What would be the most expensive repair for an E-Series?

Postby AaronEF8 » March 10th, 2012, 10:36 am

Hey guys,
reading the paper and a couple forums this morning got me thinking, what would be the most expensive thing that could go wrong with an e-series nowdays? Excluding crashes.

Like, are there many parts that are only available from Ford, that can't be substituted, and are hard to find second hand?

V8 stuff that's Falcon specific is expensive/hard to find, but you can generally substitute Mustang parts, or make generic water hoses fit easily. Apart from that, I can't think of anything overly expensive, especially when you look at other cars. Jared (I think) with his 5 Series BMW, and the 7k gearbox rebuild comes to mind, as does air con compressors on Commodores.

I guess being able to buy a complete car for $500 means parts are ultra cheap :P

I'd say getting a legit roady would be right up there with the likes of a ground up rebuild in terms of price and effort lol

5 Litre specific bits, and XR front panels. Finding good leather trim is difficult now too.

From memory the DL LTD T-bar handle was expensive too. But not exactly a routine repair.

The key is not paying a mechanic hundreds or even thousands to do every job that comes up. It can work out cheaper to buy a much newer car on a loan in that case. Though it wouldn't have that E Series coolness factor.

I think you answered your own question Aaron...when you can buy a complete car for $500 - lets say $1000 for something like Ronza's NL Fairlane :P then you have most the bits you need!

Comes down to how keen you are to repair what lump of ES broken-ness you have compared to just buying a bit from a wrecker - ie decent condition T-bar handles out of EF / EL Ghias are $$$...then to find one in decent nick *grrr*.

Interiors are getting pretty ratty these days - good nick leather is hard to find that isn't heavily worn / torn. Anything mechanical just seems to get rebuilt (as you'd expect) - ie diffs, trans, motors and exterior stuff are a dime a dozen...just gotta spend to get it nice / sprayed the right colour. Chrome inserts in door mouldings and bumpers are hard to get, although I know Autobarn do similar replacement stuff for most door mouldings - front / rear bumpers not too sure though?

Leaves me to the question, how many unplayed with mint examples of any ES are there getting around today? :P

If you pay $500 for the E series like everyone else you can triple your money. 300% E series profit > 126% maloo profit > 110% F6 profit.

^^^ Yep, hardly anything available interior wise (other than Concorde steering wheels which everyone naturally sells as EL GT)...once upon a time (~10 years ago) I did know where EL GT seats and door trims were - guy wanted ~$2500 for them. Looking back, it might have been worthwhile now :(

FBT seats would be worth more than EL GT I reckon. Good condition FBT steering wheels are as rare as hens teeth and I've seen them hit $1000+ for a decent second hand one.
