Time for a new car I think...

Postby spope » May 8th, 2008, 11:07 am

Am I mad?
Been looking around, come across these two little gems:
http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/de ... ake=NISSAN
http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/de ... ake=NISSAN

I really like the look of the 4 door R34s. The RB25DET NEO is good for 206kw as well. And I think they are a very good price now.
I just don't really know what to expect by buying a great import. Service parts aren't an issue, Skylines have got better parts support than my damn locally manufactured Pintara. I imagine insurance would be higher, but given I am 27 with a perfect driving record, I can't imagine that it would be that expensive.
Does anyone know of companies in Melbourne that are good with importing these cars? SSV in Oakleigh have a RAWS license to comply them, I am wondering if getting one sourced from Japan might be not a bad idea?
I'd really like to hear of peoples experiences with import cars.

Personally, I wouldn't be buying through a yard. There are enough R34's around (even 4 doors) to buy locally as long as you're patient.

If you do have your heart set on importing, I'd take a look at http://www.j-spec.com.au Have a read on wwww.skylinesaustralia.com There is alot of good feedback about j-spec on there, and there's also a sub-forum for noob importing advice.

Insurance wise, I'm around your age, with a reasonably clean history, and last I was quoted about a year back for an R34, was around $900 comprehensive, which isn't too bad IMO.

Oh, and as for the 2 examples you have looked at, please rethink your sexuality status, and buy a manual.

Dont import, buy one local. Imports are cheap as these days and theres plenty here to pick from. You run the risk of getting a lemon importing, just get one here that you can get inspected before buying. Also the wait, customs, compliance is a headfuck if something goes wrong.

If your getting a 4 door + auto theres no choice - get an aristo! The 2JZ :D shits over the RB25DET in all aspects if your looking at modding it. You wont be stereotyped as a typical skline fan boy and cops wont hassle you half as much. A few basic mods on these and you will already be pushing 250rwkw...

You could also consider a Chaser. More expensive. They have the 1JZ VVT-i engines and come in both manual/auto.

Although if your set on skyline get this - $17.5k

Nope, the EF will be sold if I decide to go ahead. Little way down the line, yet, though, I'm looking into options.

But I am a skyline fanboy. :P More to the point, a Nissan fanboy. But that's half the reason to buy a 4 door over the coupe. Much more subtle styling. The taillights are still out there, but everything else is good. Besides, I won't have a P plate in the window.

After a fair bit of reading on skylinesaustralia, it's pretty clear that buying one that is already here, complianced and roadworthy is the way to go. Lots of risk with importing, and with the very low cost now of the ones I am looking at, I wouldn't save much either.
But it'll probably be a little way off yet.

Dont worry about the p-plates, the cops are attracted to the car! Cops to imports are like bees to honey. In particular 180sx, 200sx and Skyline drivers consistently get owned by the TMU...from my experience anyway.

Once you get your first import you'll understand what i mean ;)
