LUXO_8s daily. 96 EF2 Futura

Postby LUXO_8 » August 19th, 2010, 7:24 pm

With my na getting very tired and my nc off the road and relegated to being a weekender when it gets finished, I've been looking at getting a new daily.
Have looked at a few cars but all have been too expensive. Anyway was at my mums friends place and she was saying she wanted a new car. I asked what she was going to be doing with the EF weather she was going to be trading it or selling privately. To my surprise she said she was going to just put a sign on it stating "free". To that I said I'll have it!! So that was that. I now had the EF

Now that little story is over. A little about the car. It's a white 96 EF 2 Futura on gas with 176,000 km. It's had a steering wheel cover and seat covers on it since 97 when they got it so the interior is almost mint. It needs a little body work but nothing major

Anyway yeh, that's a little about it. Other than cleaning it up a bit i dont really have any plans for it At the most it'll get lowered a little bit and maybe some dark argents but not planning that any time soon

I'll try to get some pics of it up tomorrow or the weekend

im thinking EL Futura caps....i like those

so its got a couple of minor issues...
first one is with the gas..it runs pefectly on gas, but wont change gears...put it on gas and its in first gear....put it on petrol and it instantly changes to 2nd, 3rd, 4th....put it back to gas and its back to first gear only....wierdest thing...lol. anyone have any ideas??!

seccond issue is that the heater core is leaking....might have to bypass it tomorrow so i dont have to keep topping up the coolant, but will probably get kev onto it soonish

anyway heres a couple of dodgy pics....stupid iphone

Very nicee... Just looks a little "boganish" without 'caps or rims lol. Also what is that on the drivers side mirror? looks like electrical/duct tape on there holding the glass on :S

should be looking pretty straight in a few weeks

roady wasnt too bad, gas tank out of date is the worst of it.
needs tank tested
new screen
front indicators
rh guard repeater
headlights polished
mirror
rear link bushes
and a couple of misc globes

only things i wont be able to do is tank and screen so shouldnt be too bad

over the weekend i picked up a set of white EL Fairmont door moulds which are in pretty good nick... will put them on once the new door goes on..

yesterday i took the lights out and today took them into work so i could strip them down and rebuild them.
i repaired the left hand side housing and replaced the right hand side with a better one because of old dodgy repairs to it..then i cleaned the reflectors and refitted them, fitted the proper futura chrome inserts, washed the lenses and fitted them..
i then sanded them back with 600 wet/dry paper, 1200 wet/dry paper, then buffed them with paint cutters then a fine silicone free paint polish....
the results speak for themselves...and importantly i can now see where i am going at night lol

Image
these pics dont show just how yellow and deteriorated the lenses were...

Image
after being rebuilt.... the light on the right of picture has been sanded and polished, the light on the left hasnt been sanded or polished yet

Image
both lights polished...they almost look like new ones

How long did it approximately take you to sand them and polish them?

Re: LUXO_8s new daily. 96 EF2 Futura

Postby LUXO_8 » August 23rd, 2010, 10:53 pm

cheers ash... they really lift the car's appearance too.... might get to take some pics with an actual camera on the weekend lol

if you're just polishing them they dont take that long to do, half an hour each tops... i fully stripped those and used parts from other lights to make them up though so it took a bit longer./....hour and a half to 2 hours
i have an electric sander i use with the sheets of wet/dry paper and a large car paint buffer to polish them with so it makes it a lot easier.
its more a skill to get them to look perfect though

defiantly is a roadworthy issue and for good reason, the other night when it was raining i literally could not see where i was going....low beam was like parkers, high beam was barely like low beam should be

now they light up the road perfectly.....just need to adjust them properly

i knew they would fail them before i even took it in but i like to get roadworthies done on cars as they are.....rather than fix obvious things and have the inspector look extra hard for things to fault

bypassed the heater core today because it started leaking into the car friday.... who's idea was it to have to do heater pipes from under the car....i want to bash them..... laying in a massive puddle of coolant sucked !!

ah well, at least that job is now done - will get the heater core replaced after its roadworthy....
went and used the carpet shampooerer at the carwash and gave the carpet a wash to remove the coolant....will do it again in a couple of days to make sure its good

also grabbed some hubcaps for it today too....i think they're EF2 GLI, but not sure....oh well, will do till i get either tuffcaps or EL futura caps.

waiting for ronza to come with my panels and to take the other 2 fairlanes away. have lined up a mate thats a panel beater to fit up the guards, door and rear bar for me....including swapping power windows and shit.... at least the panel gaps will be done right..(lol @ worrying about panel gaps on a daily....)
