Victoria: 32 new speed and red light cameras

Postby Troutman » October 4th, 2011, 8:32 am

The Victorian Government today announced that 32 new speed and red light cameras will be switched on gradually over the coming weeks and months.

The first eight of the speed and red light cameras will be switched on from tomorrow.

Victorian Police Minister, Peter Ryan, said that the decision was made to switch the cameras on (which were installed, but not activated by the previous government) following a favourable Auditor-General report. The report released by Victoria’s Auditor-General claimed that speed cameras (fixed and mobile) were not primarily used to raise revenue in Victoria.

I'm all for the red light cameras.
Ban low performance drivers, not high performance cars.

Just for a touch or irony, also in the news:

The United Kingdom is set to raise its highway speed limit from 70 to 80mph (110-130km/h).

The British government announced this week that it would: "Consult on raising the national speed limit on motorways". It intends to launch a full public consultation of the move later in 2012 with a view to implementing changes in early 2013.

In an official release from the UK Department of Transport, Transport Secretary Philip Hammond stated: "I want to make sure that our motorway speed limit reflects the reality of modern vehicles and driving conditions, not those of 50 years ago.

"While we must ensure that our roads remain among the safest in the world, we must also consider the huge economic benefits that can be created by shortening journey times," Hammond opined.

The Department of Transport's release reads thus: "Vehicles have changed dramatically since the current national speed limit was set in 1965. Technological advances mean that cars are significantly safer than they were -- contributing to a fall of more than 75 per cent in the number of people killed on British roads since 1965. That is why the Government feels it is now time to look again at whether the speed limit set in 1965 is still appropriate."

Though the Department states road safety is a ‘top priority’ for the UK Government, it also says: "Safety cannot be the only consideration when setting speed limits."

yeah but red light cameras are just a crock, there not there for the odd tosser, that just winngs it, there, for bloke who see's it realizes wing it through the orange, or hope my brakes will pull me up, mainly set on substantial downhill runs that require more braking.
I had one I saw the camera the light went orange, so I jumped on the brakes sailing into the middle of the intersection, there was just not enough time, and I should just driven like normal through it, but parranoia of those things gets you, I admit I reckon continuing at the current speed, I would of gonethrough tailing the red, du to a heavy laiden 4wd, **** you can't say there not a coincidence there all set on massive hills that any car will have trouble braking on for no reason.
I must of been lucky because no fine, but I thought I was fucked.

I admit I mainly feel sorry for truck drivers.
callinin sick, callin in twisted, they insisted.
**** that that I call in drunk and stoned.
beats passing out at work.

Maybe citylink will consider raising its speed limit from 80 km/h to 100 km/h on the monash. After all if you are to drive in the right hand lane you would think its 100 anyway.

I feel so safe driving around now that there's even more speed/redlight cameras.. :glare:

They'll never raise the speed limit here with the 'speed kills' additude... we need some sort of mass strike/fight back against the government, which will never happen!

There was a article in last weeks Herald sun about these cameras,.
The one fact that i thought was funny that there are more accidents at these intersections now they got cameras then was in the first place.
Most of which were rear endings due to people jumping on the brakes so hard.

if the govt was serious, they would use satellites to track all our speeds and fine us from there. (one day it will be like this) Just like GPSs show our speeds.

They arent going to bring that in because thats political suicide. Not to mention against privacy laws.

Imagine the press release on 'the government will now know where your car is 24/7 anywhere in the world'.

Don't quote me on this but I think the 80 zone is to reduce sound not for safety.

No one alive today will see speed limits increased.

Oh really? I guess that makes sense. I was always baffeled because they redesigned that entire bit of freeway then left the speed at 80. Meanwhile england considers upping their motorways to 130. Im aware they are not equal roads but 50 km/h is a huge difference.

Melbourne needs a serious commuting overhaul though, after one day driving in peak hour im ready to neck myself. I dont know how people can possibly do it for years on end.
