twin fans, not cutting in on full till up at top of guage !

Postby rab » March 9th, 2010, 4:24 pm

well, it runs beautiful this new Ef wagon i bought... fans run on low mostly and dont change up to high till its at the letter R which is way high ! doesnt overheat but looks like it has before(crusty dry marks on top of exp bottle ) and is a bit un nerving ... seems to sit about 1/3rd when i left it to idle in the drive for an hour yesterday to check the fans were working....never heard then kick in on full at all in driveway... even wheo air con is on full power, they dont step up .. only when it gets too far up the guage for me ! i reckon they should be on full with AC and maybe 1/2 way would be normal for them to cut in.. rad looks relatively new, bottle cap also looks relatively new although i know for facts that the car has been siting unused for 6-8mths at least.. added new coolant today and checked thermostat which was working perfect ! only seems to climb and very slowly at that, when on the highway or once driving ....
any thoughts ?

ps, thanks for all the previous info on this ! great site for info and tips !

Read the fan diagnostics guide on fordmods and make sure they are entering all 3 modes, sounds like its a relay and the middle mode is not happening for you. ECU will throw a code for this also.

I'm pretty sure all EF / EL's are meant to run at that temperature. Are you sure what its doing is not normal?

Mine gets to R some times, but usually a letter or 2 below it... and if it gets to R the thermo's come on and cool it down.

So does my dads EF.

Was your old car an EA or something? I noticed our old EA, the temperature gauge would never leave low.

it goes all way up to 'O' which is high ! its an ef wagon.. tested them as per fordmods and they come on full when aircon is put to max/boost which is what they are supposed to do but if aircon is low or off, they stay on low till righ tup to the 'O'... must be a sensor as they tell the fan what the temp is and decide when they come on full !

The fordmods guide should have told you which relay will make them come on 'medium' speed - that will be your prob. Everything runs off one temp sensor in an EF so there is no issue there.

And yes, J3's will work very will with LPG!

Ford spent a shitload of money getting the fan system on EFs to keep the engine at the best temp, make it work as per factory. Putting busted ass copper temp sensor wires in the top hose is gay.

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

still doing it and done ford mods tests... all working like it should apparently.. may be run hotter on gas ?? not overheating but still way too hot for what it should get in my opinion... i'll see what i can find out about the individual relays as i just throw on the aircon to max and both fans cut in straight away !
