So I'm 17, living in Vic. My old man lives up north in Darwin. I've had my learners since my 16th birthday.
So I'm going to see my dad these school holidays, would it be possible for me to get my Ps up there? I know you only have to be 17, and it's not hard to say I live with him there. Would there be anything stopping me?

you first need to prove you live there so you would want to get your bank accounts and others posted there. Law requires you be there for 3 months before you can change it over. I know with licence's and car reg it different its you only have up 2 3 months. Your licence would be valid down here if on holiday, but if it's proved you live down here then you would be charged with unlicenced driving. Honestly i recommend you wait as for the trouble and you can get in and also have to go to its not really worth it. All that will happen is you will suddenly be everyone's best friend that wants you to drive them around

You can just get a proof of residency form - your old man signs it stating you've lived with him since X day. Dont have to worry about transferring bank accounts/3 mths etc.
Its a fair stretch for them to prove you dont live in vic, but if you get pulled up enough and your only excuse is i'm down here visiting my mum, they may catch on after a while and try to do something about it...... but theres not a whole lot they can do.
Sounds like it might be more effort than its worth though.

edit - why cant you just get your Ps in vic? How long do you need to hold your Ls?

12 months and 120 hours log booked drivng time if under 18. So he should be fine, sounds like teenage impatience to me. If he has his car reg'd down here whilst driving it on a NT licence i don't think the filth will take that long to work it out. And they would put pressure on the lad for a certainty. I still will say just wait young fella i know it feels like the day you drive will never come but it will lose it's appeal very quickly.

This is pretty much it. I turn 18 in December, so that's all good, but I lost my log book so now I only have like 60 hours in it. Won't be hard to write some up though.
But yeah, my car's registered in Vic, and it's big and loud so the cops will pull me over all the time. Sounds like it's not worth it really.

good boy, just make sure you keep it fairly rwc, good rear tyres especially. Last thing you want is to have the police putting your ride off the road all the time. And dont be a smart ass to them as you may come accross one that will haunt you for the next ten yrs like i have. And after 27 defects and 42,000 in fines several losses of licence (6 points for drive a car after defect expired) 6 months jail (drive whilst suspended) it shows no matter what they always win. I hope someone learns from this as well as myself.

Haha, I've never been in any trouble before, and the coppers aren't bad blokes here sometimes. But yeah, good rear tyres is something that I've been told to make sure of, so I'll be doing that.
