Intercoolers :)

Postby TWR40T » March 11th, 2011, 12:57 pm

Ok ive been looking through build threads and things like that and ive noticed a few big powered cars have expensive intercoolers...

I read an article in zoom magazine a while back with one of the editors R32 GTR which has some decent power...now it had some nippy chow wow japanese cooler on it then they put a just jap intercooler on it and the power figure dropped by a couple of kw at the wheels.

I just wanna see what peoples experiences are with there intercoolers wether its an expensive one or not. :D

IVe had a crappy ebay one twice and i had one custome made by Race Raidiiators . The difference between the two was massive the custom was better. I think in my case it was almost 7-10 kw

a crappy cooler will be fine for low boost street car... if you race it or run bigger boost you would need a better cooler for more efficient cooling and a more long term cooling solution(ie circuit racing etc)

are we talking a cooler for 200rwkw or 600rwkw?

Cooler is needed for back to back runs. Shit ass cooler will still run higher temps then a good one which will decrease your power every time you go for a run without a decent cool down period.

Go back to back runs on a dyno and you will see if power is roughly the same, or if it drops 15+rwkw on the next run

its like everything, cost vs benefit.
is the $600 more expensive intercooler worth the extra throttle responce/10kw

some will say no, others will say yes

Also driving for long periods of time a average intercooler will suffer from heat soak compared to a more expensive/better designed cooler

it wasn't just a nippy chow wow cooler, it was a massive Trust tube/fin drag cooler, and then he put a smaller street AVO bar/plate cooler on it. Julian Edgar (the editor) also explained why it dropped power.

I've got a plazmaman one. I haven't really pushed it hard but temps seem to stay around 30 degrees when thrashing.

i run a 1000hp plazmaman kit on my car too. 350+rwkw back to back on dyno's, down at calder etc. all is good with abck to back same power runs. plazmaman is some good shit. Not too expensive either.
