I'm looking for a change of scenery as far as work goes

Postby Malakai » July 23rd, 2009, 12:52 am

So does anyone have any leads for current technical positions that are available in IT in Brisbane? Preferably north side but I'm easy.

I'm currently in a level 3 technical role heavily focused on managed services and maintenance. I want to get back to more hands on stuff but at the same level I'm working on now. Server systems and networking is what I love most.

I don't do 'must have own car', 'must have own mobile phone' type positions.

If there are any leads that you hear of drop me a line.

Might not be your cup of tea, but ever thought of doing something like that in the Defence Force?

From what I've heard they are screaming for people in that area of work and it pays well. Just a thought...

Good luck with that. I just got told my contract will not be renewed at the end of next month, so will be out of a job also. I'm not sure about your level, but i am level 2 desktop support, and am having real trouble finding anything so far down in Vic. Looks like i will be off to my nearest Centrelink office...........

good luck getting money out of centrelink. i have too much money saved, and my other half earns too much. you pretty much have to have NOTHING to get a cent from them.

Yep IT sucks at the moment. Defence Force are screaming out for Communication Technicians and IT support but as most of them will tell you its not all cracked upto what it is, and even with prior experience its at least 12months before touch a PC. (Relearn stuff you already know)

Oh and there's 7-8years of moving around every 2 years to different bases.

Oh and most of the time you just get to supervise contractors. (Unless your a CommTech)

But with the over obdaunce of O/S Help Desks and Internationals running around who will work for Farkk all dont go quiting you job.

But have a look at JAVIT or contact someone in Bytecraft (JAV and Bytecraft are IBMs Prime Contractors, deal with Gov, Maccas, NAB, Westpac, Qantas etc etc) also NCR

QLD people - Theres an IBM Helpdesk on the Gold coast (check out IBM.Com)

Evan - If you don't mind driving or catching a train in the opposite direction from Mel-Ballarat, keep and eye on IBM.com as they have a call centre in Ballarat, we also have a Telstra call centre, Centerlink Call Centre, Austar call centre in Ballarat also. And they deal with companies like Manpower, JAV, DiversIT for higher people Temporarily for Contract work but if your good enough they will keep you on. (According to a Manager in IBM)

Manpower

I drove past a Tabaret joint on Springvale Rd, it had a large billboard out the front which said Manpower are "performing" there soon.

Wait, we're talking about the same Manpower right?

LOL @ Dave! I thought you would know their schedule off by heart by now man! :P

Thanks Frost, but there is no chance in hell I am going back to a call centre, i would rather not have a job! I did a small stint at Sensis, and it sucked balls. I am looking for Desktop support, or even AV support. Both of which I have experience in.

Good at working at heights evan? Look up Tech2Home (Harvey Norman onsite Tech Support), Stream Communications subcontract out these services, all you need to do is spend some minor $$ on PTY LTD, get some insurance etc.

You could also do Foxtel Satillite but unless you have a spare 50k in startup costs might not be worth it (And plan on doing it for years to recoup ur costs)

And at the end of the day, thanks to the dole bludgers out there, if you go to Centrelink (which you will get services straight away if you have no savings due to contracts ending and being terminated due to finacial problems with the company) your required to stand in line at least twice a week, attend 4 job interviews as setup by the new Job Network etc etc etc, not worth it, when it gets to that point you take any damn job you can get. Oh and unless you have excrusicating circimstances as to why you cannot take a job you have been accepted for (like IE your Monster INlaw works there, or your arch nemisis, or cost to much to travel there etc) you are bound by the goverments big finger telling you were to go.

I would love a job with IBM actually, most of my vendor training is with IBM equipment and technologies. I won't do helpdesk or call center though, I need to be hands on or I'm not happy, which is where my current frustration comes from.

I saw a few jobs with Bytecraft when I was looking on Seek last night, they might be worth a look. I might be persuaded to look at contract or temp positions if the right one came along but no contractor roles... been there done that.

I will stick it out with my current job and top up my FU fund before jumping ship anyway. If the right opportunity comes along the plan might be put into effect sooner.

I need to do more training too, the new server end MS certifications have been out for around 12 months now and I have been putting off upgrading.

So im definetly going to try and keep this job for as long as I can.

Tech2Home are a bunch of fuckwits. We helped them setup the entire plan for/in Victoria with Stream, consulting as technicians on the proviso that we would have employment. After two months we were told the project was cancelled "at the top", only for the entire workforce of Team Leaders to be replaced with new untrained techs.

There's money to be had at foxtel, but the setup costs are high, the workload can be inconsistent, and you have to be one of the "cowboys" (someone who bends all the rules) to make the big dosh.

Sundeep. Do you stay on top of the industry your working in? Like stay up with the new cars being made etc etc (ie. working at Vic Roads vehicle compliance or what ever you do) or hang on ill use a mechanic as an example, mechanics have to stay on top of new technology's being released in vehicles if they want to succeed, doctors with new treatments etc etc.

Same with IT. I stay on top of which way the industry is going I would be silly if I don't, play with new technology's, look into who's getting the contracts etc, keeps me ahead if I need a change, encounter new technologies etc.

So of course I love this thread because I have knowledge of which way the IT industry is turning - hence this thread topic of discussion, and at the moment, with the flood of Internationals, dodgy business practices (ie bringing the Indians to Australia (no offense to anyone of that culture on here) on 457 visas, paying them min wage so the companies with the contracts can still meet contract requirements (ie Software/Support is in Aus) and make money), and that there is too many IT qualified or claimed to be IT qualified people in the industry all wanting too much money.

And I admit Iv just justified myself in this thread and looked like an Idiot, but its true if you don't stay up with the industry your going to miss out.

On a side Note. Keep an eye on the NBN roll out in Tas lots of work going to be had in heaps of industries once the NBN reaches the main land.

Man everyone's thinking the same fukkin thing. If you're sooooo good at all this different shit, why the fukk do u bother urself with this E-Series forum? Like, why are you here.. what do you need from this forum? Why do you sent up pseudo accounts if you get banned? If you're interested in the cars, then why haven't you built some 8 or 9 second EF/EL with all the money you make? Don't say that it isn't wise to spend money on cars bla bla bla - anyone making the amount of money that you claim to make wouldn't give a sh!t.

There are heaps of IT guys on this forum and other car enthusiast forums, I hope we haven't scared them away from replying about the topic at hand.

I've been on a few cruises with other car clubs and stuff and some of the crowds look like a staff meeting at a software development company or national helpdesk of some description. It's amazing that so many technically minded people blow off steam doing stuff with cars when they aren't at the office.
