cabinet makes/various tradies travel allowence

Postby josh_ef » November 21st, 2010, 9:40 pm

just want to get some other peoples advice or opnions on how travel allowence works in victoria what i can claim, what im entitled to and what my boss has to pay me

since getting my license back im doing alot of on site work, driving from the factory to various jobs for installing work and using my own car, other days i drive directly from home to the site

one guy at work said something like im entitled to 75 cents per kilometer, is that ontop of my hourly wage?

e.g i drive to work (ovously dont get paid for that) clock on at 7:30 am, drive 1 hour to a job site wich is 100 kms away do i get 1 hours pay plus the cents per kilometre?

tried googling a cabinet making award or something couldnt seem to find it, not sure if any other tradies on here know.

Holy crap. 75 cents per k seems VERY high to me. For my catering I get 30c per k. even that works out far more than fuel costs. It should though as they have to cover you for general wear and tare as well.

Also I doubt ud get kms + hourly wage, that would mean that ur boss is paying you $150 just to drive to and from a work site plus 2 hours wage, Thats like 3 full tanks of premium petrol. Either you have one hell of a sweet deal there or your boss is an idiot!

I don't think your employer has to pay you anything. Ask him to reimburse your travel costs and see what they say.

You would be able to claim the costs with your tax return though. Keep receipts. There are a few different methods for claiming kms and car use. One of them is a cents per km type of deal but there are others too.

i dare say if you go to work. then they want you to go out to a job. you have every right to either take a company car or be paid for petrol/ wear and tare on your vehicle.

but dans right. you can claim it on tax as well. so keep track of what km's you do.

yeah i;ve got a log book,

the other installer takes the work van with the companys tools

before we had the van apparently he just puts down on his pay slip how many kms he travelled for the week and they have a system with the payroll and he gets paid for it

i thought 75 cents seemed to high but yeah putting wear and tear on my car for work, i might have to drive to fkn bendigo, not excatly a short trip

ill find out how it works tommorow

there are different rates depending on the car's capacity.
i think the highest bracket is 70-75c per km.

If you drive directly to the job site, you can't claim that.
if you drive to work, clock on, then to the job site, you can claim from work to job site.

depending on your work, you can claim through your employer or through tax.

in the rare case that i need to drive somewhere for my work, its deffinately 70c per km or there abouts.

wish i could do more of it!
works out faily heavily in your favour if your car is on LPG and you service it yourself :D

wow that is obsenly high for just driving. I mean, you could make a decent living of just your kms if you were driving a few hours a day. Like you would be getting more than a taxi driver, courier, bus driver probably even a limo driver. Assuming your doing freeway driving that is. If all your work is done within a tight range in the inner city suburbs then you deserve it because driving and parking there is crap.

spot on john, 2.6 litre and above is 75 cents per kilometre,

today i drove to the factory clocked on at 7, loaded me car up with tools n shit, waited for the apprentice to come in at 7:30, drove 28 kms to jobsite in betly, worked till 4, drive back to the factory another 28 kms at 4:30 clocked off

so i get 56kms paid at 75 cents per k plus time for driving there, pretty sweet deal

i should be swapping cars with me mrs 6 on gas, still 75 cents and it would only be costing like 5 bucks a day

lpg ftw

For anyone who's interested here is the list of reimbursment rates.
http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/ ... ment+rates
They catagorise cars according to engine size. My 1.6 laser comes under light but if i wack 1.8 badges it goes up to small.

I must say that they are ridiculous. $1.19 per km for a patrol or land cruiser? No body is paying that much. If I had to drive to phillip island and back for example thats $240 in 'vehicle reimbursement'. Even as an employee I find all those rates stupendously high.

Hey mate.....how many litres is your car? If it's 4L then you will def be eligible for 75 cents per km. You can only claim the kz u do from you work to your site and back home. you cant claim kz from your primary place of work to your home or vice versa.
You can ask your boss for an allowance and if he says yes, you add the allowance you get from him under "allowances" in the income section of the tax return and claim it as a deduction under "Motor Vehicle expenses" so it cancels itself out.
Id push for an allowance because u get a full amount returned to ya. If you didnt get an allowance and you just claim it as a deduction, then you only get 30 cents in every dollar back (if you are in the thirty cent tax bracket).

I'm sure that not every employer would use those prices. I work for the Australian arm of a huge American company and while i havn't had the chance to drive my car for work purposes yet, my supervisor does regulary and he gets paid according to those prices.

Ill be able to claim it back on tax :)

Im wishing I had the EL now, or at least a car on gas, id still get the same amount.

The girl who had my position the last 2 years got the allowance, she drives a little Proton, spent $30 a week on petrol and pocketed over $200 a week.

ill be claiming driving to work sites on tax as well as mobile phone use thanks to the party hire company i work for now lol
but they also have a fuel card system, so if we actually do use our cars for transport to a job site, we can ask to top up the tank.

i think paying a price per km is a bit excessive lol, but if you can get it, good on you!

It's also supposed to pay for the extra insurance costs in driving your car around, as it should be insured for "some" business use.

If you had an accident going between job sites and then told the insurance company that, they could deny your claim, as you are no longer travelling under the private use policy.

Also wouldn't cover any of your tools, boss' tools or any customers goods either if something happened.

You could obviously lie if something happened, but most insurance companies would work it out in 5 mins by asking a few questions.

The 75c/km seems like a bit of cash first off, but if you use it properly it doesn't go really far.

Add about 300-400$ ontop of your policy (well was for mine).

We charge out travel at $1.39c per KM to our clients and they pay it.

Payment for travel is also dependent on your Award, AWA, Contract with your employer. 75c per KM is the average for a Falcon.
