Useless Poll #2: Second favourite exhaust note

Postby Bipolar » December 11th, 2007, 12:01 am

I have done this pre-boostedfalcon.net, but kents had trouble deciphering the choices, so I thought I'd make it easier. I got inspiration from the Top Gear episode when James had the theme music played in exhaust notes and I finally got to hear an I8. I've picked what I think would be the more obvious choices out of the 11ty billion engines in existance.

Post about how much you hate or love any of the below notes:

Single
I2, I3, I4, I5, I6, I8, I9, I10, I12, I14
V2, V4, V5, V6, V8, V10, V12, V16, V20, V24
F2, F4, F6, F8, F10, F12, F16
W8, W12, W16, W18
1 rotor, 2 rotor, 3 rotor

I'm only including piston and rotary engines. I haven't included any of the configurations not used in modern road vehicles (that I know about) like the radial, X, U, H, square or opposed.

Rotary all the way.
They sound awesome, wether it be 12A, 13B, 20B, and the new Renesis rotary in the RX-8. All of them sound great.
And there is something special about an engine that spins to 8000 rpm and develops power the whole way up!

PS My dream car is a JC Mazda Cosmo. Twin Turbo 20B FTW!

Second choice: Turbo I6 with screamer pipe, at full boost of course.

I am so over the sound of a V8, it's all you hear on the Powercruise DVD, although now they're starting to recognise the turbo 6's as Gup get's owned by a R32 GTR on the DVD fron this year.
Sorry if I offend any V8 lovers here but V8's just sound dated and simple(without technological advance), to me.

There is nothing like a turbo 6 with an external gate venting to atmosphere, at full noise!

BRM V16 for me :P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McYaA4b2 ... re=related

I have a CD one of my uncles burnt me a copy of called "Sounds of Goodwood". Basically a discussion about all these classic cars and recordings of them from inside the cabin and trackside as they go flying past. The BRM just sounds so brutal.

The Essex V6, i still get chills remembering the sound my old Capri used to make at 8000rpm through a 2 1/4 twin system with a 464cfm 4 barrel holley and alot of head work. It just has an unreal note, words just cannot describe it.

Well, I swing both ways (no Bipolar... not *that* way), I love the sound of a tough old RX2/3/4(?) on-song, and I like the later RX7s & the RX8, but early 80s RX7s with a cannon sound like a swarm of blowies in a tin bucket.

I agree with you there Commando. A properly done 12A, 13B sounds nucking futs.
Its kinda the same with any motor though. Anyone can **** up any exhaust note big time. Cannons, being 2" to big the whole way through, etc.
