G'day all,

Even though it was covered in the Lounge, there's some decent photos now so thanks to the BoostedFalcon stand at AFD so I might as well get the official thread rolling.

1998 Ford Crown Victoria P71. 4.6 litre SOHC Modular V8, 4 speed auto. Served law enforcement duties somewhere in Indiana, and has been in Australia since 2007. Possibly the only one in Victoria. Includes lights, strobes, siren, speed detector, radio, computer and not-yet-installed dash cam.

Will aim to get some proper interior and under bonnet pics soon. And cheers to Mr Wilson for the AFD invite, which turned out to be a real success.

What size are the wheels/tyres? just realised they look monstrous compared to the AU 16's.

I didn't get around to asking about the AU, but the FG is a very rare current model XR6 Turbo. The officer told me they ask for more but are told they have to drive the Commodores they are given.

The P71 has 16" wheels, though hard to tell due to the colour. The Chevrolet Caprice PPV by comparison has 18" wheels in the same style.

Which 4.6 is in this ? what power does it make ?
*edit :- wiki is your friend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Crown_Victoria_Police_Interceptor

Have you driven this much at all ?

Interior

The front seats have a steel "stab plate" built into the back so that a suspect being transported in the back seat cannot stab the officers in the front seat with a knife or other sharp object

Does yours have these too ?

Cheers guys. :)

MMD, I was talking with Wayne and Damo, and the power figure is pretty much identical to the late model EL XR8 and early AU XR8 of the same period of time. However, it didn't really increase much over the following years which is why it's not even close to the performance of the Caprice PPV. I've not driven it much as it's a bit tricky to do so legally, but in future I will figure something out so I don't have to tow it. I didn't know about the ''stab plate" but most of these cars had a partition behind the back seats. Mine still has the screw-holes in the B pillar where it used to be.

G'day Ash, would have been great to catch up. Maybe next time, as I'm planning on hanging around a lot more. I'm not sure exactly how much is original, but I'm pretty sure there were no strobe lights in '98, and the roof lights are a late model item too. But overall it's certainly the real deal. Less than 100,000 miles too (Kilometres? What's that?).

It's been a very interesting experience. It wasn't exactly the reason I bought it (I was a huge fan of many cop shows as a kid including NYPD Blue, Law & Order, the X Files and others so it's more of a childhood dream) but the amount of attention the car generally receives can be likened to that of a celebrity. Some people come out of their houses and stop on the streets, people take candid photos, people laugh and talk about old movies.

And for all that, some of the comments from the Crown Vic forums include:
"Whats the other car?"
"other car looks like a holden of some sort"
"The other car is a Holden Caprice, which is awesome I might add :D"
"Love the Holden"

I'm still trying to figure out the moral of the story. :D
Cheers guys.

haha, ah the memories. Getting pwned by FF moderators for not closing the thread etc. I wonder how gmanEA is going. Maybe he has a now Crown Vic too.

Cheers Wayne. I've been watching a lot of John Bunnell vids myself. If it wasn't for him during high school days I might not be so into these cars today. What a genius.

Re: 1998 Ford Crown Victoria

Postby Troutman » June 23rd, 2012, 11:11 pm

There's a bit of jealous interest in the FG XR6 Turbo in the US, so it was cool getting that pic at AFD. Though one guy the other day said he loves AUs. Only real enthusiasts would even bother reading about a car that isn't even engineered for LHD. A damn shame as it would be good to have as an alternative to the "one trick pony" Mustang.

Anyway, some good news. I have added a new video of when my friend had the idea of displaying the panther for some youngsters. Enjoy!
