The sLowlane!

Postby Rollin » January 12th, 2010, 12:56 am

So I broke my ED at powercruise and have decided to rebuild it properly this time around - balls to the wall suspension, engine and brakes.

I need a car to lug my tools etc around for the next year or so, so I found this bad girl for $500 unreg. 93 model NC Fairlane Ghia. It was completely stock with mudflaps, epic ride height and snowflakes

It has a few issues as you'd expect, ABS inop, LHF brake caliper works a lot better than the RHF, roof lining is borked, RHR window doesn't work, the paint is CACTUS and it doesn't have enough power to turn the tyres off a T intersection while it is raining.

However, it has an LSD, the interior is mint, I have lots of parts for it in the garage and the drivetrain is very quiet, smooth and brilliant to drive (bar the complete lack of power). The cruise works, I also get over 500km from a tank so it's great on fuel :) Prob has 13psi fuel pressure or something haha.

As soon as I picked it up I had a look around for some better wheels, which I got off revengelane for a reasonable price. I already had Rollin Motorsport sik kunt modified Koni red shocks in the garage from about 3 years ago that nobody ever wanted to buy off me, so they went in the front with half a coil taken off the stock springs, and I took the rear springs and shocks out of the ED to get the back sitting right. The ED will get new springs all round with shocks to match before it goes back on the road.

I also picked up a disassembled slightly water damaged AU VCT motor off another forum member which I am going to reassemble, and I'm not sure if I should stick it in this or not.

The AU motor came with 95% of the stuff required- all serpentine stuff, manifold, computer etc, and I've done one or two trips to the wreckers to get the rest. I believe I have all the parts to do a full VCT motor with matching computer etc into an e-series, but I'm not sure if I want to do it.

Every hour I spend working on this car is an hour probably better spent on the ED :/ But it would be very cool to do a fully functional engine swap. I'm in a pickle.

What would a complete running AU VCT motor with all supporting hardware be worth? Probably more by itself than the value of this car with the motor fitted lol.

Anyway, this thread is useless without pics!

Soon after lowering, note dodgy hanging bumper :(

Nice fixed bumper :)

What is the best way to spend my money and time? Logic says build the VCT motor and ebay it for 11ty profits, but my natural idiocy and addiction to unnecessary pain is leaning very much towards putting the VCT motor in...
Image

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

There is an unsold vct motor on eBay at 500 ATM. Ashcook from fm is trying to sell it. 500k's to a tank is why I left the au engine in the ute. Less work on the daily, more on the Ed IMO.

Nice ride height. What kind of wheels are they?

But I agree with the above. ED > Anything. :good:

You can dodge the AU VCT solenoid to switch off the BBM output in EF/EL ECUs -- it's close to the VCT switch point and it's a lot easier than running an AU ECU and fucking with looms.

That said, I vote keep the stocker in there, maybe extractors and a bit more timing advance or a J3 ( :D :D :D ) to squeeze some more economy out of it.

Dont do it man. ever bit of money and time you spend on it it will be longer until the ED is going.

Also knowing your luck you would get half way through the conversion and be missing something and do you want 2 cars sitting there not going?

VCT FTL. Does anyone even care about those motors anyway? I didn't think there was much you could do to them. Although it would be interesting to see how it would respond to boost. Was it purchased to go in the ED?

Leave daily as is and flog off the AU motor. Guessing maybe $500 odd for the VCT motor depending on kms and accessories. Nobody seems to appreciate them anymore than a regular one.

So yeh....

The suspension I already had, and there is no way known I'd drive a stock ride height E-series!! Wheels were cheap and fifty times better than the snowflakes so they had to happen.

Seems nobody has any love for the VCT motor conversion, which is kinda good and kinda bad lol. In that case, I'll soon have a freshly assembled complete VCT conversion for sale haha.

I'll probably just do a few bits and pieces on it then, like get the A/C and window working (anyone have a RHR power reg for sale?) and get some export spraypaint onto it to colour code the door handles and fix up the more obvious scratches.

I need to get new rings for one piston and hone the bore on #4, but apart from that I think that is all that needs to be done, as well as a good clean of everything.

I'm going to take my fully sick one of a kind lower control arm to some kents on the southside on the 1st of feb to see if they can cast up a set - the racecar dude I had lined up did nothing with it for 6 months, and then couldn't give me an ETA when I rang him last, so I'm going elsewhere.

Will prob test them on this car since it's actually running haha.

You buggers need to start buying my stuff so I can build the ED!

Put the VCT in this. If you didn't want to you wouldn't have considered it. No karnt is going to want it once you build it so you may as well use it and add a nice touch to your daily :)

WTF ??????? lets see a pic of these hybrid control arms might be able to help with something in that dept.......

good work on the Lane looks the goods and goes nowhere just like every other Lane....lol

Lol hypoeb - The paint is shithouse, it really is. I think at some stage someone has fallen off the road in it too because the drivers side rocker panel is partially caved in and the bottom of the doors is a bit dodge lol. Export spraypaint skills required :)

Schmee - no pics until I have a set in the car for testing, I don't want any kents with more time, more money or better connections than I do to copy the idea and make a set first :) It's really ugly too, the welds etc look like ass, I just made it to figure out the critical dimensions required to put an AU upright and upper control arm into an e-series. Hopefully I've done it right and the car won't end up with 3.74m of front track or 4* positive camber haha.
