To sell.. or keep..?Mint EB XR6

Postby Ef_frmnt » February 3rd, 2008, 9:24 pm

I have a small dilemna at the moment.. ive got an EB XR6 in my shed just sitting there under a car cover. Now this car isnt your every day ex-taxi, its Cobalt blue its done 98,XXXks since new, 5sp manual, momo wheel, been one owner before myself and looks like it just drove out of the showroom. Infact it still has the original ford dealers stock number/sticker on the windscreen (although the screen is cracked :( :( :( ) The paint in the doorjambs and boot is perfect, along with the extrerior paint, it has no scratches no dints and is pretty much perfect apart from the hoodlining sagging a bit and rear window tint bubbling.

Recently australian muscle car magazine named the EB XR6 was named as one of the top ten collectable australian muscle (? muscle?) cars under $30,000. As i dont drive the car and only take it out once in a while to keep it clean and running in perfect condition, so im thinking maybe i should get rid of it, but then if its bound to become a collectors item should i keep it? There is an EB XR6 on ebay for 4,500 thats auto and has 144 thou on the clock, the only thing about the car thats special is the sunroof. So at the moment im thinkin about fixing the very few little problems with the car and putting it on the market for around $6,000.

What do you guys think it would be worth... and should i sell or keep it in the shed in prime condition for another 5 years?

IMO all depends on your financial situation... if you have no special bond to it (lol) and need the money for upgrading your main ride, school fees, hospital etc etc then i would sell, if its just a matter of extra cash for something fun then i'd keep, especially if the value is rising.. but then again i dno how it is such a collectors item, maybe the sprints and svo are but yeh... siiting on the fence only gives you splinters.

Keep it. I would love to pick up a SVO, EB XR6, or a Sprint and keep in in my garage but I don't have the money. I would love to own one and just keep it dead stock and in mint condition. You're lucky.

Well there is no urgent need to sell.. i have two other cars at the moment and while i would like to finish my never-ending turbo project im in no hurry. I'll get some pics up when i find my usb cable.. but pictures dont do this car justice at all. The only reason why im leaning towards selling is my old man wants to sell his place and its in his shed.. if he sells...after that i have no place to keep it undercover and it would deteriorate sitting outdoors.

I dont really have a special bond with the car.. ive not done any work to it so theres no feeling of blood sweat and tears gone into it. I basically bought it because i couldnt help myself it was too good condition to let pass.

I'll put it out there that an EB XR6 will never be a collectors item as such.
It's probably gotten about as cheap as it ever will, but I don't think you are going to see them go for 20k at any time in the future. Evah.

It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. That said, I would NEVER pay $15k+ for an EB XR6. I wouldn't even pay $6k. You would probably find someone who would pay $6k easily if it's in top nick and you put it on carsales.com.

I don't think the EB XR6 is ever gonna be a collectors item. Sell it and put the money towards something better.

I know most people on here wouldnt take a saecond look.. and car values differ between forums and the real world. I will probably end up selling it in the near future because as has been said and i agree with, its not going to be worth huge dollars anytime soon so i cant see the short term value in keeping it. That being said if i dont get the right money then it will stay and hopefully appreciate in value, eventually some nutty car collector will want the missing link in his collection and pick it up regardless of price. maybe

so imagine how much the nutty collector will pay for it in 20 years.... but could you be bothered holding it for that long is the question... otherwise sell. IMO.

EVERYBODY I've spoken to that grew up in the 70s said they never thought the old GTs and Cobras would be worth anything because they were everywhere and not expensive. Now they're spewing they didn't keep one of them garaged. And most of them have said if you get any hint of a Falcon being worth something in the future, hang on to it.

XR6s are more like 90s Chargers (apologies for possible DRHEMI correlations here!), they'll be rock-bottom for years to come and then suddenly jump in value when people realise that A) there aren't many left, and B) "hey my Dad had one when I was a little kent, so they're cool :)"

Mind you I like XR6s!

LOL nommic, I like your thinking.

I'd give you 5k, absolutely no more.

And a collector's item? I highly doubt it. Look at the Sprint and even then you can pick up neat ones for $12k and they're much more desirable.

Sounds like there will be a vicious cockfight between OED666, 89AIT and me for that car - EB XRs are the fken shiznt.

I only hope that when you decide to sell it that I'm in the financial position to buy it! I reckon hang on to it for as long as you can.

Hi,

I dont think it will turn into a collectors car, but you should keep it because who is gonna give you a mint condition XR6 for $6000 with basically the same running gear and performance as a AU3 XR6? If you want to buy a mint condition car, you gotta pay a little more but sometimes they just dont exist. I had a mint EB GL 5.0. Bought it brand new, had 62,000km when i sold it two years ago for $8000. I spent some money on this car, (computer, heads, cam, porting, exhaust, suspension, diff gears) it was immaculate.

Anyhow $8000 is not a great deal of money for a mint car. If you car is mint, keep it and enjoy it for for its collectibility (questionable) but for its driving enjoyment.

I know of a mint EB XR8 for sale. 80,000km and about $8000, 5 speed. Ive driven it.
