So much talk about detailing, in a thread about a car that will probably never get detailed in it’s life! I appreciated the info, and now know where to go, but as I said this car is a daily that lives outside 24/7. The day this car makes over 200 wasps at the treads, is the day I consider making it look better!

i reckon an AU 5 speed XR8 with 200rwkw would make for a decent daily.
enough punch without being all over the road, and with decent suspension would tackle the corners pretty well too.

Thanks John, it does do its job pretty well. The handling is great, but not spectacular. The tyres are letting it down at the moment, and it could do with a pair of stiffer sway bars. The brakes work well, but I still sometimes forget how much extra weight there is up front over the 6’s!
It’s because I just don’t have enough money to burn as others, which is why things happen a lot slower. I do still want to boost it, especially seeing how well a few other Windsor machines have responded!
Anyway, I don’t need to justify myself. I do what I do, and that’s it. I have a cry about my cars, but I do also enjoy the response it gets!

So, update, the XR8 now has 3 inches!! Got my new Ballistic 3" metal cats and custom twin 2.5" into single 3" exhaust fitted yesterday, and it sounds mint!! Probably could be louder, but still sounds much deeper than it used to. It feels like it goes a little better too, but that might just be me!

Doing the service today too, so that will help. Was thinking about getting a tune, but might not bother till I get a blower. Oh, and for those who care, here is a scan of the dyno sheet from Hallam.

Yeah, a definite sweet spot for power - enough to have fun without breaking stuff (or the law!). Aside from their looks, I quite like how AU's drive so this one should be a bit of fun now with the Kaaz, decent suspension and the 330mm brake option.

The AU's are a very great car to drive, which is probably why I am on to my fourth one!! :lol:

As for the power, despite only having a mighty 2rwkw over my first AU I6, I think it's the extra torque that makes it. The only thing stopping it from being perfect is the epic axle tramp! I'm thinking I might just have to get a set of bigger sway bars after all. I was also told that it could be the KAAZ locking up causing the tramp, but that doesn't sound right to me.

Anyway, that's about it for this thing. Appart from a custom tune, there is not really anything else I can do without starting down another expensive path! I guess all there is to do now is save my pennies for some boost! :grin:

Oh, and I'm hoping you are not right again there Justin with the selling! Although at this point there are only three cars that will get me out of this thing. A VZ HSV Clubsport 6L manual, a FG XR6-T ZF auto or a G6E-T. If any one of those came up at a good price, I would be very tempted!

My lokka used to tramp bad in the wet. It stopped when I put an LSD in.

Nah man, in the dry as well. Obviously it is worse in the wet though. Even in the dry, if I go to slide it at anything less than full pelt, the arse just jumps around! Maybe it is what happens with a locking diff.

It only seems to do it at the track on launch now, otherwise it wheelspins cleanly all the time.

It was a 4wd systems lokka, not a spool. The lokka didnt tramp in the dry which I thought was odd. In the wet it was bad.

How much do you reckon? It's actually about 20kg, plus the V8 sits lower and further back than the I6. Alloy heads onto a Windsor would make it lighter than an I6.

Is this while at speed? For instance coming through a big roundabout in the dry, you get near the end and give it a bit to hang the back out, and even then it'll axle tramp?

Ev, I have a feeling it's a spring or shock issue. Mine now tramps since changing from the original springs and shocks. It did it with the Lokka, and now with the LSD I have in it.

Pfft, I do not have the skill nore the testicular fortitude to pull of any such maneuver at speed! It only seems to happen when I am stationary and dump the clutch to kick around a corner or a u-turn, P plate stylez! :banghead:

I have never been able to get it to spin the wheels at anything faster than 10-15km/h in first in the wet, and yes it does tramp then too. Yet it cuts hoops in the dry with ease, even in 2nd gear!! Tore up a set of tyres in like 5 minutes, was great fun!

I bloody hope its not the springs and shocks, they are brand new Pedders sports rider!

Just for a reference, my AU has pedders setup, a tight LSD, big swaybars and I dont get tramp. You can dump the clutch in any gear in the wet and its smoooth sideways.. (Top gear skids at 100km = win!) :-P

Dry it just feels weird. Clutch might be having a holiday, but it still spins pretty well!

Well, the only thing really different between mine and yours is the sway bars and you have more power. So I guess sway bars will be the next mod then.

Might have to wait a while now though, as it looks like my gear box is starting to give up. :cry:

It's all of a sudden become ridiculously hard to get into first and second gears. When standing still, I have to release and re-engage the clutch two or three times to get it into first. Same with reverse, but that has been the case from the start. I bloody hope its ok, cos I haven’t exactly budgeted for a new gear box right now! :banghead:

The oil in the gear box was changed earlier this year when I did the clutch, so it's only 3 months old at the most. I'm going to take it back to the guys who did that and my diff to get them to have a look.

Yeah, the tyres are really terrible, so I know they aren't helping. I don't remember it being this bad in my first AU, although that was live rear though.

Sounds like it could be a clutch issue, is it hydralic on those bad boys? if not the cable might need adjusting.

Lol @ top gear skids in the wet! Must have some crappy tyres to do that!
Swaybars will make the car drift easier.. especially in the wet. So if you can't slide very much atm you'll soon learn ;-)

Theyre Dunlop SP3000s. Seem pretty plasticky, but the fronts stick like glue. I've only got 200rwkw.

Cable clutch, and a brand new cable went in with the new clutch at the same time earlier this year. Shit, I hope that is all it is! Oh, and I had Dunlops on the back of this thing one night, and was cutting hoops in second! They smoked like a mad man, even with my measly 150rwkw!

Danny, no they didn't mate. Probably because I wen't to Josh's driveway to get them fitted!

Hooray for simple fixes!! Had a crack at the clutch cable myself last night, after having to take off in second all the way home from work. Managed to adjust it enough that I can now get it into gear again! There is too much other crap in the way to get a spanner in there, so could only do it by hand. Hopefully it lasts till next week when I can take it to the gearbox guys to have a proper look.

Boo for expensive fixes! Turned out it was the pedal box all along; the clutch cable adjustment was only a band aid. The thing was cracked wide open, so had it replaced yesterday with a brand new reinforced unit. Shifts like new again, much nicer to drive!
Despite that though, this thing is still for sale. I have been looking at a few BF XR6 Turbo ZF auto’s lately, and they are pretty nice. I know I will miss manual, but boost should make up for it! Figured it’s a better road to take, than another failed attempt at boosting a car myself.

An auto will make for a better daily drive to work. Yes the turbo is scary powerful, but I guess I will just have to control myself and learn how to drive. I doubt I will ever use its full potential, but it will be nice knowing the power is there.

You contemplate boosting your AU which will make more power than a stock turbo, yet you don't think you'll ever use the power of a stock XR6T?! My head hurts! Lol.

When you get an XR6T make sure you get plazmaman cooler piping... so i can buy it off you when you part it out and sell it! :grin:

Shit, that would be fair awesome! But then, thats what, $5k for a kit and tune? Then my T5 will be hating life, so I'd need a TKO which is another $4k or so. Where as selling this plus that gets me a BF-T. I guess the decision will only be made if the right buyer comes along. The fact that the car is for sale will not detract from how I treat it though. Unless I do something really stupid and go and get a BF before its sold! :banghead:

Stick with the xr6t idea.

Spending another $5-$8k modding your own car is a shit idea when an xr6t and a flash tune will make you happy.

You should now by now that modding an old car isn't your thing. Everyone else does. :-p
