Well today is a sad day indeed...

Postby ShanXR » December 13th, 2007, 9:45 pm

Today SHANXR gave up the ghost letting a timing chain go and smashing a few rocker arms, valves and no doubt pistons. its quite a mess and no i wasnt doing anything out of the ordinary but unfortunately due to an ear infection i was unable to hear it until it was too late. i suspect the vernier gear has something to do with this but time will tell... anyways my options and your thoughts please.

1) rebuild the ED 4L and get her back on the road - estimated cost 2k+

2) Buy an AU, in particular XR6 low km and put that in - estimated unknown

3) or do i wreck the faimont and put in the 5l with stally etc? - estimated unknown??

If anyone can help guide me, maybe give their thoughts and some pros and cons of each it would be greatly appreciated. im kinda stuck at the moment and ultimately i want reliability at the end of the day. When i finish uni, then it will gain toy status but for the moment reliability and some poke. i just want some peoples thoughts as im kinda shell shocked atm :|

go the au engine, should be able to pick one up for 500-900 , this will be the easiest and most reliable way. If you put 5l in youll have a lot of wiring headaches, then transmission head aches.
Brad Evans, AKA WAGGIN- Your such a coward. I go out of my way to help you out and you cant even return what does not belong to you. Shame Shame Shame!

AU motor FTW!

I'm tipping the auxiliary shaft seized/let go, seems to be quite common these days. Did it bust a hole in the timing cover ?

For The Win, IE AU motor is a good option. I remember seeing your XR6 in Horsham in July last year, I was on the way back from Adelaide after having just bought my XR6. Looked and sounded the goods.

Hey Guys! Well its a been long time but thought i might give an update, ended up getting an AU XR6 motor with 64k on it. Put the complete conversion in with thermos and serpentine setup etc. Been going great since and now sourcing all my turbo parts. Got a log manifold, Rebuilt Airesearch T04 with .60AR, 1.00turbine, wastegate etc

Now just getting other stuff like intercooler, GRA setup.

Just thought id say hi and i hope to be online a lot more lately! Cheers

Good shit Shan! Hopefully you'll be terrorising the Commodore brigade with that AirResearch soon! I spotted a few really nice EA/B/D's on my way through Horsham on the weekend, didn't spot yours though. Makes a nice change to all the doof-doof VL/VN's back when I used to live round there I must say!!!

Hey Jared,

Haha yehh not alots changed... they're still out there but the ol e-series seems to be a popular choice nowadays too :P I'm off my Ps now so i hardly ever cruise as im considered to old to be doing so in Horsham haha

Yehh hopefully be boosting soon but no doubt will run into issues somewhere along the line, Just shopping for the last bits n pieces then waiting for the Tax return for it all to go ahead. Hope to finally catch up one day,

Cheers!

Shan, if you want a hand with the turbo install (if you're doing it in Ballarat), let me know because I pretty much live right around the corner from your place. See your car there a lot.
