BA XR6 Turbo values after Orion?

Postby Sunboost » December 27th, 2007, 8:39 am

Been wondering about this one for a while - how much do you guys reckon the values of BA XR6 Turbos will be affected by the release of the new Orion model in the first quarter of next year?

The values of XR6 Turbos have been dropping steadily but slowly through this last year, but there has been no dramatic drops as yet. I would predict this may happen with the release of the Orion - but by how much?

At current, an unoptioned BTR or T5 equipped XR6T with around 100 clicks on it's odo is worth about $19k tops. One with a few options like premium sound, leather, sunroof and 18's can be had with around the same km (if you look hard enough) for about $23k. Then you've got modified pov packs (no options but basic modifications that increase power to about 250kW - 300kW) that go for about $23-24k as well.

My prediction is that a pov pack will be worth about $17k when the Orion is released, and the optioned ones about $20k. Might drop to about $15k for povs by the end of next year going by the steady drop this year.

Any opinions?

IMO it will depend on how well the orion sells / how good of a car it is.
if a big price drop in BA's occur, ill be outta these boxcars and striagth into a xr6t

I doubt there will be a massive price drop.

Probably more of a steady decline. People will still want them and they're still a good car, the Orion wont change that.

Tho if they do tank it will probably drag F6 prices down too 8-)

Threaten to buy Ash's old KENAZ8 and part it out. Ash sells his XR6T to you for VERY cheap because he doesn't want to see KENAZ8 parted out.

But cereally, I don't see them taking a big hit in resale, look at the AU XRs compared to the Fortes/Futuras/etc when the BA came out. They went down marginally but didn't cop a king-hit like the base models. I'd say your prediction would be spot-on Sunny

I reckon they will sit as they are for a while. XR's and Ghias seem to keep value alot better than the pov spec models. A stocker would be fine if you want to mod it :P

I don't think XR6T's, XR8's and FPV's will change all that much as the Orion will just increase demand, therefore prices. It will just be the base models as they will be defunct with the new 'Orion' models.

I was waiting for this topic to surface. I agree with a steady decline, and although I love my EL, jumping into my Mum's BA Turbo made me want one so much - even just for the (interior) look and feel.

My predictions are going fairly well.

Sundeep wrote:My prediction is that a pov pack will be worth about $17k when the Orion is released, and the optioned ones about $20k. Might drop to about $15k for povs by the end of next year going by the steady drop this year.

It's about $18k for a decent povvo and about $21k for an equipped.. if you look hard enough.

2 more months should see them come down a lot more.

wtf? I think people won't be able to get enough of the G6E Turbo, and fleet sales of XTs will be decent. XR6T & F6 will sell like hotcakes. V8s won't sell too well, except for those who always want whatever's newest out there (ie, VX GTS --> BA GT --> VE GTS --> FG GT... or swap with equivalent SS/XR8)

I'm not the biggest fan of their looks (although the G6E-T is *really* growing on me) but I don't think they'll be anything like the AU, which lagged behind the commodore in everything except refinement, handling, and I6 vs V6 power/torque. LS1 commodores & the looks of the VT-VX killed the AU

Have you been raped by depreciation Ash or has the value not dropped too much?

I dont think the orion will make much of a difference personally. AU's are still holding their value okay. The GF's fairmont isnt much cheaper to buy now that it was 3 years ago.

That's because their values took a beating when BA came out and they went down heaps, but now are going down slower from the initial massive drops. When VX Berlina's were $14-15k AU2 Fairmonts were $10 or $11k. People are more accepting of the AU's value as a good second hand family car now and their styling, and because of this their values aren't shifting all that much.

I thought you were selling a few weeks ago Ash!

I have been watching the prices of these too. Since your original post Sunny you can now have a BA MKII XR6T 6 speed manual for about 23k to 25k with premium sound and extras like that included.

I think by the end of this year up to this time next year they will crack 20k for a MKII.

Hell BI6TIM and I even saw a Typhoon for 35k last night and another Typhoon with 685rwhp by way of a nizpro kit for $50... The value of the new FGs is fantastic for what you get... 45k for FG XR6T or 55k for a G6E Turbo, that's great value.

Sundeep wrote:I'll just keep frashing E-Series for a couple more years.

I think this is what I will end up doing too unless I can work something out with work to get a BA MKII XR6T as my work car. :D

6 speed what? Sounds reasonable if you're after one.

i don't think i'd loose to much on my ute at the moment, had it for a year and they still seem to be going for around 20k cos they hold there money better than sedans (cheaper to buy new aswell). but in another year i can see it being worth about 15k :x

For the last few months I've been backward and forward between boosting my el or buying an xr6 turbo. By time the fg sales have settled and resale prices on previous models have adjusted I am going to have make a decision and it's doing my head in. On one hand I love driving my manual el with cam and extractors and lsd, and I can't help but think how good it would be boosted. On the other hand, it's a 12 year old falcon with sh!t brakes, average suspension, vintage interior, old paint, etc. I'm confident to do a lot of the work myself and would enjoy doing it but the money involved in building an engine, buying engine management and paying for tuning, and upgrading everyting in the above list is going to be huge, even doing the work myself.

On the other hand, an xr6t is a big outlay and I would need a loan; I did a few quick calculations and it looks like I'll be paying back about $450 a month for 5 years If I borrowed $26k. By time I've paid for it, it will have depreciated to a give away price and I'll be back where I started. I wanted to start my own thread on this but I thought this might be a good start. I'm looking for as many pros and cons to compare buying and xr6t or building my own el weapon, and I want to make an educated decision. Arrrrggggghhhhhhh. I'm going nuts over here.

You summed it up well..

Get the XR6T...

26K is about $5k more than you need for a good BA example, premo sound and leather can be had easy. Only options I'd want are the premo sound, leather is cold and ford leather is meh, sunroof's shoot the value up way too much. You could sell your EL too, so there's a bit more off your overdone loan..
