come to Warnambool and understand, that there generally is 4 stockys on the vehicles, and they dont usually run different sized rims lol. But ill go down next fine weekend and get some happy snaps and you will know why the cops down here are such ****.

If it wasnt for its smaller population, I rekon Wbool would top Bendigo for highest Hoon country town.

I'm just saying that if cops are going to fine and defect people for breaking the law, it would be bloody nice if they actually knew what the laws were.

I work in Warrnambool but live about 30MIN towards Melbourne, and we got a car load of boys and went to Bendigo last night to see what the big fuss was about hoons down there. Not a single car that was loud or being offensive except the one we were in, but the cops never looked twice. Warrnambool is full of wankers. I dont care if i see someone ripping a skid or racing off the lights but its the constant commodores on stockies which is causing all the bullshit with the cops. Theres not many falcons that cruise in warrnambool so dont think the Ford boys are contributing to this crack down.

Postby Frost » July 13th, 2009, 3:59 pm

Thanks to Clint(SNR) and his research it inspired me to write this email sent to the standard.

Your article Steel Wheel Hoons is incorrect, there is no law about running stock wheels on the rear of the vehicle as long as they are of roadworthy ness and comply with ADRs.

"All four rims on a vehicle were required by law to be the same diameter and have tyres of similar tread patterns" this is incorrect refer to vicroads laws below

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rd...E3/0/VSI26.pdf this (roadworthy requirements) at vicroads states that as long as tyres are the same construction (i.e. radial vs crossply) they can have any tread pattern and none need to match (i.e. you could have four different tread patterns if you wanted to) as long as the car weighs less than 4.5 tonnes.

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rd...340/0/VSI8.pdf this document (modification guide) states any rim/tyre combination can be used as long as it is no more than 15mm greater in OVERALL TYRE diameter, and no greater than 15mm WIDER than widest/largest tyre available factory on that model car.

No where in those 2 documents does it state the Tread pattern has to be the same, nor the rims the same diameter all the way around the car.

I think this is a severe misjudgment by the standard for not researching the laws properly and publishing something that is not fact.

I will also be forwarding a copy these findings to the Office of Police Integrity as this officer clearly doesn't know the laws.

beacause im sure you have read every law ya fuckin spaz.
not saying your definatly wrong but i think there is laws you havent read on the subject and different ways of interpreting the laws you have read.

edit:
i think probably one of the best place to look would be a detailed roadworthy document

I could walk into any roadworthy joint in victoria with an FG XR6 put dunlop SPs (Same compound), run a 18" 17" 16" 19" rim on each different wheel and the car is roadworthy, I just had a discussion with a RW tester and thats a grey area of the laws because there is no difference for a spare tire (ie space saver) and I still Havent gone over the 15mm than largest rim size available for that model.

Sundeep is a subject Matter expert on Vehicle inspections we need his input on this matter.

i just noticed in i think it was vsi26 that it says a car is not to be issued with a roadworthy cert if it has 1 or more temporary use tyre/wheel fitted
but that would be things like space savers n shit

ive often had stockies on the back of my cars and always getting pulled up for it (mostly with my ea, i dont know y, it didnt spin the wheels :P ) most of the time i change my wheels before they were un-roadworthy and rarely had a problem, of coarse the copper would always check my rear tires but unless they were below the ware indicators there was nothing they could do.

i would of been fucked, when i bought mine it had 3 different tyres
would they pull you over as much if you had stockies on the front??
I like the last point 'Police would also look for P-plate drivers illegally behind the wheel of high-powered V8 or turbo-charged vehicles, who risked a $234 fine and accrued three demerit points.' there goes my idea of getting a bfxr8

unless your tread pattern is different to that of the front wheels as stated in the OP's post..

Of coarse the tread pattern was different, 19" bridgestones on the front and cheap 15" linglongs on the back have a much different tread pattern n im not arguing, im just stating that in most cases from my own experience, if the tires were roadworthy they never mentioned anything about the stockies. Also when i took my EB in to get the defect cleared, i had 2 different tread patterns on the back and nothing was said...... Maybe ive just been lucky?

Ive alwasy thought as long as you have 2 pairs your fine. The wagon passed RWC and Vicroads check with Bridgestones on the front and Dunlops on the rear. They were all RWC so there was no problem.

I think if a majority of the police knew anything about vehicles we would all be screwed....
Let them go nuts fining fog light and interceptor warriors, takes the attention off real mods that would cost everyone big $$ to fix.

No, you are allowed different tread patterns, and also different ply numbers and materials, the only things that have to match is that the front tyres must be the same size left-to-right, the rear tyres must be the same size left-to-right, and you must have the same case construction left to right (ie, not mix radials with cross plys) No rules at all regarding matching tyres front to rear, same as QLD.

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

And that's why I've got $55 205/65s on the front and $22 205/60s on the back :drinks2:
