fg xr6 turbo low boost

Postby docheb » March 13th, 2013, 12:59 am

Hi, I have an fg xr6 turbo. Long story short...I put an external wastgate on it...didnt work properly...returned back to stock...car feels sluggish. Im a mechanic by trade, but i cant figure out what I've done wrong. It just doesnt seem to have that surge of torque it use to have. Only mods ive got are hdi intercooler and k&n panel air filter. mods were done before external was fitted. Boost gauge is showing about 7-8psi until it reaches operating temp...then about 10psi...but not all the time. Sometimes it only reaches 7-8psi. Im thinkinh it has something to do with my actuator. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure the actuator flap is sealing, closing all the way?

yeah...when I put the actuator back on, I had to pull the rod to get over the flapper leaver. It was sealing tightly, but if it comes down to it, ill remove my dump pipe to inspect it.

I put new gaskets in when I put it back to stock....no leaks The T3 flange gasket was actually missing when I pulled it apart to mod for external wastegate, but now has one. Im starting to think that im just use to the power...And theres actually nothing wrong with it. I had the external on my car for a good 5-6 months, and even though the boost was fluctuating...it had better mid to top end torque...and now im starting to think that I was expecting the torque to be the same when I changed it back to stock. Thanks for the ideas guys...ill just have to save some penny's to buy a flash tuner.

Hope it works out, i was thinking exhaust leak, blocked cat, even the solenoid on the turbo might be faulty. I'm sure all cooler piping is tightened?

You put an external gate on without a tune?

ford by design to not put a gasket on the manifold/t3 flange just fyi. I thought the same when i took mine off. Still dont have one in between.

Best thing for you to do is put it on a dyno.
