Are boosted members going soft?

Postby bentls » September 10th, 2009, 8:22 pm

I seem to see so many people lately who are too scared to work on their cars.... When I first joined I didnt do shit to my own car, but it didnt take that long before I did everything myself...
I've noticed on here (no offense to CVE or kev etc) that everyone just gets work done by others... either un associated workshops or just get paul, or kev to fit/do stuff to their cars....

What happened to the backyard hack mechanics?

I'd only get someone else to tune my car. I'm more than happy to do everything else to my car, gives me something to do. Only things I've had other people do is window tint and fit new tyres.

Unless everyone has done all the mods and simply not posting up about it as much... i've done shit to the car, but don't have the effort to get up another thread, pics, etc. unless it involves tits...

I used to get mechanics to fix my car when it broke but these days I do it myself as much as possible. I've had Kev help me out with a few things (for example, to fit the AU rocker cover there needs to be a little bit of filing done to the top of the head. If I did it myself, I'd probably stuff it), but stuff like the serpentine conversion I did myself. A couple of weeks ago, I changed the rear trailing arms, a few weeks before that I changed the thermostat housing, and the manual conversion and the clutch change were both done in my driveway. The only way to learn is to do stuff yourself.

My car hasnt seen a mechanic other than the day I bought it for a general check over haha. Everything other than the sprayjob has been done by me. These cars (e series) are stupidly simple to work on.

i try to do shit myself, but as i like to drive mine a lot i dont like it just sitting there, plus im pretty much not allowed to use my driveway, which is hella fuckin gay, jerk sister+mum. but anything i can do i try to do myself. my manual convo and 2 services are the only things ive had done to mine, asside from tyres

it needs a service so i might as well do that myself soon. also needs a tune. waiting for some extra cash to get cam in then a tune

I got Rollin to do my Lokka install, simply because I didn't know what I was doing, and also got him to weld some flanges on oz Zorst because 1, I dont have a welder, and 2, I can't weld for shit! Anything I can do, I will, If I cant, thats when I get others to do it.

really? The big boosted people all do the work themselves, and myself, im learning more with the assistance of Kev. so much assistance. But to date (from never looking at a car before mine) ive done brakes (It's an accomplishment for me ok...:P) power windows. i'm about to do a heap of other stuff inside that car and will fit a limo when a cheapy comes up. I think its the fact that 1. easier and cheaper options are there. 2. people that are putting on turbos, have done so, or are in the process of doing it themselves as not many places will touch e-series turbo stuff.
Maybe theres a general shift in priorities too. needing time rather than saving 100 bucks by doing it yourself.

I used to get Kev to do most of the stuff to my car because I did not have the knowledge or confidence, watched how he did a few things then gave them a go myself. Now I will do all of the stuff on my car myself and with the help of a few mates on some of the heavier tasks, usually only go to Kev now to fix a problem when it's out of my league and would prefer someone with some experience, or I have tried all sorts of solutions with no result.

Only way your gonna be able to get things done on your car yourself is by giving it a go yourself or watching someone with experience do it and then having a try. A year and a half ago I wouldnt have even given what I have done to my car now a thought because I would be too scared to break something or would find it too hard, everyone has gotta start somewhere though.

I still do all my own shit.
rebuilt turbo still works! :P

A lot of people goto Kev because he lets you help, and explains what he's doing.

like many people when starting working on their car, its a little daunting, and i'm sure we'd all love to go to a big workshop while they're working on our cars and watch/learn/help but theres rules in place that prevent a lot of that.

given time the get enough confidence from watching/learning to tackle the stuff them selves.

The other issue is tools and equipment :P

I started off with a couple of screw drivers and just bought parts as I went along. You don't need a complete/awesome tool set when working with E-Series. A 13mm socket and ratchet usually gets you going. If I needed anything I'd just run down and get it.

I don't really keep up to date here anymore, but years ago we used to organise 'mod days' where plenty of owners would get together and work on a car(s). That's how I learnt a lot of things but the thing that helped the most was giving it a go myself and asking a shit load of questions. I used to bug people on here all the time for answers (Wilson, Zervos, Karl, Damo, Ash, Dellboy etc).

I try and do everything myself, infact with what I have done to the car I wouldn't let the average mechanic near the bloody thing!

With two exceptions:
-Tyre fitting
-Exhausts

Both of them can be done much more effectivly by other people :)

well the only thing i have got some one else to do is tune it. i just took the clutch out put on full exhaust and im only 17 so i think thats not a bad effort. but lots of my mates wont even try to do things to their own car they say when i know how to i will but how will you learn if you diont try.

On my EB when i first got it i got a mates dads workshop to do the headgasket.

Since then i've done alot of the work myself and with mates (t5 conversions, wheel bearings, blah blah).

Did the BA conversion myself, and have done the headgasket on the EL myself.

With the supra the only work its had is clutch slave cylinder replacement and electrics for headunit and stuff, and done that all myself (big deal)

Basically, workshops FTL unless its tuning, and even then if you can do it yourself and you have the time to do it, why not...

I was happy to pay to have stuff done on the EL, didnt know much, didnt really care. Now I kinda like knowing how to do stuff, usually takes me a couple of goes, but yeah, helps when someone knows tricks and explains it easier. For big jobs like turbo/gas conversion and V8 conversions, its easier to get someone who has the tools to do it and let me learn.
