Hey guys i wanna get stuck into painting my rims this long weekend. Want to go matt/satin black like pic below

Image

After some advice ive never tackled painting rims myself, ive got the paint side sorted i think. Just using cans. But its more the prep the rims have a fair bit of gutter rash, is there any sort of "body type filler" that can be used on rims?? and just maybe some grades of sandpaper to prep em as they have been painted before and the paint is pretty thick on them.

Cheers in advance any help would be great.

PS rims are worth about 100 bucks off ebay so i got no interest in sending em away to get painted

some paint stripper, so you don't have to sand all those layers off. then sand smooth. prime and paint.

i know you don't want it low, but it would look tuff .

thats not a bad idea messy tho. still you will have to do some filling after you strip them unless you just grind out your rash and scuffs but then your just going to have low spots all over the place. i know its just a rim but id just leave the og paint fill the low spots, primer then paint. saves buying paint stripper and the extra hours. and id do it with a gun also

but i understand u dont have all the gear man.

just my opinion anyways

justa6 im getting 1" lowering block wont be dumped but the back wont look as jacked. mmm paint stripper is an idea.

Pat i wouldnt strip em either prob its just the last layer of paint some newb like me painted and its sooo thick so i thought some sort of sand would be good?

What sort of filler would you use on rims?

Yer i know itd come out mint from the gun but i figured the matt black look wouldnt be too bad from cans... my mate touched up his bf gt rims with the same paint cans suprisingly came up alright. In the end its not a show car i guess.

i use regular body filler or fine filler, you just have to be sure you rub the area that your going to fill efficiently. then seal it with primer.

if you got some gutter rash max you could hit the edges with a metal file. will take most of it out unless they are reall deep. also try not to use to much filler on your rim edges. dont want it to all chip off next time some retard changes your tyres.

Mmm this filing idea sounds like a winner i was just thinking im bound to **** up this filling business haha... might file the shit out of them and anything that doesnt come out just paint over it haha will be matt black cant be that easy to see once its all filed and painted haha.

Cheers for all the advice boys will let ya know how i go.

Well i had the day off tues and decided to get off my bum and paint 2 of the 18s black.

Turned out pretty good i think, the 2 i painted had bugger all gutter rash so i didnt fill anything basically just wet and dry sanded 3 coats of primer high fill and 3 top coats and here is the result.

Thanks John Z for helping as always. The big test will be to see if they peel or anything like that or chip real easy i hope not, but time will tell. Hard to tell but the silver wheels were so farked so even paint wise looks heaps better i think

anyway pics

Image

Next gotta do the other 2 wheels which are in worse condition :(

Should have done them in a saturn finish or Matt finish. Still looks great though.

Have they started building and houses in that court yet??

They are satin black mate maybe because they are still fresh they look too shiny? Not sure i was worried matt would be too dark.

Still no sign of construction in that court i wonder why and what the prob lem is been like that for yrs now

Yer it makes no sense to me i mean the rd and paths lights etc crossovers have all been done i assume services are there? It always used to be fenced off now it isnt even fenced off like the developer or whoever has just given up! Its strange its not a bad spot have a great view up there if you built a house. I say we find out and invest!!! :)

Well nothing new with the ute really.. have my lowering blocks to put in and still need to paint 2 of the rims... but not enough time and effort in the day.

But with the calais i threw some black FR19s on looks pretty decent might have to get mine powdercoated black one day.

Image

Image

I now know the limits of the rear... 275s no fit... but looked kinda cool, prefer to stick with the low height and 245s though.

Enjoy :drinks2:

Cheers Wilson!!!

Yer one day when ive run out of things to blow money on i might get em done in black it does look cool!!

Yer the 275s just dont fit with my ride height id have to get the guards pumped. Plus the wider 9.5" wheels have less dish to accomodate the extra width.

If only i could get dual exhaust and a metal drop tank... but alas ive looked into both and no go lol

How hard are the 275s rubbing on yours? Are they John's rims? I'll have to ask him the offset on those.

IIRC, CSV used to do a dual exhaust setup with a modified bar to suit. VERY tight for clearance though you'd think.

Cheers Justin. :D

Yer the 275s with that height are rubbing hard like even just rolling at a few kms/h haha one of the tyres got sliced hard by that guard. He will have to put some undersized tyres me thinks maybe 255s so they stretch in a bit. Yea mate pm John they are a fairly different offset to mine even the centres are different thicknesses.

Ahhh csv good tuner shame he moved back to Mildura!! Yer those setups look a little gay when you look under the car. I had this whiz bang idea because VZ Monaros get twin exhaust that id get a monaro petrol tank and itd be all sweet buuut turned out the floor pan of the boot was completely different so there went that idea :(

BTW mate im gonna be chasing 3.7 gears, tru trac, and harrop diff cover early next year :) can you get all that stuff in?

Yeah, unfortunately VZ Monaro is fairly different everywhere. And those CSV twin style setups do look fair gay underneath, and there's SFA clearance to the bar on the RHS, dunno how it'd go longterm.

3.70s (genuine GM and Motive Gear), Truetracs (Harrop AND Eaton) and Harrop diff covers (Sports and Enduro) are all in stock pretty much all the time :D

Fantastic mate mate John mentioned he got it all through you so figured you would have most of it just wasnt sure if you'd have genuine 3.7s. But sounds great ill hit you up in Jan to price it all up etc. Need something better then a 3.07 lsd for easternats next year!!

Re: 04' BA XR6T Ute - Anyone interested in buying this?? CHE

Postby someLS1 » March 28th, 2012, 11:21 am

Im thinking of selling the ute i really cannot afford to keep an xr6t ute and a 5.7ltr v8 now that im completely unemployed!

Not asking a huge lot i got it cheap off a mate and willing to do the same for someone on here... if it hits carsales it will be advertised for more.

Looking at around $11,000 no rwc with REG. Will do a FS thread soon.
